RE: lax
I have flown into, and out of, LAX with Air New Zealand, and I love it. The viewing is excellent and the restaurants in Tom Bradley are better than those in Terminal 2.
RE: worst ever flight
A flight on an Icelandair 737-400 with faulty engines.
Most flights on Air New Zealand.
A flight on an Air New Zealand 767-300, there must have been about 300 cigarette ends stuffed down the side of my seat when I sat down. The seat cover dropped off the seat in front, exposing the bare wood. The plane had not been touched by cleaners before it went into service again, it just landed from one flight and filled up straight away for the next one.
RE: your favorite airplane
I will give a proper answer to the question you asked.
I like ALL the aircraft types I’ve flown in, I couldn’t really give a favourite
The 747-400 is high on my list, I had the opportunity to visit the flight deck on one of these aircraft, one of my best in-flight memories.
The 727 is another one I have a soft spot for, I had many enjoyable trips to Iceland on this aircraft.
The Fokker F27 on account that the ones I went in flew relatively low and had large windows for excellent viewing and air-to-ground photography opportunities.
The Avro RJ, an ugly little devil, but I had a great flight in one of these with Sabena, one of the most entertaining flights I have ever been on.
RE: Do you think travllers really care who they travel with ?
I care who I travel with. After the vile experience of spending 1 1/2 hours in an Icelandair jet with a faulty engine, I would rather miss out on going to Iceland than fly with them again.
Also after flying with Air New Zealand and receiving no in-flight service at all because the crew were more concerned about heading to the rest area, I can honestly say I will find another way to travel to LA, even if it means going via Canada, than be ripped off by Air NZ again.
RE: VC10
The VC10 was GORGEOUS!
RE: a project
What about BA’s ongoing on/off merger talks with various airlines? That keeps cropping up every so often and they never get further than the “evolution” stage!
RE: Airline Tail Designs
Finnair have ruined their livery recently. I have to go with “my” airline – I quite like the design of Sabena.
RE: Two or three class
If I were flying business class on a European flight, then I would not pay the prices of Finnair or Sabena (much as I love these two airlines). The reason is that, certainly on Sabena European flights, the “business class” is no different to economy, just more expensive! The seats throughout the whole aircraft are the same, all that changes is the position of the dividing curtain between the “two classes”.
Finnair USED to have a similar policy. On one MD-82 flight I was allocated a seat in row 10 flying between London and Helsinki. I thought this was a rather good seat, as I would rather not sit too near the back. However, on the return flight, also operated by MD-82, I requested a seat in row 10 once again, only to be told I probably wouldn’t get that seat as the airline had not yet decided where to put the dividing curtain for business class. It turned out my favoured seat was located in business class that day, so some poor suckers had paid twice the price to sit in a seat that only a week before I had occupied for the cost of a cut-price economy ticket!!
RE: Alliances
Typical of Air New Zealand to bump up prices 37%, I gather they still have to same awful “service” as they did when I flew with them. Some things never change, except the prices!!
RE: Frontier tail designs
I think they’re very original. Love them!!
RE: SABENA
To go into more detail about this amazing airline – I genuinely enjoyed their Avro RJ, even if a little cramped. The steward on board went out of his way to welcome everyone, and intended to make everyone’s flight as enjoyable as possible. He was more like a stand-up comedian than a cabin attendant, and even had the stewardess in fits of hysterics as she was about to run through the safety demonstration. He told jokes in five languages and his English was so perfect, he hardly had a trace of a foreign accent.
The pilot on the return leg (this time a 737-500) also had us in hysterics, but for different reasons. We were delayed over an hour due to missing passengers, the ground crew giving a wrong head count and then a missed take off slot (he thought nothing of telling us how angry Brussels Control were with the airline). Then he told us the company were to be “congratulated for their creativity in securing us a take off slot”, an unusual way to put it! The on board food seemed fresher than most in-flight meals I’ve had, even though it was only sandwiches, and the cabin crew were polite and efficient.
As for the colours, I prefer the new livery with the blue tail, I’m not a fan of all white fuselages, I think a touch of blue works wonders.
RE: Favourite & worst looking airliner of all time
Further to my previous selection, I must add the Lockheed TriStar as one of my favourite looking aircraft. a beautifully-shaped nose. Also the 747-400 (FROM THE SIDE), a fantastic airliner, but front-on looks rather like an egg!
RE: Favourite & worst looking airliner of all time
I have to plump for the Comet, followed by the VC-10 and IL-62, gorgeous planes. The daftest looking thing has to be the BAe 146/Avro RJ.
