As Rii has already mentioned above, there is too much already invested in the Rafale deal negotiations between HAL, MoD, IAF and Dassault to have a new player enter it at this late stage. Either the entire process is scrapped and started over again, which would mean basically a 3-4 year delay but is theoretically possible (see the LUH tender that was scrapped recently) or the process continues till a deal is signed.

The Modi govt. has shown great interest in defence manufacturing happening in the country, which has even impacted the P-75I submarine tender, with all 6 subs now to be manufactured in India itself instead of importing 2 from the foreign yard. That means that ToT and manufacturing/assembly in India will be considered most important. HAL has wrapped up its part of the negotiations, which is in itself a big thing..and the offset proposal was also accepted, so that was another hurdle crossed. For Airbus to try to wriggle its way into the scheme of things now seems impossible. the IAF for one would oppose it tooth and nail.

Great shot, probably the best angle for Mi-24/35.

totally agree! it looks really menacing in that shot..and I must say I quite like that dark camo on the Russian helis..:D

I’ll be quite sad to see the Mi-24/35 retire from Indian service once the AH-64Es enter service in numbers.

440 Helicopters — now we’re talking! None of this ‘dozen Apaches here, dozen Chinooks there’ crap.

a proper rationalization was required..the IA’s and IAF’s requirements for the light utility helicopter couldn’t have been very different and hopefully now they’ll settle for the indigenous LUH. But the IN will have some specialised requirements which could be met by modifying the LUH with either a foreign major or with the experience gained from navalising the Dhruv (which has now been inducted into the IN in certain roles like SAR and utility).

India looks to acquire 18 ShinMaywa US-2 amphibians

The Indian navy is looking to acquire 18 ShinMaywa US-2i amphibian aircraft, according to informed sources.

“The US-2i will be manufactured by the private sector and final assembly and integration will take place in India,” an official involved in the process says. This strategy will exclude state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics from any licenced production deal.

Deliveries are expected to begin in 2016-2018, depending on when a contract signature is obtained. Current plans call for two examples to be delivered each year, later rising to three. Flightglobal understands that the first US-2i to be assembled in India will roll out within five years of the order being placed.

The entire programme cost is estimated at around $3 billion across a seven-year period, with an offset component worth $900 million. The US-2i is estimated to have a unit cost of $90-115 million, depending on the configuration.
“ShinMaywa is planning to develop capabilities in India to realise exports worth $300 million annually from the country,” says an industry source, with its offset proposals including a plan to set up a post-doctoral centre for excellence in aerostructure design.

In what signals a transformational shift in bilateral relations, a statement released during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Japan said that “both sides have directed the joint working group [JWG] to accelerate progress in the discussions and preparations for a road map for the development of the Indian aircraft industry through US-2 amphibian aircraft co-operation, including the transfer of the aircraft and its technology to India.”
The JWG has seen representations from India’s cabinet committee on security, defence ministry, ministry of external affairs and navy, and extensive discussions have already taken place.

The Indian navy could use the US-2i for a number of roles, such as crew rotation at sea, supply of spares to ships, long-range search and rescue and surveillance. A request for information for an amphibian type was issued in 2010. The Japan maritime self-defence force currently operates seven US-2s, with ShinMaywa seeking its first export sales of the type.

Another big opportunity for private players after the HS-748 replacement program, possible participation in the Light Utility Helis for the IA, IAF and IN and now the US-2 amphib.

Indian Armed Forces have a requirement for 440 light utility helicopters

NEW DELHI: The Indian armed forces have projected a combined requirement of 440 light utility helicopters which will now be manufactured indigenously involving the state-owned HAL and private sector firms in partnership with foreign players. The IAF, Army and the Navy require 440 choppers and these would be now manufactured within India including the HAL, private sector firms and foreign players, Defence Ministry officials said here.
    ..

Looks like the bulk of the LUH requirement will be fulfilled by HAL’s indigenous LUH program..I really really hope that the entire production, sustaining and support of the LUH shifts from HAL to a private player or at the very least, to a JV between HAL and a private player like TASL (which already manufactures the S-92 helicopter cabins), or Mahindra and Mahindra Aerospace or even a smaller player like Taneja Aerospace.

This could be a huge opportunity if the MoD and HAL don’t play spoilsport and try to keep it all to themselves. They already have more than enough on their plates accounting for existing orders for the Dhruv Mk3, Rudra Weaponised ALH and the Light Combat Helicopter.

thanks TR1. Is there any information on what kind of missions were performed? Was it a sort of combined package, with both RuAF and IAF pilots flying together to fulfill mission objectives?

The next part of Exercise Avia Indra is to be held in India this year in November.

Avia Indra-2014 is being held in Voronezh at the Pogonovo range and in the Astrakhan Region at the Ashuluk training range.
The Pogonovo fighting ground near Voronezh hosted one of the main events of the Avia Indra 2014 Russian-Indian exercises on Tuesday, September 2. The joint Russian-Indian crew flew the Mi-35 and Mi-8, as well as the Su-30 CM. Helicopters brought down several thousands of litres of water to the firing ground, practicing fire-fighting, and the fighters hit the ground targets with missiles and bombs.

“The Indian Air Force is not involved in counter-terrorism operations. Their main task is to provide combat support to troops. Therefore, we have chosen operational and tactical aviation exercises at the fighting grounds and practicing of special Army Aviation missions,” said Colonel Alexander Maksimtsev, deputy chief of the Russian Air Force. “This involves interception of air targets, fire-fighting, search and rescue operations and support of ground forces. The Indian Air Force has a lot of experience in the highlands. We are interested to learn about the methods of their work.”

The second phase of the exercises will be held in India in November 2014. “Russia and India have historical Air Force connections,” Indian Air Force Commander Praveen Keshav Vora said. “We are using the Russian equipment from the sixties: MiG-21, MiG-23 and Su of various types. We have similar methods, because our technique is the same. We are carrying out these exercises for the first time and expect that they will serve as the basis for the development of our mutual cooperation. At first glance, this stage went very well, but we will discuss everything in detail when we get back to the base.”

Pilots from mixed crews communicated with each other in English, and using sign language.

“We use a similar technique. Only our spillway devices are Canadian. But there is almost no difference between them. However, the weather here is different, other nuances of piloting, new people,” IAF Commander Nikhil Purandari.

Russian pilots have said that the there is almost no language barrier among the crew members, because the aviators’ language is similar.

The Avia Indra-2014 exercises started on August 29. The first phase will last until September 5. From the Russian side, aviation pilots from the 4th training centre are involved and as well as pilots from the 334th centre for Army Aviation Combat Training. In Voronezh, pilots are trained using the Lipetsk aviation centre technology.

TATA Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) secures contract to build the PC-12 utility aircraft airframes as part of the offset obligations from Pilatus for the PC-7 MkII deal for the IAF
