Great pics, especially the Wizzair 320! They really stand out for drivers on the M1 when they’re on finals 🙂
All great photos – the L1011 was a truly special aircraft
agree: great report and superb pictures!
How on earth can Whizz fill planes like 737/320s on a regular basis on a route such as LPL-Katowice? LHR-Katowice would be difficult enough. Who is this Whizz? Are they no seat no/no drink/no hot meal/15KG baggage airlines? Do hope not!
For a UK airline, this would be difficult. But hopefully Wizz should be able to generate enough demand in Poland to sustain flights to LPL (e.g. as a city break destination).
Are there any direct links with these destinations (particularly Budapest) from the north of England or even Scotland? I didn’t think there were.
Malev used to fly MAN-BUD a couple of years ago with their Fokkers but the route is currently suspended.
Enjoyable reading – great attention to detail!!
Interesting report and excellent photos
One of my favourite planes, what’s that livery though on the Air Atlanta bird… Hawaiian ?
Yes it is, though I believe the CC a/c operated for Air Ops on their arrival in Europe
Isnt a twice daily service really more convienent……the normal holiday maker in most cases isnt going to care about the type of aircraft being used…just the more choice in departure times?
For business travellers 2 or more daily services is really convenient. MAN already has this albeit with different airlines.
wizzair have been flying for a little while now ?
Since 19 May according to Wizzair.com
Superb pics, especially the inflight ones!
They also used to serve Manchester, as recently as 1998, but were replaced by AOM DC10s.
Happy days. 😀
I remember seeing CU at MAN, though from memory they always seemed to be very delayed 🙂
Ghana Airways was apparently barred from flying to the USA recently for failing to renew its licence and flying aircraft which had been banned from US airports by the FAA.
Great shots! I can remember seeing Peach, CC and ATA regularly at MAN as a young teenager. Didn’t that CC L1011 also operate for Air Ops at some point? (there’s another Air Ops L1011 in the background, to the left of the HY IL62).
I don’t think so. They definately have none of their widebodies in storage.
Don’t think CO have a large number of widebodies in their fleet. Mostly seems to be comprised of 757s and 737s.
I’m not interested in your clan warfare 😉 – I’m just pointing out that the catchment areas for the two services are very close and must inevitably overlap at some point. And they are.
I guess the same is partly true of the MAN and BHX services to some extent though. The fact that the MAN service went from a 757 initially to an assortment of larger widebodied types (DC10, 777, 764) hasn’t impeded growth at BHX. I don’t think it’s uncommon for passengers from the Midlands and even the South West to travel up to MAN to take an intercontinental flight.
Many Midlanders aren’t even aware of the number of services available at BHX. Recently, I overheard some Brummies discussing flying to Australia – one said to the other “You’d have to travel to London or Manchester to get a flight to somewhere like Australia.” Obviously, Emirates should be doing a bit more advertising in that region :p
