Imagine my suprise to see that my average fuel consumption went to 60 miles per gallon from my petrol engine. ( Average motoring produces something closer to 40 mpg ).

These figures come from the trip-computer on your car?

Have you tried filling your car (absolutely full to the top of the filler neck) and checking your actual fuel consumption against what your trip-computer tells you?

You may be unpleasantly surprised! 😉

I doubt if ethanol is actually cheaper to produce than petrol or diesel if you remove the duty and tax from pump prices. It has some environmental benefits but with current world food prices there are other ethical considerations.

There could also be problems with running old aircraft engines on ethanol which currently is mainly used at levels of 5% – 20% blended into regular petrol.

Thanks for the heads-up…..I’ll look forward to it.

Slightly off-topic but on the subject of documentaries and adverts has anybody else noticed the habit of repeating three minutes of a documentary either side of an advert break?

I’ve been watching documentaries for a long time and this is something fairly new; perhaps it is for the supposed ‘goldfish’ concentration-span of the MTV generation? Anyway it irritates the P155 out of me!

If they had been quicker and with a nose for “future business” they should have gotten into this 40 years ago.

Forty years ago people were busy scrapping complete Lancasters (and other aircraft) on land so there was no incentive to wonder what was ‘preserved’ under the sea.

Forget what I said about non sleeve-valve engines…..I was thinking about valve-gear lubrication.

On a magneto CB must surely stand for ‘contact breaker’ and would tie-in with the mention of the cam and lubrication.

Can you read the part number (FB2269?) at the bottom left of the label?

It is from a Bristol engine (non sleeve valve) so my guess would be Jupiter, Mercury or Pegasus.

I think it is time for the UK to withdraw.

I don’t know how much this farce costs us every year (does anybody else?) but the money could be better spent.

Wogan is a genius…..him (and his listeners) are the funniest thing on radio!

Glad to hear you’re safe Pete!

Not sure how many of my nine lives I have used up but I’ll relate (probably) the closest I’ve ever come to drowning.

To cut a long story short, I once went skinny-dipping from the beach in the middle of Torquay, it was 02:30am and I had been drinking heavily. If this wasn’t stupid enough…..it was also October!

Anyway the water wasn’t cold, at least to me it didn’t feel cold at all, and I swam confidently maybe 125 metres out to sea. Suddenly, without any warning, I found myself swimming in seaweed, great masses of heavy rubbery kelp. Without thinking I tried to lift my arms out of the water, and out of the seaweed, but all that happened was that I pushed my head under the water and got a lungful of seawater.

I felt a sudden blinding panic and feel sure that I would have drowned if I hadn’t managed to overcome every instinct to try and reach upward towards the surface again. Instead I let my arms fall to my sides and leaned backwards and kicked with my legs; almost at once I was in clear water again and kicking strongly for the shore.

Well I only lasted from 12:00 until 15:00 and I was soaked…..so I’d like to register my appreciation to everybody who made today a great day, and especially to anybody who was outside, getting wet, at 08:15 this morning!

Highlights for me were the Buccaneers synchronised wing-folding, the Victor (obviously) and the Lightning…

…always assumed I’d seen a Lightning ‘in heat’ until today…..I hadn’t…..I’d have remembered!

If I may quote Homer Simpson: “…and when I gun the motor…..I want people to think the world is coming to an end!”

    Job done…..thank you gentlemen!
