    The designation system for US engines of that period is interesting…

    …the numerical part being the displacement (in cubic inches).

    Lycoming R-7755 = 127 litres…..ouch! 😀

    engine 5 is – Allison V-3420 X24

    Not sure I’d call it an X-24…..more like a W-24?

    Not bad 3 out of 5 but you dont get the cookie! 😉

    No3 is the Lycoming XR7555

    Inverted V-16?

    Edit – Ha! I was looking at the wrong engine…..Lycoming don’t make engines that shape…..or that big! 😮

    The inverted V-16 is the Chrysler IV-2220.

    I think mystery engine 1 is a BMW 28-cylinder water-cooled radial prototype with contra-rotating propellers (actually I think it is two 14-cylinder engines that can be run independently).

    Do you have any better photos of that one?

    Thanks for the link. I gather that three parts of the Latham 47 were recovered; a wing float and two petrol tanks. If I’ve read it correctly one petrol tank was given to the Norwegians and the other two parts were preserved at the Musée de l’Air, Paris.

    Do any of these parts still exist?

    More importantly, are you quite sure it is a sleeve-valve engine? There are many books and articles that say it is, but I am sure it is a “simple” ported two-stroke design.

    Thinking about it, you’re quite correct, the Nomad wasn’t a sleeve-valve, I confused myself with the Sabre…

    …good job too…..it was complicated enough as it was!

    Was I correct about the Kestrel piston by the way?

    Sorry, yes, correct…..it is a Kestrel piston…..unless it’s a Peregrine or Vulture piston! 😀

    Wasn’t a fuel tank from Amundsen’s aircraft found around the time of his loss?

    I seem to remember somebody had cut part of it away to make some sort of boat.

    Ah, of course…..I couldn’t decide what I was looking at…..a piston engine…..or a gas-turbine!

    The cylinder-head, centre-right, (if that’s what it was), didn’t seem to have valves or spark plugs…

    …diesel sleeve-valve…..doh! 😮

    The middle one is a Daimler-Benz DB610 (or DB606).

    Is it a dished crown or flat? Merlin?

    Very shallow dished crown…..not Merlin.
