RE: Best airline
My favourites are (in no particular order) Air France for their polite, friendly cabin crew. Finnair for their polite crews and comfortable aircraft (pity the MD82s will soon be replaced) and SABENA – simply incomparable with their ace cabin crews, Belgian beer and the fact that they are based in Belgium.
RE: Is this the end, my only friend, the end???
I will be DEVASTATED if my beloved SABENA go under (not least because I am due to fly with them in September). I will not fly to Belgium with any other airline, or indeed use the ferry or Eurostar. In my experience this wonderful airline is incomparable, and I hope they are not taken over by BA or KLM. I cannot think why so many people criticise them, I have flown on far worse (Icelandair and Air New Zealand to name two). At least their cabin crew are human and down to earth.
RE: National Airlines…….BA,AF etc…. What do u think
I flew with Air France last week and I think they were excellent. There was no great problem with language, the only thing was that they served exactly the same type of sandwich (cheese or ham) going and coming back. The crew were better mannered than some (notably Air New Zealand) and the legroom provided was ample. I flew out on an older A320 and back on a newer A320.
My other favourites are SABENA – simply incomparable in the entertainment stakes with the pilot’s weirdly translated English and the stewards making jokes during the safety routine.
I also love Finnair and have flown with Iberia and Cyprus Airways – both of whom were acceptable.
Ones to avoid are Icelandair and Air New Zealand.
RE: Charles De Gaulle
I was interested to read your comments on CDG. I shall be going there next week (twice – arriving and departing) and I wondered the same thing as Kabir. My terminal is the Air France terminal, which is Terminal 2F. I hoped to get some photos and video, providing the weather is good.
RE: Sabena
I agree about the strange meal service on SABENA’s Avro RJs. I flew on one last year from Manchester to Brussels. It was a lunchtime flight, and lunch consisted of…yes, a pack of three sandwiches (not bad ones, but not really an ideal lunch). On our return flight, this time on a 737-500 we were flying at tea time and had, you guessed it, a sandwich!! While their meal service may be a little strange, the airline more than makes up for it with their superb crew (our cabin crew really were great and did all they could to make the flight as fun and enjoyable as possible, even though we had been delayed).
RE: Colour Schemes
I think SABENA’s scheme – navy blue on the tail and engine pods – is very smart. I liked the old British Airways colours before all those horrid World Tails or whatever they were called. Also I quite like United, another smart scheme.
RE: Just wondering
Thanks for your friendly comments Jet Lag and Kabir. I have to say that the vast majority of people I’ve come across in aviation – at museums, in enthusiasts shops and the regular “spotters” at Heathrow have always treated me well, though I’ve read that some other female aviation fans haven’t been so lucky as I have. I don’t really like to give my age away, but I’m too young to remember the first flight of Concorde! To give you some idea though I’m older than 21 and younger than 35, and that is all I’m saying!!! I’m now looking forward to going on holiday in June – Manchester to Paris CDG, hopefully on an Airbus (if so, it will be my first flight in any Airbus aircraft!) and my first flight with Air France, but first I have to sit two exams towards my degree!
RE: Just wondering
I was interested to read your query on whether there are any females on this forum. I can answer that question for you. There has been a female contributor on this forum for months – ME!!!
I am extremely interested in aviation – I used to help my Grandfather make model aircraft – he had served in the RAF, and I was a regular at the old Finningley air show. I used to love visiting Heathrow, and whenever I am in London I take the camcorder along to see what I can get any decent shots of (only landing so far, I want to get some good take off footage). I have flown on many different aircraft types, visited museums etc. My major interest is de Havilland, hence my sign in name.
RE: Shortest and longest flights
I’ve been on long haul flights – I had one of those multi-stopover holidays to Australia and New Zealand, and the severe misfortune of flying with Air New Zealand!!! They really are the worst airline I’ve ever flown with – the cabin attendants are rude, offensive, the meals are not fit to eat and pray that you don’t need to request a special diet like I did because they are totally incapable of getting meal requests right. I always thought that you should drink plenty of juice and water whilst flying, but Air New Zealand obviously do not agree because if you can find a cabin attendant who is prepared to serve drinks then you are lucky. Don’t waste your time with a window seat, they do all they can to prevent you looking through the window, even on afternoon flights like the one I was on. All window blinds had to be pulled fully down or else!! Also if you actually manage tpo get off on your holiday without hitch you would be really lucky – it is not unknown for the reservations staff to casually cancel all your reservations without your prior knowledge – this happened to me, luckily I always make a point of reconfirming my flight reservations, but I could just as easily have lost a damned expensive holiday due to the sheer negligence and incompetence of Air New Zealand!!!!!!
PS I really hope that someone who works for Air New Zealand will read this, but I doubt it!!
RE: Killer Quake strikes
My sympathies to all the victims and their families who have suffered in this terrible tragedy. I see reports every day on the news and I cannot begin to imagine what it must be like for those poor people. Our thoughts are with you all.
RE: Poll for club
I think Keltic or V1, I hope I don’t offend anyone else whose name I haven’t mentioned.
By the way Kabir, I know exactly how you feel with your student workload, I’m a student too and sometimes there aren’t just enough hours in the day!!
I would like to know more about the club, as I haven’t been able to log in for some time and I feel I might have missed something!
RE: Ugliest Aircraft?
What about the Avro RJ? Looks like a half drowned insect!!
RE: Would you…….?
No.
RE: aeroplane smell
Fokker F27s stink of oil before take off. I found that the 767 (not my favourite aircraft) stinks as well.. Sometimes I notice a smell in the cabin when a 747 is taxying for take off, but I haven’t been on one for a couple of years, so they might have improved now (this was Air New Zealand as well!!)
RE: Captain’s seat
I once sat in the jump seat on an Air New Zealand 747-400, it was much better than the economy pile I had been alocated to sit in for 10 1/2 hours!!
