This (so far) has been the only Spit ive ever sat in, many years ago in the back of the hangar at Wittering, and i wasnt really suprised that with ny arms folded I only had about an inch of free space either side of my elbows! Glad to see its still in good condition. I knew a new Phoon Sqn was on the cards, with the sheer number of frames currently with the Canopeners (seemingly 24 were reported not that long ago). 1 Sqn was suggested amongst others, esp 43 or 111 because of their long association with the base but hadnt seen any confirmation that No 1 had been chosen, tacit or otherwise until now.

Personally, i’d have loved 74 to be re born – the prospect of a Phoon in Tiger stripes…. sigh… sorry but I didnt consider the Hawk to be ‘Tiger’ material.

Still I have no doubt that a corner of a hangar will be clean and waiting on her arrival, and anyone daft enough to suggest she be sat outside will find themselves on a permanent posting to the Falklands counting penguins.

I have yet to find ANYONE who openly admits voting for this shower. Personally i blame the students falling into the mantrap of believing pre election promises. But, youngsters, you can tell them till you’re blue in the face, but they wont listen, always know best, and think its us old wrinklies that know nowt… 😡

we had 12 or so years of ministers consistantly ignoring the CDS probably because their university grad numbnut special advisor (see above) was reliably informed by the Commons barman over a spliff that the military always make things out to be worse than they are.

I dont like the Cameroon Highlanders anymore than the next chap. I accept savings have to be made, but NOT like this, and the sheer fallacy of trying to drive through cuts of this size and depth in one Parliament has well and truly been exposed as lunacy, as I and many others have been banging on about ad nauseum. This whole thing really does read like a Yes Minister script! Anyway – enough.

Meanwhile, back on the thread – yes very nice pics. Sadly I want able to get back to Leeming on the Monday to see them come in, and these shots reminds me of an F3 I saw coming up Bassenthwaite Lake several years ago, at about 100ft 🙂 They might not have been super dopoer, but they have served us well and when needed, performed. I amongst many others will miss them. The F3 had (just about) reached its natural end, unlike others.

Will the F3 also turn out to be the RAFs last PURE interceptor?

I would second Sky Highs comments: no amount of shaking will resolve the issue if the money is actually non existant.

From previous knowledge, part of the problem was the unforseen costs and the unexpected edict from the CAA that all staff working on 558 must be paid the going rate for trade skilled employees and not volunteers. I guess this is still making a big pull on their meagre income, and if I were in Roberts’ shoes, i’d be lobbying the CAA to relax that restriction, if indeed it still applies.

Naturally, the CAA will argue against this as a safety aspect, so theyre going to have to put together a convincing argument.

I am sure that there are still loads of ex-Vulcan air and ground crew who would love to get involved with helping keep 558 airborne.

Maybe one of those in the know could give us an upto date steer on that.

yep she was, and she was good to see – and hear. shame she wasnt able to preposition and take off – thats almost the best bit, but personally, I feel that the display, spirited and good as always missed that vital spark !!

Certainly on the Saturday, as soon as the announcer mentioned the V word, just about everyone stood up and was craning necks left and right trying to catch the first glimpse – including the people that were in front of me in our enclosure who were leaning on the crowd line fence and didnt need to do anything but sit there and soak it up.

Just goes to show, a pretty 50 year old can still turn heads 😉

glad to see her in the air for the first display in season No 2. I was already en route to Waddo on friday afternoon when i got the word about the PTF, which made a promising weekend much much better. 😀

Lets hope that the weather this year follows Saturdays lead and we have a good appearence filled season.

Now I could only remember the serial.

It’s Spitfire F21, LA255. Have a pic taken several years ago on a base tour, whilst at Wittering.

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/phillip.charlton/witterng.html

I’m actually looking for info on a Tempest 5 SN215 that was on the Gate at RAF Middleton St George, now Durham Tees Valley, specifically where it and the Spit that was next to it, serial unk at this time, went.

    >edit

Suprisingly, the aircraft still exists, albeit under another number.

http://www.hawkertempest.se/NV778.htm recounts a series of moves, followed by a major overhaul at which it was discovered that a large percentage of the airframe was from NV778, and so on repainting, that was the number it was given, and it now resides, hanging from the roof, in the RAF Museum at Hendon.

    All,

To quote one of the many reports on this subject that have floated about over recent years:

An unsolicited proposal for reengining 94 aircraft in the B-52 fleet was submitted to the Air Force by Boeing North American, Inc. in June 1996. Boeing proposed modernizing the B-52 fleet by replacing the current TF-33 engines with Allison/Rolls Royce RB-211 engines through a long-term leasing agreement, and providing fixed-cost, privatized maintenance based on the number of hours flown each year.

Boeing initially projected reengining cost savings of about $6 billion, but later revised the projected savings to $4.7 billion. An Air Force team formed to study Boeing’s proposal analyzed the lease and purchase alternatives and concluded that both options are cost prohibitive compared to maintaining the existing TF-33 engines.

The General Accounting Office estimated that Boeing’s unsolicited proposal to reengine the B-52 fleet would cost the Air Force approximately $1.3 billion rather than save approximately $4.7 billion as Boeing projected.

It is accepted that the newer engines would be far more fuel efficient than the old TF33s with the added bonuses of getting longer ranges per fillup, or having to haul less fuel overall or even giving a longer on station loiter time and reducing the amount of mid-mission tanking that would be required.

Heres another piece from a discussion thread of just over three years ago that seems to put doubt on the USAFs counter-argument that the cost savings are minimal. As with all things, theres always two sides to an argument !

By any measure, the venerable B-52 bomber is a gas hog. It burns 3,334 gallons per hour through eight jet engines that were designed in the 1950s, when the B-52 first entered service.

The B-52 remains the Air Force’s main big bomber. The Air Force has rejected proposals over the past decade to replace the plane’s eight engines with four new, efficient jets. The Air Force said spending $4 billion on new engines would save only a net $400 million and then only if the plane kept flying for another 40 years.

The Science Board study said the Air Force incorrectly calculated fuel costs. Each gallon of jet fuel was priced as if the airplanes were filled up by tanker trucks at the B-52s’ main home base. However, about 10% of the fuel is delivered by aerial tanker, which costs about 10 times more than regular fueling.

In addition, many of the planes flying with a full load, such as those in use over Afghanistan, take off from remote bases, such as Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean, where special fuel shipments are required.

The Science Board’s study of replacing the B-52 engines estimated $9 billion in savings, and that was when fuel prices were half their current level.

One benefit would be that regular missions from Diego Garcia to Afghanistan could be done without aerial refueling. Such refueling, which involves a tanker plane extending a fuel line to the B-52 flying below, is often dangerous and exhausting for pilots. It also slows the mission.

I dont claim to know the answer to this question, however, I do know that old stuff costs shedloads more to maintain, and i do find it suprising that the option hasnt been explored further by doing the mod on a couple of a/c and actually trying it!

Lets face it – we’ve all seen what a change the CFM56 has made to the -135 series, i would have thought that that lesson would have been patently obvious.

The re-engined tanker, designated the KC-135R, can offload 50 percent more fuel, is 25 percent cheaper to operate and is 96 percent quieter than the KC-135A.

    XM173 continued

hopping across the hills to Warton this morning we went into Newton in search of 173 and found her fairly quickly, at the location already described, behind the used car lot.

We were told by one of the guys there that the owner doesnt like poeple looking at it!! which sounds a bit odd especially after trumpeting its location in the Aviation press.

Anyway, without any ado, here she is, as of this afternoon. Much the same as in previous shots from last year when she first arrived here.

has anyone got any ideas about the flying times for Waddo?

You know what its like after a couple of tins, just idly speculating as to whether a 150 mile round trip to open the British GP at Silverstone sunday would fit into the display schedule…seeing as the Reds are going already, she might tag along for the ride. I’m sure Bernie would cough up a few grand out of the £170M in his back pocket…

race day is a total sell out, and what better place to hawk for sponsorship – the hub of british engineering innovation.

    😀

    Gents,

as Albert has already mentioned, ‘Sir’ Duke is just the latest to leave us. As the show season is approaching and these guys are quite deservedly Legends in their own right, howabout at the Duxford Legends we hold an impromtu wake during the show and salute the memory of these fine aviators?

I will of course be raising a tinnie or two tonight as my salute to another man who did so much.
