Personally I’d love to do it in the smart civil racing livery it wore when flown by Peter Townsend, but I can confirm it will be in a SEAC scheme.;)

Very nice paint job by Peter Medley of Flying Colours at Doncaster (Finningley) and well researched markings, colours and detailing by Steve Atkin. Nice to see a different version of the PR Blue scheme and authentic to the actual airframe too. Just a bit of a shame that after all the hype about the “original engine” being fitted blah blah and this application of a historically correct PR scheme that the opportunity wasn’t grasped during the recent overhaul for an authentic screen to be fitted in place of that incorrect fighter one its had since the Rochester rebuild. I wonder what became of the one it had when it was at RAF Bruggen and then Overloon? Here’s what it should have. This one from PL983 taken recently:

Well it now wears its JG53 emblem on the cowlings and some extensive German stencilling on the airframe…;) Currently sitting on display in T2 North at DX.

Think you’ll find the ex TFC Tigercat went to Rod Lewis(?) and the one with Sessions is the ex-Plane Sailing machine also previously based at DX. As for that Bearcat colour I’m pretty sure it’s the same colour as the TFC Corsair used to be. Perhaps they were painted at the same location when in the States? I seem to remember the first TFC Wildcat was in a pretty fair deep blue US Navy scheme and then got painted in a hideous “Confederate” style glossy “early” scheme. Bizarre…

Don’t hold your breath. There’s lots of things they’d like to do for sure but like most National Museums their funding has been diverted to pay for an elitist white Elephant in the east end of London…

a guy called Kim Stazaker (sp?) also overhauled the smoke system
    pete

Kim currently works at The Fighter Collection at Duxford and has done for years apart from a “rest” at Jeremy Moores place in Swampsville, Norfolk tinkering with Fw190’s and other exotic things for a few years…;)

The reason it looks blue is because that is how it should be. Here’s some background on it from the guy that researched it, namely myself. The scheme represents the aircraft flown by Flt Lt Ray Holmes of 541 Sqn RAF Benson, on 7th March 1945 when undertaking a PR mission to photograph the port of Harburg, to the south of Hamburg. He was intercepted by two separated Me262 jets but managed to evade them and still got his pictures. Anyone wanting a really good read should invest in a second hand copy (it’s out of print) of “Sky Spy” by Ray Holmes. There is no fancy artwork or mission symbols because the aircraft simply didn’t have them. There may have been a small code letter beneath the serial number but the Sqn Operations Record Book for the 7th March is not seeming to be in existance at the National Archive. Further research on the identity of the Spitfire concerned is ongoing at the present time and any code letter that turns up will be appended to the scheme at a later date. 😎

Anyone who has worked in the airline industry will know how things are done. Most airlners on lease are just plain white and the livery is made up of giant perforated stick on stripes, logo’s etc. The perforations prevent air bubbles when they are applied. It is quite sobering to see an airbus arrive in one airlines livery and a couple of days later it leaves in a completely new look and usually with very complex graphics in the logo etc. It really wouldn’t have taken too much to just have Sally B in a basic Olive Drab 41 scheme and then change the fin flash/markings and fuselage codes every other season. Sponsorship could have been sought from the Veteran Bomb Group Associations to sponsor such marking applications and the associated CAA exemption required. With these veterans becoming fewer by the week such an opportunity has probably passed its most potential, however it would be preferable to trading on a film remake from 22 years ago and the associated dodgy scheme and dual nose artwork. I’d rather see it in silver and back in its Glatton markings (just as I originally saw her at DX in the late 1970’s) in an ideal world, but that’s just not going to happen.

Behold… I have seen “The Book”!!!

Many thanks for the update, still eagerly awaiting ‘the book’

I saw the prototype of the book on Friday at DX, thanks to Mk12. You will not be disappointed for your money. It weighs about the same as a house brick! The paper quality is superb, as are the reproductions of original photographic material.

No takers then? I bet if I’d said I needed some help with a Spitfire instead of Dakota it would be different… Oh well, I did ask. 🙁

Any chance of correcting the Dark Earth while 213 is there roobs?:)

If you select “greyscale” or “sepia” it looks much better. However you could always view through rose tinted spectacles for a period feel… 😀

My spotting log is incomplete for that day but I have 80-271 and 80-205 for the A-10’s, XT273 for the Bucc and XX205 and XX195 for the Hawks. I also noted Canberra T.17 WH664. If you go on one of the Dutch spotter site archives they’ll probably tell you what the pilots ate for lunch that day… Alternatively the “Military Aircraft Review” mag always had comprehensive listings of show attendees back in the days when I subscribed to it. They probably have an online archive. There’s also Air Britain as well. Hope that helps. 🙂
