Welcome to the forum. I havent heard of any 20D shutdown problems, it may be that peole have their automatic shutdown enabled in error, however that only works after a period of inactivity.
There is a Canon photography forum here which I have found and excellent source of advice.
Have a look there but please stay here 😉

Hey Steve, I typed this with TWO hands, jealous yet 😀
I had forgotten about IS 😮
Practise Pan is the key here if you’ll pardon the metaphor. Its as important to an Viation photographer as Swing is to a golfer.
FWIW My technique isnt good enough and will be worked on this spring.
A simple rule of thumb is that you shouldnt use a shutter speed slower than your zoom extension. So for instance if you were zoomed at 400mm then use 1/4ooth of a second. However this doesnt take into account the 1.6x muliplier of the 20d , this would mean that 1/640th in theory should be the slowest (if you can get the camera to shoot it). This isnt a hard and fast rule it just means that you may find a bit more blurring if you shoot slower at full extension. I tend to ignore the 1.6 muliplication factor, others dont.
Being digital you wont be wasting any film doing this but it can be annoying. If you have a spot on panning technique you can get away with slower speeds. The best thing is to get out there and try it.
I have to agree with darren about the elns, you have a top quality image sensor in your camera, you will be disappointed if you put cheap glass in from of it. You’ll get good shots but you’ll be lacking something.
The most important thing is to try using it and have fun. You’ll soon find your preferred settings.
You are going all artistic on us 🙂
Nice photos, good to see some attention being paid to the Shack, methings she needs more tha a wash and brush up but its a start.
