Well at a guess I’d say the engines and props were worth half a million quid!

Again I’m guessing here but if this aircraft has stood outside in the British climate the engines will be a bit damp. What better way to get them nice and warm than to run them up on a purpose built ‘test-bed’ (the props too) before inhibiting them. Hopefully these engines will help to keep something else historic in the air.

Would have been nice if somebody had videoed this beast with all-four running.

Well I had a thoroughly good time…the sun was shining…drove 90 miles there in my trusty Golf TDi and arrived at 08:44…..Ka-Chow! (to quote Lightning McQueen).

I was slightly disappointed in the stalls until I found a nice DB601 liner/piston/connecting-rod assembly…then I found some Bristol Hercules bits too. Had some interesting conversations with some of the stallholders and didn’t even have time to look at the books (which was lucky really…I’ve got too many books).

Sort of ‘half-met’ somebody who is building a Fairey Firefly…awfully familiar sounding story…must be somebody on this forum. :confused:

Spent far more than I intended and will have to sell something to pay for it all…..a kidney probably! 😀

The Ju88-G was recovered from lake Balaton.

Incidentally, I think the crew of a Ju88 were deliberately situated in close contact in the fuselage; the thinking was that it was good for crew morale.

I remember seeing this incendiary bomb on our local news; very interesting to hear where Zeppelin bombs were dropped, especially if it was local, brings the history to life.

Reminds me of a story I read years ago about a bomb disposal officer (in London I think) during the 1939-1945 war. While investigating unexploded bombs he came across a landlord who had repaired his apartment building. Holes in the roof and all the floors had been repaired, right down to a hole in the brick seller floor. Suspecting a bomb had caused the damage the bomb disposal officer asked when the damage had been caused…..and the landlord said 1917!

When they excavated the hole in the seller they did indeed find a bomb dropped by a Zeppelin. Can’t remember where I read that now but it was a very good book; does anybody know what the title was?
