I understood that there were DH repair schemes for repairing the wing and spar outboard of the engine but there was no approved scheme for a repair inboard of the engine so pretty much a whole new wing was needed to get her back into the air again.
Possible repair aside, were they the only options; fly it or sell it?
How did the Lambeth IWM Mosquito TIII (serial?) ever end up being sold? I would have thought an airframe of that stature would have been ‘inviolate’ once it was part of the IWM collection; or was it exchanged for something?
Aircraft are mostly pretty well documented and for all intents and purposes the recovery of a few broken, twisted, burnt or otherwise damaged parts does not add anything to research on them as artefacts in their historical context.
…but…
In another 30 or 40 years the material remains of those conflicts are going to assume more importance as new questions continue to be raised about specific matters. That is a compelling reason why the excavation and recovery of artefacts from these conflicts should not be left any longer in the realm of the amateurs.
Why should that be the case; if these aircraft are well documented and researched now why would all this accumulated knowledge suddenly become lost in the not-too-distant future? If anything the reverse will be true. :confused:
Don’t forget that threatened artefacts from recent conflict are just as likely to be found in scrapyards or museums but I don’t get the impression that archaeologists would be so concerned in these cases…
…maybe the real issue is amateurs wandering onto (or under) somebody else’s turf.

To my mind there isn’t any need for academic archaeology when digging the wreck of an aircraft because the existing knowledge of aircraft is vast compared to the knowledge of the artefacts archaeologist are traditionally trained to uncover.
If authentic Viking longboats could be seen sailing the high seas, it they were being repaired (or rebuilt) in the original manner with the original tools and techniques, if complete manufacturing plans existed and you could go and interview the people who actually built them would anybody get too exited if the ghostly rotted remains of one were accidentally dug up?
Of course there are times when ‘wreck recovery’ will uncover lost information about aircraft types that no longer exist and for which technical information has been lost but I’d suggest that in the vast majority of cases the whole aircraft does not need to be treated with archaeological care. Can’t the trowel and the digger both be used where appropriate?
Of course any human remains should be treated with the utmost respect.

ALL properly-converted Special Duties (SD) Lysanders had the ladder fixed to the port side. They had a handle on the canopy to open it at the top of the ladder.
The Shuttleworth Lysander is a Canadian built example, very well mocked up as an SD example. However, it’s a mock up, rather than a fully configured SD example…..and AFAIK the rear cockpit has not been reconfigured as a SD example – along with, I presume, the single canopy handle.

One more question, was there a particular reason that the fixed ladder was on the port side? Was it easier for the pilot to ‘control’ boarding from the cockpit (as it would be risky for him to get out)?
Well, yes…..as Stan spotted, this piece is marked with the serial B-108, the Canberra that was shot-down by HMS Cardiff on 14th June 1982, however it is also marked with the date 1st May 1982, the date when another Canberra, serial B-110, was shot-down by a Sea Harrier from HMS Invincible.
There was another incident that occurred on 1st May involving a Canberra when the pilot claimed that his aircraft had been damaged by a missile fired by a RN warship. There is however another possible explanation; the Canberra pilot saw chaff rockets being fired and mistook them for missiles and while he was turning away from the RN warship his wingtip struck the sea and damaged it.
Take a look at the wingtip…..could the damage have been caused by contact with the sea?
Well the longest face of the frame (ie the crumpled bit) runs parallel to the mainspar, meaning that the crumpled section would have been at the outermost wingtip. So, if we are saying that we are looking at the underside, then that would make it the Stbd light.

Just pull the mangled end towards you so that the writing is on the underside; aircraft nose to the left, tail to the right, and this bit on the port wingtip.
The PR9 was the only variant NOT to have a stepped nav light…

My interpretation is that forwards would be to the left and outboard would be to the top of the photograph…..unfortunately disagreeing with Pagen01…..but interestingly I agree that this is the underside

To explain, the Shuttleworth Lysander has the fixed ladder on one side and the canopy opening lever on the other; there isn’t a lever on both sides and you can’t reach the lever from the ground.
Hardly the arrangement for a fast turnaround. :confused:
Question: Why is the fixed ladder on the Lysander on the wrong side for SOE pick-ups?
