RE: Here’s a bit of Inspiration for you!
Isn’t the tailwheel construction looking a bit strange, or is there something standing in front of it ?
RE: Doesn’t Upset Me
I agree with you that it is a part of the modern history. Scrapping the aircraft, according to me, can not be justified, . I think that you are right that other preservation groups/musea or others, should have liked to include it in their collection. Scrapping it was a waste. At least the cockpit survives, but, when I look to the photo, it must be severely damaged by the machine that was used to demolish the aircraft.
RE: B26 query
I remenbered that I had somewhere a 1/48 scale model (Monogram) of B26 “Flakbait”. It took me some time to find but the model, which is extremely detailed, has only ONE bombbay, te be closed by a pair of double folding bombdoors. Just behind this bombbay is another, much smaller, set of doors. In these doors are windows where 2 additional gunposts can be installed. However, these two doors are (at least not in the large scale model)not connected to the bombbay. When I looked to a slide I took of the “Le Bourget” Marauder, it is clearly visible that only the large bombdoors are opened over the entire length of the bombbay. Maybe the smaller doors are some doors to (re) move the upper turret, as these is exactly positioned over it.
RE: Dutch make B-24 Liberator
Some new and additional information about the aircraft. The movie is called “Resistance”, and is about the B24 “Carpetbagger” operations as flown by the 801 / 492 Bombardment Group, based in the UK during WW2. It shows the history of a B24D crew shot down over occupied territory, somewhere in 1943. The B24D has been moved to Belgium for filming. Next week, when the fiming is over, it will be scrapped on site if nobody is interested to preserve it. In Holland, some museum(s) are now trying to obtain the aircraft. The movie will be released in sept/okt of this year, and will be shown worldwide. The aircraft, called “Achilles” is 100% looking like an original B-24D
RE: Anyone been to Toulouse Blagnac?
I visited TB some 8 years ago, in the winter. Views from the terminal, after passing douane and sec. check wasn’t bad, although photography wasn’t very good due to the glass(but there was nothing to shoot anyway). The Airbus factory was visible at the other side, but far away. Most interesting I saw that day was a preserved Concorde and , a Brequet Sahara (a double deck propliner from the fifties, and a C-47 and desert camouflaged Noratlas. The tarmac in front of the terminal was completely empty, except from the Transavia 737 I had to board, for almost 2 hours. It was boring and the terminal was rather small and old, but, so is this report. Things can be different now. Oh, don’t forget, they didn’t like camera’s overthere!!!!
RE: Dutch make B-24 Liberator
I only know it will not be shown in Europe, unless a VHS or DVD is bought. About Australia, who knows? . It isn’t a war movie either, just a movie that takes place during WW2. Of the story I only know that one of the crewmembers is hidding out during the last months of the war, and that, as thanks for the people that gave him shelter, he get the daughter pregnant. But tomorrow I am going to Belgium to shoot some rolls, so tomorrow night I might tell more.
RE: Dutch make B-24 Liberator
The name is “Resistance”, and it is American (movie) market only, in Europe it will be released on video. It is made by “First Floor productions”.
RE: Dutch make B-24 Liberator
Yes, I have pictures of it( I’ll think they will be in the next issue of Flypast), but I have no (fast) way of sending it to the forum as I have no scanner available untill monday. It is made of wood, metal and plastic. Original instruments, e.g. in the radio compartment, have been installed. It is unbelievable good looking! I am going to Belgium this Sunday, as it is there where they are shooting the movie in the next week, after that it will be scrapped. It is transported to a Belgium hillside, where they have laid the aircraft as if it had to belly land. It must be a spectacular sight. It realy should make a fantastic museum object!
RE: Constellation to be scrapped
The aircraft was scrapped on january the 11th. However, parts were donated/used to keep the 3 Connies at Avra Valley, The “MATS”, the “Swiss” and the “Dutch” in the air. The Dutch Connie is now hoped to arrive in Europe somewhere in May or June!
RE: Underwater Wellington
If it is there, raise it while it is (still) possible
RE: “Long nose ” FW-190 coming
There is no ban in Germany on German warbirds. It is only not allowed to paint a swastuika on the tail.
RE: “Long nose ” FW-190 coming
I was told that they wanted a flying 190 at the Berlin ILA, so if this is true, there must be a flying example around in the second week of May.
RE: “Long nose ” FW-190 coming
I have no clue about the price, but it must be around 1.000.000 USD.
RE: DC4
Following the conversation at the forum this evening, I was phoned and told that the DDA Skymaster PH-DDS will go to South Africa. It will be leased to them. maybe, I think that it will be back in Europe under South African registration. If so, the Dutch CAA might be “bypassed” by this “trick”. Let’s hope so. This means that the “hulk” will remain at AMS and, hopefully will find a place in a museum.
RE: B25
According to the French aviation mag le “Fana” the aircraft has been sold for 375.000 USD. Most probably, it will go to the USA
