Say goodbye to $11 billion in F-35 parts contracts to Canadian aerospace industry and Canadian jobs. You can bet that contracts for future parts production lots will not go to the Canadians since there is no assurance they will purchase F-35s.

Yawn….nothing more amusing than LM supporters freaking out. A canadian purchase of f18s is reasonably logical and is a MASSIVE favour to both the USN and Boeing.

    We’re expecting a great deal BTW….

    Oh and Ozair….. ?

All of these countries just need to invest heavily in anti ship missiles and LRSAM. A few subs wouldn’t hurt either.

    Here is the solution:

    1.Buy Kilos from vietnam.
    2. Buy Korean F-50s from the Philippines.
    3. Buy S-300s from Ukraine.
    4. SU-30S FROM UKRAINE OR VIETNAM.
    5. I would try to get India to sell me T-50s F-35Bs.
All of these countries would be more than happy to stick a finger in the eye of the Chinese.

The thing that will hinder China in the future will be thier prowess in making enemies.

Saabs, Subs, SAMs, Special Ops, and ASMs. That’d be a sufficient deterrant. Maybe throw in some sleeper cells based on the mainland.

On that note though, will Rafale still be in production in 2022? Maybe it is planned to be…..?

This does raise the question of what the alternatives actually would be by 2022 if you wanted to buy a Western fighter (given that EU manufacturers are jumping the F35 generation of manned fighter and supplementing what they currently operate with unmanned until the future becomes clearer).

Looking out to 2022, as mentioned by someone else, Gripen and F35 are both certain to be available. SH probably not. Rafale likely. Typhoon would require an order from at least one significant buyer to still be viable in that time-frame pending purchases from the existing partners.

Moot point for this thread though because procurement of Canadian jets won’t be put off until 2022, or at least we don’t have any information yet that would indicate that would be the case. All indications are that there will be a decision made by around this time next year. Denmark and Finland will also likely be in around the same time horizon. All countries are aware of the production cliff for SH and Typhoon.

Well that formally announces that the SH has no chance. Eurofighter is almost certainly out as well given I can’t seen them maintaining production until 2022. It becomes a three horse race between F-35, Gripen NG and Rafale and on cost grounds a 2022 production decision is pretty much the lowest price point for F-35…

Nope. Read the article before jumping to F35 conclusions.

As expected procurement moved to post 2022. they are even slow than India.

I think you misread that. They are taking money that would have been allocated to procurement this year and moving it back to 2022, not delaying procurement until 2022. 205 million from this budget as part of a plan to reallocate 3.7 billion. Specifically, you can bet those funds are mostly associated with ship-building, or the likely overlap in those years of large procurement projects.

It’s a smart move. Otherwise DND would lose those funds.

Why do you say the Rafale is best & yet rank it as the worst choice for Canada eh?

    Nic

1.) Going it alone for ongoing weapons integration
2.) Size and disbursement of the international customer base (1 NATO partner)
3.) Development potential of the airframe and engines
    4.) Strongest capabilities are air/ground
5.) More expensive than the SH and Gripen to buy and operate and possibly more than the F35 to buy

It is my favourite of the 5 contenders and I think it’s the best multi-role aircraft out there right now, but a tough choice for Canada.

I have this feeling that someday we are going to see the JSF in Canadian colours (that or the SH)…

    Current rankings of likelihood

    Super Hornet – 40%
    F35 – 25%
    Typhoon 25%
    Gripen 10%
    Rafale <1%

F-35-ists will be offended by those numbers, but that’s as high a chance as I would give it right now.

Which platform I personally prefer for Canada (taking into considerations all factors)
    Typhoon
    Gripen
    F35
    Super Hornet
    Rafale

Best Plane Right Now (In my opinion)

    Rafale
    ———
    Typhoon
    F35
    Gripen E

    ———
    Super Hornet

What’s the point? Aboriginal/First Nation should pay for the F35 if that’s what they want? How is the above related?

So which is more relevant? The build up to the Liberals first budget which includes defense spending or a discussion about the merits of roadbasing for F35Bs?

depends who you ask.. for F-35 crowd, the F-35 is the ultimate solution for everything and everyone

The point I was trying to make was not that the F35A was not suitable but that the F35B never was, and never will be, considered in Canada. Again…not sure why people are discussing that one.

The F35B is not even a remote possibility for Canada. Why even discuss it?
