Yes, can’t really disagree with that; also modern petrol (and diesel) cannot be made from crude oil alone, other things must be added…..but none of these things are free.
Agreed, these are rough figures, which were done for another thread to illustrate that the oil companies couldn’t really be pressured into lowering their prices drastically to secure customer loyalty.

I’ve scrapped duty and its VAT. The fuel is 39p including the 10p profit. So where do I jump to 93p a litre?
£0.93 would be the price per litre if the government added current duty and VAT back onto fuel sold on a ‘non-profit’ basis (£0.29 per litre) by the oil companies. This was to illustrate the point above in the previous thread.
And, no loss is made on petrol by the oil companies. They sell the other half for oils, soaps etc. but the profit on combustable fuel is as you possibly the 10p on 29p. The cost of extraction/distribution etc. is already in the crude price.

I suppose it boils down to what the ‘other’ stuff in crude sells for. Much of it will be of comparable value to the oil company, diesel, kerosene, heating-oil, lubricating-oil, bitumen, which will all ‘balance’ the cost of crude for petrol.
You make a good point about extraction also; that should be included in the cost of the crude but the distribution of the petrol to the point of sale will be extra.
It raises an interesting issue. At what point is the price of crude is being measured since the oil companies also do (most of) the refining…..are they selling oil to themselves? 😉
Just to clear up the tax / duty thing here are some figures I did for another thread:
Petrol costs on average £1.049 per litre.
Fuel duty is (before the £0.02 increase in April 2008) about £0.50 per litre and VAT at 17.5% is paid on both the fuel and the duty.
So removing all VAT and duty would make petrol cost about £0.39 per litre.
A barrel (159 litres) of crude oil costs today about £46 ($91 but it has been as high as $100 recently) so that would make the ‘cost’ of the crude in petrol about £0.29 per litre.
Leaving just £0.10 per litre to cover all exploration, extraction, refining, transportation and profit for the oil company and the retailer.
So even if the oil companies and retailers made no profit and the petrol magically appeared in the pumps…
…your petrol would still cost £0.93 per litre!
Also only about 50% of the barrel of crude can be made into petrol (the rest isn’t wasted but it can’t be made into petrol) so the actual ‘cost’ of the crude in petrol is more like £0.55 per litre…
…which means that the oil companies make a loss on petrol. :confused:

The government could easily reduce the price of fuel for all motorists but the treasury would need to raise that money from us somehow. At least a duty on road fuel reflects the damage to the environment caused by cars and helps promote fuel economy in vehicle design.

Not sure why that comes as a surprise to somebody of your intelligence.
The music industry only exists to make money like (almost) any other form of publishing and as record company budgets shrink isn’t it logical to put more money into fewer artists who better guarantee a return on investment. The end result? Music of the lowest common denominator…..most people can’t stand it but more people are buying it than would be buying any alternative.
It must be a pretty frightening time to be a music executive, with the tools for producing music and, thanks to the internet, publishing it, cheaply, to a worldwide audience now in the hands of the public. Even the charts recognise recordings that only exist in hyperspace.

One of the ‘boats’ at Hendon is RTTL 2757, a 68 foot Rescue and Target Towing Launch, built by Vosper in 1957. It (she) was indeed powered by two Sea Griffon engines and was capable of 39 knots.
Interesting that the gearbox only provides a 1:1 ratio (ahead and astern)…..presumably direct from the crankshaft then?

The coupling to the vessel’s propeller is to the right of the picture so does that mean the front (or is it the back) of the engine? :confused:
The ‘big box of tricks’ has to be a gearbox to bring the crankshaft RPM down to something more appropriate for a marine propeller (and to provide a reverse gear for going astern). It looks like the crankcase itself retains the housing for the reduction gear so the original reduction gear is possibly used as the first ‘step’ in the gearbox gearing (why change such major components for a very small production run).
Oh, and if we are going to discuss unknown components let us a least use the correct technical terminology…
…and refer to the component as a ‘box of gubbins’! 😀
Yes, I’d read about the Hermes and don’t doubt that aircraft have been scrapped in this way but how much aluminium would there be in a Fairey IIIF other than the engine?
What are the wings of a Fairey IIIF made of…..wooden spars, fabric covered?
I’m sure after the aircraft was burnt any smaller useful bits of metal would have been salvaged by the local population but notice that the aluminium propeller was left behind…..surely that would fit on a camel. And wouldn’t the reduction gear casing break-up with a good bash from a lump hammer? 😀

Shuttleworth definitely has one that seems to be a permanent exhibit.

The engine has certainly been damaged by fire…..notice the semi-melted state of the most complete rocker-cover. Not sure I’d agree about salvage of the aluminium; if that was the case why leave the engine?
…I have so far found the whereabouts of 23 “Lions” of various series to date in the UK in public and private hands and 8 abroad but I am sure there will be a few more.
Would you care to publish this list here? At least those engines that are in ‘public’ hands.
