Hi,
Pre-War RAF squadrons were split into 2-3 flights. Initially it was 2 then 3 then back to 2. Each flight was distinguished by a colour, which was red, blue or yellow. I’m not 100% sure which colour was which flight.
The aircraft within each flight had the wheel covers and usually the spinner painted in the flight colours.
So basically any of the squadrons that operated the Grebe would have had red spinners.

Hi,
Not too hot on what the Syrians operated but the one at the top could be an IL-28 Beagle. The one in the middle with the swept back wings looks could possibly be a Mig-19.
These are only guesses and probably way off the mark.

Great photos. Love the shots of the Fury, especially the ‘office’.
bexWH773,
The Latvians also used the Swastika, but it was red and sat on one leg.

Hi Bruce,
Much appreciated.
Tsetse book has now been scheduled for mid-2007. First draft from publishers hopefully around Easter.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for that. I’ll try and get in touch with Philip through the museum.

Hi,
Does anyone have a copy of the photo that shows a Mossie with all the various types of weapons it could carry layed out in front of it? I’d really like a copy of it for my Tsetse book.
Alex
Hi Papa Lima,
Many thanks for your reply, very useful indeed.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the info. I’ll try and get a hold of your book. The picture I saw with the black/white checks was on E-bay but I was outbid. I have 1-2 photos with just the black checks but would like to get 1-2 with the full markings for my book on the Fury/Nimrod.

Hi,
From my list of RAF and Commonwealth POW’s I have a J R Nicholson service number 620766 being held in Stalag Luft 6, near Hydekrug, POW number 13040. The only problem is he is down as a Warrant Officer.
Alan, could you confirm the rank of J R Nicholson. Mantog says he was a navigator, which doesn’t sound right for a LAC, whereas it would fit for a Wt Off.

France also used a number of Halifaxes in North Africa post war. They even flew supply missions to Madagascar and possibly Vietnam of all places. So maybe there’s one or two remains in the ex-French Colonies.

Hi,
Anyone looked at the Venturas? They have two machine guns in the nose and another two slightly higher up. I noticed this on several of the aircraft. Was this a squadron modification or was it common in most Venturas. Can’t remember the image numbers.
Alex
Superb set of photos. Have you looked at the rest? 601 Sqn Airacobras start from about image 100. More Whirlwinds, this time from 137 Sqn are from 249-265. A fine set of Hawker Furys (biplanes) from 1-14. Great stuff indeed.
Alex
Dunno. What German stuff do they have at Hendon? Ju87?? That would be nice to see.
Hi,
Couldn’t go to airshow today as I’m off on holiday next weekend and saving my pennies. Going to Shuttleworth display next Sunday.
Did see the Blades pass over house this morning as well as the P51 and BBMF flight.
Alex
Hi Coanda,
Yes you can and so can anyone else 🙂
Drop me an email and I’ll let you have the details.
