If I was in charge at the time I would have carefully taken the aircraft apart, crated it up (protecting it from the elements) and stored it onsite until funds were available.
An admirable idea however isnt this a bit of a circular arguement as you would have needed the funds to dismantle and store the aircraft, which as Andy points out isnt terribly significant in the overall scheme of things.
