I head him speak a couple of times and met him socially once.
Allthough much pilloried he was a great orator and a nice chap who firmly stood by his beliefs and at least he had the courage of his conviction.
    To quote the BBC website,
“He resigned that position in the lead-up to the conflict in Iraq in protest over Tony Blair’s decision to go to war.
He had been an outspoken critic of the government’s foreign policy from the back benches”.

A great shame, he had much more to give.

The moral of the story might be that if you are a Labour MP of any real fibre don’t go walking in the Scottish Highlands (remember John Smith ? the best Labour Prime Minister this country never had).

Nice way to go though. With his lady on his arm, walking in the land he loved, and knowing he was right !

Rest well Robin Cook, you did your best and that all anyone can ask.

    Phil.

Might look nice and cute but have you heard the noise when Mr & Mrs Tiggywinkle “get it on” ?
It’s all snorting and snuffling and squelching not the “ooh.. ouch… mind me ahhh…ouch…Aowww… sorry”
that with all those prickles you might expect ! 😀

From the FIA website I think this was the “streak eagle” flight,

    Time to climb to a height of 20 000 m : 2 min 02.94s

    Date of flight: 19/01/1975
    Pilot: Roger J. SMITH (USA)
    Course/place: Grand Forks, ND (USA)

    Aircraft:
    McDonnell Douglas F-15 (2 P & W F-100, 20 000 lbs each)

They quote the record to 20km which is 65,616 feet. What the actual time to 60,000ft on this flight was who knows, and would it officially count as any sort of record these days.
Nice idea but why cane the old girl so harshly ?

So much for the so called ‘special relationship’ then 😮
Something that is genuinely felt by those who stood side by side in combat and something that has also been exploited by politicians on both sides of the Atlantic ever since.

    And where was I ?
Stuck in the nightmare of the Baldock by-pass !

Once I escaped I charged up the A10 but by 13.25 I hadn’t even got to the M11 so I knew I wouldn’t make it.
I just couldn’t face walking in late so I slowed and made my way across country, picked up the A505 and stopped off at the Red Lion.
Picked out a ‘certain seat’ and raised a glass.

I sat for the best part of two hours in quiet contemplation and then something caught my ear and I saw in the distance a Rapide drifting northwesterly, somehow I just knew where it was going.

Sorry I missed you Steve, may your God bless you and all who you cared for.
To us the world may seem darker now but my goodness, you have certainly left an everlasting glow behind you.

    Goodnight.
    Phil.

Lets just say that after the first 1 tried to have a go, I put the ****** in his place so quick him and his M8 were both running back to Lincoln very very quickly 🙂

He was able to run ?
Sounds to me like you didn’t do the job properly 😉

    Terrible news.
I never met Steve but we corresponded regularly and I knew how much he was looking forward to marrying Julie and how he adored Haydn.
My thoughts are with them and all who knew him.

Even through this one dimensional medium Steve shone through as a good man with a level head and a passion for life.
    Rest in Peace Steve.
