Petwood Hotel at Woodhall Spa- not in the centre but unmissable.
104361 COOPER John Charles A/SLdr, DFC London Gazette 7/12/43 p5337, bar to DFC LG 14/11/44 p5205 both awards with 78 Squadron. He’s the only John Cooper I can find DFC & Bar if it helps at all.
The National War Museum in Valletta may be able to help with info. (Or a quick call to the REgimental museum) If he was at Pembroke Barracks, they are near St George’s Bay and are now a large language school/dwellings. All the roads have pulic access so visiting is easy and the student’s cafe has some of the cheapest food on the island. (Not that I used it as I’m not a student………;) )
If you search old threads what to see there has had a lot of coverage in the past. Hope they have a great trip.
I may be a million miles out here but my understanding is that ‘soon’ we may all have to pay tax for parking at work.

If so places such as the RAFM will have to introduce fees otherwise the displacement of drivers trying to avoid the tax will hit them hard. (IE no space for visiors). Perhaps, and I repeat perhaps, they are introducing this fee early both to get some money in and visitors used to the concept.
We are certainly planning for this as a long term issue where I work.
Is there special significance in the fact that he isn’t on the medal rolls? It crosses my mind that maybe he didn’t serve overseas and might therefore not have had a medal? Or are many of these records missing, too?
Maggie
At the risk of oversimplifying WW1 campaign medal entitlements; The War Medal was awarded for overseas service and the Victory Medal for entering a theatre of operations. It was impossible to be awarded the 1914/1914-15 Stars or Territorial War Medal without qualifying for other campaign medals.
If he served in the UK for the whole war he wouldn’t have been entitled to anything.
More detail can be found here: (Moderator it’s a dealer’s site but I’ve only linked to the reference pages hope that’s OK)

I’m no expert on WW1 aviation but I do know that providing he didn’t go on to serve past the mid 1920’s your relative’s service record will be held by the National Archives on open view. This should give you all the detail you are seeking. I THINK you can order a copy electronically from their internet site.
A very quick message to say thanks for the advice and to those who have sent me a PM. I’m rather caught up with work at the moment (it gets in the way of a perfectly good hobby doesnt it 😀 !)
Please bear with me until about Tuesday when I should be back to something like normal and don’t please don’t take my silence as a lack of interest or gratitude.
Well; back to the grindstone…….:(
Hi Lion,
Unlike the British DFC there is no roll for US awards. Their records department are helpful- freedom of information actually means something over there! They my be able to help although their main function is for US records- I’m not sure how foreign awards fit in.
Their details are at:
http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/index.html
All you could want to know about the US DFC can be found at:
No too much in Action Stations I’m afraid- but it is the only incident mentioned that fits.

‘A Very Special Lancaster’ by any chance? I still have a copy!
Yes that’s the one- fantastic booklet; ‘wouldn’t sell’ nowadays I suppose so keep it dumbed down.
I also recall buying a very good booklet about ‘Sugar’- listing missions crews etc.
Thank you Walter
This really is a shame. I’m a big fan of Hendon- even had a behind the scenes tour acouple of years ago. I know things are tight and the ‘no admission fee rule’ doesn’t help I’m sure. But contrast this debacle with Cosford- no contest.
Am I reading correctly B-108?
