    RE: MyTravel Airways

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-12-01 AT 08:53 AM (GMT)]I will tell you now why I would never entertain Airtours.
A while ago, they sacked a pilot – a female pilot. The male pilots at the airline put her through hell, would not let her touch the controls of the aircraft and one pilot even told her to get in the back and make his drinks!! Then, when the pilot was making the welcome aboard announcement he said “yes, the co-pilot is a woman, we even have them on the flight deck now but don’t blame me.”
This story is not a rumour or some feminist rubbish or propaganda, it is true. It was in the UK newspapers and there was even a TV programme about the female pilot. I would not ever knowingly patronise any airline which had such a sexist, narrow minded policy.
Anyone who thinks this behaviour is acceptable should go away and have a quiet word with himself and crawl back into the dark ages. There have always been female pilots, the aircraft factories relied upon them in the second world war to fly the aircraft to the squadrons (the Air Transport Auxilary they were called). Then there was Amy Johnson, Jean Batten, Amelia Earhart, Sheila Scott. Women are just as capable as men of flying an aircraft, that is a FACT.
Sorry for that outburst, I always tried to keep feminist type stuff off here, but I needed to make myself clear on my views on Airtours. Having been a victim of sex discrimination myself, I can assure you it is insulting, belittling and downright offensive to be told you cannot do, or understand something technical, just because you are female.

I hope someone Belgian starts up America flights sometime in the near future – either VLM or DAT would be fine. Would hate to be roped into flying long haul with Air France.
    Fly with proper Belgian airlines.:-)

I find everything to do with Airtours dreadful and I would never fly with them as a matter of principle. The best would have been for them to go bankrupt – the wrong airline went to the wall back in November!!!

Would you like to go on the Sabena staff forum and tell all those people who have just lost their jobs “good riddance” to Sabena????
Have you ever even FLOWN with Sabena??? Along with Geforce I am the most pro-Sabena person on this forum. If you want a BAD airline experience, try Air New Zealand.

Couldn’t agree more about Belgian beer, bought about twenty bottles of the stuff the other week, all different types. There are only two types I won’t touch!!

    RE: Avro Shutdown!

I agree Kabir – the Avro RJ was a wonderful aircraft to fly short haul on, I flew on a Sabena one once and it was a great flight. I only hope that the British airliner industry will one day recover from these setbacks and that this closure will only be temporary. This will spell the end for the Avro RJX which, I think, was still in development. I think that the Airbus wings division is still unaffected though?

    RE: Airline food

My worst in-flight “food” experience has to be with Air New Zealand. On various ANZ flights I have been served, for the “main meal” – “chicken” which was so tough I could not pierce it with my fork, let alone cut it; “fish” in some nameless, tasteless sauce; “lamb curry” with lamb so hard you could play a tune on it. ANZ are truly inept when it comes to in-flight food. I told them I had a food allergy when I booked my flight, they even telephoned me to confirm my special meal request, and then on the plane I was presented with the very thing I had told them I could not eat!!!!
My best in-flight food has to be with Sabena (no bias…honest!) The sandwiches they have served on their short flights all seemed really freshly made, I had a delightful tuna one back in September, then they offered me a Twix bar. On my return Sabena flight I didn’t have the sandwich but I was offered another chocolate biscuit and also they handed out free Belgian chocolate. In the summer they also used to do ice cream on Sabena and they were the only airline to serve Maes (a Belgian lager beer which is hard to get in the UK). I shall miss that airline.

This was a terrible incident, my sympathy goes out to the families of the passengers and crew members and I wish all those injured a speedy recovery.

    RE: DAT Flies

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-11-01 AT 01:15 PM (GMT)]Hi Geforce!!The DAT flights to LHR have stopped over the weekend, it is now code-shared with Virgin Express, which is a big shame, it would have been great to see DAT flying in on their own, with their own planes and getting all the money from it. Are DAT still just using Avro RJs/BAe 146 or have they used some of SABENA’s old Airbuses and things? I think the capacity of the Avros and 146s is too small to rely on totally.
Glad to hear that DAT are taking Virgin’s profits, and I think Citybird could have been rescued if Thomas Cook could have put forward a decent plan for them (the first thing would have been a repaint from that strange – but unusual – green livery) Saw one taxying round at BRU in September, first and last one I saw of theirs, wish I’d have got it on video like the SN A340 (super, super plane it suited that dark blue livery perfectly).
Good to hear that those dreadful cheap airlines don’t have much clout in Belgium – some UK airports (Liverpool, Luton and Stansted) are full of them. They are so hideously cheap they must be cutting back on something somewhere (fuel for one is expensive, then slots, maintenance, wages etc) I wouldn’t have any faith in them.

Oh no, not Easy Jet!!! I cannot even stand to think about them. They operate out of the most second rate airports in the UK and they were the subject of the worst “fly on the wall” documentary I’ve ever seen in my life – enough to put you off flying with them, certainly. Is DAT’s code going to stay at QG? We have flights listed in the UK as both QG and SN. Personally, I prefer SN.:-)

    RE: Ryanair going transatlantic?

I think it is a horrid idea. I thought the idea of these dreadful “no frills” airlines was to provide no service and cram as many people into as small a space as possible. If they started flying trans Atlantic, you would get a huge increase in DVT cases, and probably an increase in severely dehydrated passengers. Never mind, if you want severe dehydration for the full cost of an airline ticket you can always fly with Air New Zealand – their lack of on-board service is legendary.

DAT are back in MAN as from today. Their 9am landing was 50 minutes early. Flights from BRU did well over the weekend, nearly all were about half an hour early. This is great for everyone in the north of England who used to fly with SABENA.:-)
