Bit odd them saying he is the first “Spitfire Apprentice since the war blah blah…” We’ve had them at ARC at DX since 2000…
BS381c No.538 is the colour spec. PEXA supply Akzo-Nobel paint (Aerodex, Aeroflex, Aerodur) to us at DX, but any auto paint supplier such as Movac or Morelli can mix to the spec and in the finish and paint type (ie 2K or cellulose).

apart froms the Lancs dark earth but thats another story:rolleyes:.

Ah, don’t you mean Cherry Blossom Mid-Tan (cowboy boots for the use of…) 😉 I’ve seen similar on a certain Mk1a Spitfire 😮
I read that as well, which was why I initially thought it strange that P7350 (commemorating an even-numbered Spitfire) was painted in the B-scheme.
If you look at the relevant page of the 92 Sqn Operations Record Book for September 11th 1940 (available for researchers to purchase from the Nation Archive at Kew) you will find it doesn’t show K9998 as being on operational strength that day. R6760 was however…;)
The odd/even and A and B scheme formula works to a point but there were several batches of Spitfires where it got reversed and it all gets very complex! The research reference material is not to hand at the moment but it was the correct scheme applicable to the subject aeroplane I can assure you 😎
What a bunch of t*ats! Good job we didn’t do that on P7350. Looks like the ‘K’ is too precise (diagonals should be centred on the upright of the K, which is wrong in font terms but true to the original a/c) and the roundel colours look decidedly “iffy” to me. They’ll look dire once it has a bit of sun bleaching.
Not that I’m doubting it (well perhaps;)) but has anyone ever seen an image of this aircraft in flight? I recall some taxiing pictures in FP about 10 years ago and a couple of cockpit shots, but actually in the air…
I plan to participate. As a special treat for those present I plan on performing a wonderful act at Whittleford’s picturesque Red Lion on the Friday night. All of that without having a current CAA low level waiver…

Better have your hard hat and hi-viz jacket on as it’s a building site at the moment. They’re either building a Travelodge, ops bunker, or a very big electricity substation…:D
When I made my annual pilgrimage to Duxford last year I asked someone when she’d be restored. The answer was along the lines of ‘you’re having a larf aren’t you?’… 🙁
That’s not their fault though. The staff are all very keen and dedicated but when their budget has been massively slashed to fund the hosting of the Olympic Games there isn’t a lot they can do. Hence the fact that very little is visually moving forward in the conservation department.
I feel another new thread coming on….”I spent my formative years growing up near Southend Airport…” It seems there’s loads of us on this forum!
Well what a small world it is! I was born and lived in Thorpe Bay (near Southend for non-locals) in 1964. Spent endless time visiting the much missed HAM in Aviation Way and was always mesmerised when the Carvairs flew over our back garden. I clearly remember the first of the ex-RAF Belfasts being ferried in to Southend whilst playing Hockey on the School playing field in Southchurch! Many hours spent on the viewing balcony on the old terminal and some dodgy 110 camera snaps along the way of distant Carvairs, Heralds in the “old” BAF livery and the ex-Malaysian Heralds in storage complete with underwing drop tanks! Discovered Motorbikes and girls in my teens and then entered the world of aviation engineering at 19,with a nine year stint in the RAF as a Rigger on the lovely (yes I do mean it!) Tornado GR1. Did some volunteer work on the Cadman Invader in the National Airways hangar with Spencer Flack and his beautiful Mustang in residence in the “posh end”. Left the RAF and served a 7 1/2 year term at Marshalls at Cambridge before moving job to Duxford 11 years ago. Still known to be taking dodgy snaps that sometimes make it into Flypast etc…:)
Oh, and to avoid thread creep, I saw the “original” Catalina land and take off from the Thames beside the pier and was at the airport when the firebomber Catalina passed through before a slightly later nomadic existance with Aces High and then with the Arnolds…
I wonder if anything now exists of G-BLKZ that could make a potential project after the thugs got hold of it or was she scrapped? .
The salvage was aquired by ARC and the aircraft was brought to DX by low loader by the former owner. After a period of external storage a spares recovery session was carried out and all the interesting bits such as rudder pedals, systems components, undercarriage, wheels, brakes etc were stripped out for possible re-use or onward trading. All that remains is an empty hulk and a now delaminating wing. The aircraft was writted off by the undercarriage being ripped out of the wing and terminally damaging the wooden box structure and laminations, and that was apart from the fire damage. I found it was an “interesting” aircraft to maintain and the ground runs of the engine were always “exciting”…;)
Baby Spitfire heading west over Witham. Returned about a hour later heading east, 1400hrs 1800footish.
Boeing Stearman just south of Witham heading east 15.15hrs
It was T9 PV202/G-CCCA en-route for a South Coast tour of Beachy Head, White Cliffs at Dover and a low pass at Southend after a look at the Richard Montgomery wreck. And all in the sunshine, a hard life for some no doubt, especially piloting such a machine in such conditions on such a route on one’s birthday…;) Alright for some!
This is a “proper paint” application rather than waterwash. Interesting observation by Daz re-B of B film camera ships…
Is this your version of stepercise, Roobs?
Well it’s a variation on wing-walking…:D
It may have been a sunny day but it was freezing running up the Stearman as it takes ages to warm up to operating temperature. Can’t complain though…
[QUOTE=bentwingbomber;1578064]
Roobs you are more like the bass player in the darkness.;)
Who say’s I’m not? I had to find something to do when they kicked me out for that bald bloke that used to string my guitars and say “1-2” into the mikes…:D
