Hi,
I would have thought that the Russian Antonov AN-2 biplane was the last to be used operationally. Aren’t they still used by some countries?
Valentia biplanes were still being used as transports in the desert in 1940. Gladiators were the last operational biplane fighters of the RAF, although the South Africa Air Force used Hawker Fury biplanes until 1941 before they were relegated to training duties up until 1943.
Italy had the Cr42. I believe a night fighter version was till in use by 1943.

Hi,
Didn’t they modify a number of B17’s with loads of extra guns to act as escorts to the main bomber force? Maybe the photo is one of them.

Hi,
The original King Kong was on last night (in the UK anyhow). Real aircraft were used for take off shots and some formation flying.
I think the best flying sequences are in BoB, although 633 Sqn has some good shots as well.
Pearl Harbour had some nice shots of the P40’s pulling vapour trails in the clouds.

With aircraft from the BA Collection moving up to East Fortune where will they put them all? Will other aircraft be ejected from the Museum to make room?
I think we have to watch what happens at the Museum very closely.

Hi,
Excellent thread and some great photos. It’s nice to see that the Javelin is remembered by those that saw it and that it brings back fond memories.
I am actually gathering material for a book on the Javelin so if anyone can help with stories/anecdotes/photos I would be very grateful. I think the Javelin is one of those classic British aircraft that is well remembered but there is very little written about it. I hope to put that right.
Regards,
Alex
Hi Avinoam549,
I found the article. If you PM me your postal address I will send you a copy.

Hi Vultee,
Thanks for posting. I like the Shack photo, very atmospheric.
I remember going to RAF Leuchars many years ago when they used to operate the Phantoms. Don’t know if this is true or not, but we were told that the Russians knew when the airshow was on and sent over a couple of Bears to interupt the show. Every year the show was stopped and we had the pleasure to see the QRA Phantoms scrambling in the middle of the show to intercept them. Then the show continued as if nothing had happened. A couple of hours later the Phantoms would return.
I can also vaguely remember the Lightning doing a low and fast flyby. I think they were going at .8-.9mach. They were gone before you heard them.
Those were the days.

Hi,
I think I have an early copy of Born in Battle that has an article of the Israeli Mosquitos. I’ll have a dig for it.

Hi,
Sorry I can’t add very much to this discussion but most of my 263 Squadron files are in a box somewhere in the attic. I haven’t done much research into the squadron for well over a year, except for their actions over Norway in 1940.

Hi,
When I was there a couple of years ago it was next to the Bulldog. I took photos of the two Harts, Bulldog and both Gladiators. We had to go to the hall with the resturant for the completed Gladiator, so all the others would be in the main hall I guess.
A couple of photos of their other Glad and the Hart trainer.

Hi,
I received an email from a guy a month or so ago asking me if Flt Lt Smith flew with 263 Sqn in Norway. I haven’t kept any of the emails but I think he said he had been offered these medals but declined because of the high price. Could have been on ebay.
I gave him what details I had from 263’s ORB.

Hi,
I was at Hendon in August 2004 and took the following pics with my 1.3m digital camera. The photos were taken from underneath the Hart at arms length and quite a bit of zoom. I got some good detailed shots. Othe photos of the Ju88 did not turn out so good even when taken close up.
I’ve also added a couple of their Gladiator N5628.

Hi,
My first car was a Talbot Sunbeam 1.3l.
Second was another Sunbeam, but this one had a 1.6l Sport engine, a quick shift 5-speed box with a 1.3 diff. At that time all the ‘boy racers’ were running about in XR3i’s. From a standing start I could beat anything on the road. If I remember it could go 0-60 in just under 5 seconds, although top end was only 85mph.
Now I have a Hyundai Matrix 1.5TDi and the wife has a Citreon Berlingo 1.9D.
I’ll see if I can dig out a photo or two of my Sunbeam.
