Starboard Leading Edge of XL319, down through a stuck solid inspection hatch, we found these

and inside the cockpit and into the H2S Radar area

one of the RAF lads deactivating the old gal
i think the valiant would have to be a new build
Cant narrow it down
I) Vickers Valiant – no chance of that with the rear spar cracks
II) HP Victor
III) DH Mosquito
IV) EE Canberra
V) TSR2
VI) And an odd one a Hawker Woodcock (share surnames XD)
that was another point. The dog was black hence it’s name. and as you say it was acceptable to describe anything black in that way. apologies for the spelling and grammer, i seem unable to type today
The dogs name is a difficult problem for PJ. He’s probably cursing Gibbo for not having the foresight to see that a film may be made about his exploits in future and his dog’s name no longer being acceptable in society 😛 Trying to be extremely careful here as its a delicate subject but if I was PJ, I would be inclined to leave it in. Yes it is classed as racist now but at the end of the day you dont set out to make a dambusters film and change it so its no longer historically accurate. In my opinion, it may be a minor change on the whole of it but if your going to change the dogs name, you may as well have the Lanc’s bombing the Hoover Dam in America. I’m not racist and have never used the word apart from in the context of the film refering to Gibbo’s dog.
Last minute reminder that NEAM’s Battle of the Bulge event is weekend.
i would be very interested in seeing anymore crew cabin shots of the victor as i’ve never had a good look at the backseaters positions. also seei all those WWI fighters makes me laugh at the amount of health and safety reports you’d have to fill in to get one of those old birds into the air nowadays lol 😀
Hi Mike, the Whirlwind as steve says is under restoration at the moment, the guys are busy paint stripping her but due to the weather it can only be done when the north east has a weekend of good weather as its sprayed using schultz guns
the plan is to complete her by summer 2010 i do believe, although i cant give this as an acurate answer as im no longer involved with NEAM
if you are interested i can point SpockXL319 this way and he can give you some better information
cheers scott, it appears that i’m now 1st point of contact for NEAM (for time being at least). if anyone wants more info/immediate updates on whats happening at NEAM, I would suggest that you sign up to the NEAM Forum on
Or if you would like more info on how to get involved etc, i would be more than happy to pass contact info on to the relevant people 🙂
everyone involved but if i had to choose one i think it would have to be “stuffy”
ive also read ghosts of targets past. i bought it specially because 186squadron was the squadron my grandad served on as a rear gunner in the last few months of the war. no mention of him or XY-Q unfortunately :/
i thought that might be the case. whats happening about the lightning is the hanger door being opened? i may also end up as vulcan crew or jack of all trades or is that not going ahead – unless your hogging the limelight 😛
Just a quick final post to remind any interested parties that the photoshoot is on tomorrow (wednesday 25th), the weather may have not been kind in the recent days but we hope that wont have any impact on attendence. I would recommend that sensible footwear is worn (wellies may be a good idea) as the field walking down to the vulcan can end up like a lake as can the pathway over to hanger 1 which itself may be rather wet. any question please feel free to contact me.
many thanks
alex
Hi all, just to confirm the date for the Battle of the Bulge Event at NEAM. It WILL take place on the 12/13th December 2009. We have a good many units set to come and partake to make this a great two days. Any others wishing to partake should contact Bucket ‘O’ Junk on the NEAM forum
http://neam.myfreeforum.org
further information may also be found over there concerning the list of units involved and soon a site plan. Judging by the cold spell we’ve had so far it would be nice to see a bit of snow to match the event, however, with the backwards way the great british weather seems to work we may end up needing desert kit :P.
We also have the photoshoot on the 25th.
Any further details, please feel free to contact me or Scott and we’ll do our best to help. Hope to see you all there.
Alex (Spock)
I agree i think the money is just not out there!! Where would she go if she is grounded in future?
i was down at duxford the other week and was talking to one of the restoration team. according to him once 558 is grounded (he said in the next few years after parts lives have ran out but looking sooner than that now) it will come to iwm duxford.
dear oh dear this is very bad news! short of a miracle it looks like 09 might have been 558’s first and last full season,
