In 1747 Dr.James Lind conducted nutritional experiments aboard ship in attempt to find the causes of scurvy, a condition that plauged sailors at the time with symptoms of falling teeth, rotting gums, general exaustion and swollen and bruised limbs sometimes after just a few weeks at sea.

He took twelve crew showing the above symptoms and perscribed,
2 to drink 2 quarts (half a gallon) of cider a day :+
2 to gargle daily with dilute sulphuric acid
2 to take 2 spoonfuls of vinegar three times a day
2 to drink half a pint of sea water a day
2 to drink 2 pints of plain barley water a day
2 to eat 2 oranges and 1 lemon a day

After two weeks the fruit eaters were fit enough to resume duty, not surprisingly the rest all felt much worse.
Lind had discovered that Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) deficiency caused crew to suffer from Scurvy.
Vitamin C is plentiful in fresh fruit and vegetables of all sorts but these would always be in short supply on a long sea voyage. Navy doctors decided that Lime Juice should be used in place of Lemon Juice as it has a higher ascorbic acid content and its issue became a daily event along with the rum ration. Result, Royal Navy sailors and Marines making the westward journey across the Atlantic no longer fell foul of the dreaded scurvy on the voyage and arrived fighting fit.
They were subsiquently given the nickname “limeys” by the locals and it has stuck ever since.

    RE: The Pathfinders

Thanks Neilly what a relief, All those years ago and I hadn’t dreamed it after all !!
There seem to be very little out there in the net about the series apart from there were 13 episodes made by the now defunct Thames Televison in 72-72 directed by Gerry Brown, (from an unoffical thames tv site) and starring Robert Urquart as W/Cdr MacPhearson, Jack Watling as “Doc” Saxon and Rutger Hauer who appeared in an episode as a member of the Dutch resistance (from filmographies on the respective actors official sites). Apart from that “Google” and other search engines draw a blank.

LAST EDITED ON 15-11-01 AT 11:41 AM (GMT)[p]I can just about recall the series. I remember it being fairly gripping stuff for young lad but it was a long long time ago, so as to if it has stood the test of time who can tell.
Go on it’s nearly Christmas, treat yourself ! (and let us know if it’s any good):D

Am I right in thinking that the flying shots were done with a large scale radio controlled model and a cockpit mock up mixed with “stock footage” or am I confusing this with something else ?
I seem to remember something about that time one evening on one of those magazine type of programmes that used to be on the telly after the six o’clock news.
A large model Lanc, I think it was over 20ft wingspan, was being demonstrated for the cameras whilst the presenter interviewed some of the actors and production crew. All went well until the owner, making a dramatic close fly by for the end of the piece lost control and his pride and joy flew into the side of an outside broadcast truck live on air.
