I realise I’m diverting off thread a bit – no, actually quite a lot – but the jokey reference to Aurora reminds me of the occasion around 1990 when I saw a Lockheed U2 coming in to land at BAE Hatfield. I obviously know the where, but can any super-spotter out there supply the exactly when and, most importantly, why?
or did the pilot think it was Alconbury
Who said I was joking 😉
Hello Everyone.
I visited the ARCO/HFL hangar at Duxford on 20/1/06. Unfortunately I was not allowed to record the reg/serials of the aircraft in this hangar. In the ARCO side there were several Spitfires, a Hurricane (on overhaul for the BoBMF), a Beaver, an American registered Texan, a type of jet similar to a Sabre or a Mig, plus a light American military aircraft possibly a Grasshopper. possibly others.
In the HFL hangar there were around six Spitfires in various states from airworthy to derelict.
Does anyone know what the aircraft and serials were in this hanger on that day please?
Very best regards
Chris Wagstaff.
You obviously missed the CIA Aurora spyplane that was in for some drop in maintenance that day. You really must pay more attention when visiting these places if you want to elevate yourself to “Super-spotter” status…reminds me of my super spotting days in the WoGB hangars back in the good old days……ah happy days! 🙂
I remember reading in one of the earliest FlyPasts that during the rebuild the wing was replaced with an ex-Dutch wing obtained from the Technical University at Delft Holland. Can anyone confirm this?
If so what happened to the original wings the airframe came with from Israel?
Cheers
Cees
That was indeed the case and as I understand it the original Israeli wing was sold in the US, rebuilt and incorporated into a racing Mustang
Taz and SM845 left Duxford this afternoon and are due back on Friday. TD248 went from Duxford this morning via Lydd.
Spitfire XVlll SM845 and LFXVle TD248, accompanied by Harvard lV PAF1747 “Taz” arriving at Goodwood on Tuesday! Take your camera 🙂
[QUOTE=Auster Fan]Who, out of curiousity, if it isn’t the two mentioned previously?
The current qualified UK pilots for the Bf109e of Ed Russell are John Romain and Al Walker, both pilots with the Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford. Walter Eichorn has also flown it in the current ownership. If you get your hands on the current issue of Aircraft Illustrated you will find there is an interesting article on both flying the aircraft and a brief outline of the Russell group. The pictures are quite pleasing on the eye as well, especially as the photographer has managed to capture the whole aircraft rather than just the pilots Mk8 goggles for a change. 😉
It had certainly gone when I went past on 26/12/04 and hadn’t re-appeared by 24/12/05. Don’t know where it went though. Probably to HM sales at Stock-only about 8 miles away, but as I haven’t been there for a while we shall have to see what W&R 20 has to say. Unless someone knows different…………..
Roobarb
have you been in there combing your hair then or just sorting another different camera angle on the bronco :diablo:
I took a break from the needle…………there’s only “sew” much stitching up of Hurricanes a man can take before he goes a bit “dopey”….. 😀
And there was me thinking it was left outside in case it had been smitten with Bird Flu…………… 😮
Must be one of the few amphibians around with a cabin with mirrored bulkheads…..perhaps Howard Hughes had it at some point for “entertaining” his Starlets 😉
Probably still in the same container that its been in since November 1992.
It was certaintly still in it at GC last June. I believe it has some “modifications” on the leading edge u/c blister fairings now. Something to do with a dodgy crane…………. 😉
I’m sure I can hear Mk12 rustling through his archives…………
PDS,
161 has been restored to as was, when supplied to the Irish Air Corps in 1951, except for a slight difference in the paint finish, not the colour I might add, as I take cover!
Tony K
The difference in the paint finish is that it probably isn’t as rain stained as it was in service in its “native” environment! Actually we do try to keep it clean when we are released from the coalface 😉
My information says “Yes” it has changed hands.
Yeah, me too! It’s not like this lot to be slow or anything! :p
Try harder in the new year 😉
That was a long walk!
That’s why I took my car up the far end! That and the need to get back to “Area 51” to get the shots of it landing back and taxiing in. The aircraft will probably be doing some more test flying next week dependent on the weather. 🙂
