With regards to 8Mp and CCD. The hot gossip is that with the 1DmkII going CMOS then the 10D replacement will be CMOS as well. Not sure about full frame, I reckon that may come in the 1Ds replacement.

Anyway have a look around October/November for either a 10DmkII(or whatever its called) or cheaper new 10D’s.

One point about the 300D over the D60 10D etc (henceforth known as Good Cameras).

On the Good cameras there is a focus setting called AI Focus which basically will (try and) keep focusing on a moving object, say an aircraft. It is available on the “sports” setting in the basic mode (i.e the camera chooses the settings) and all of the creative modes (i.e. where you can set one or all of the exposure settings).

On the 300D it is ONLY available in the sports setting so, for example, if one was trying to take a photo of a prop driven warbird flying roughly towards you on a sunny day, the camera would try and use the fastest shutter speed possible to freeze the action. Thus no chance of blurred props.

When I has a look at one in Jessops (I actually like the shop BTW) it did feel rather flimsey and I wouldnt be happy hanging a 100-400 L IS off it to the same extent that I can with my D60 (and yes I am bloody careful with it when that weight of lens is on).

Other than that its a 10D with many of the options removed, I think you have a simple choice. If you cant afford to get expensive lenses (yes I am an L series lens bigot – cant see the point in paying a fortune for a camera with 6.1Mp and then putting cheap glass on it) and are happy with stationary(ish) props and much less functionality. Then go for the 300D. I’m not trying to damn the camera , or your choice of it if you do get it. Just giving my opinion thats all.

If it was me, I would try for a second hand D60 or 10D (but check the sensor first).

Not big enough for my mixed Halifax / Lancaster flight, being grass

You’ve obviously never seen it at 12500ft whist heading vertically towards it at 140mph 😀

My guess is the Tornados were German as there are two Luftwaffe flavoured ones at Brize today.

Mr Guide also said that Cosford have a number of running Mk.5 JPs, which they taxi about in full gear.

They do indeed, they are housed in the Hangers on the airfield and used to teach erks how to prep an aircraft for flight and generally run a squadron.

If you ever get a chance to go round the SOTT then do so, its wonderful to see the old boys teaching the youngsters the trade.

    Hasn’t everybody?

Peter is one of those marvellous chaps who does not believe in having a spare seat and not filling it with some lucky talking ballast.

I totally agree, a superb bloke who realises that he is custodian of a piece of history and tries to share it with and educate as many people as possible.

You’ve been flying in a Magister????

    Guilty as charged 😀
