Non the less, the 4+/5 gen fighters were designed to have an advantage in the transonic range. If both fighters are aware of each other, i suspect the Gripen can use its transonic cruise and better acceleration (presumeably) to drag the F-18 out of fuel.
This to me gives the last gen fighters superiority when supersonic, where a plane like the F-18 can only make brief visits.
If supersonic cruise gives no practical advantage, why were all 4+/5 gen fighters designed to have it ?
The reason why i ask is the classical advantage for a air superiority platform is to go high and fast, to give its missiles range and speed advantage over the adversary.
The Gripen has a unquestionable endurance advantage in the supersonic range, hence my question.
That is the result from sloppy quotes.
There are a Hornet F/A-18A/B, C/D and a Super Hornet F/A-18E/F around as well as a Gripen A/B and C/D, all with different capabilities in general.
Google will help about RAM and RAS f.e..
AN/APG-73 is fielded by the Finnish examples.
From my google search: the F-18 has 2gig RAM and a Nvida 7600 256mb :diablo:
As for the RAS, still no clue:p
Two, larger engines, better radar (APG-79), RAM/RAS.
Does the Finnish F-18 have the APG-79 ? And who the h e l l is RAM and RAS ?
Anyway the swedes apparently gave the Finns a run for the money in Gripen/F-18 exercises, thats why i am asking.
I would like to elaborate on this since I share your thoughts. Eventhough a hi/lo mix might seem as a nice approach on paper it may not be the best solution for a country. It all depends on what type of fighters, and how many, there are to be bought.
The initial costs for buying tools and equipment, training of technicians, pilots and more becomes extremely high if you calculate the cost per fighter when ordering just 12 fighters each. And the logistics will become just as expansive. To this you could add the fact that the two fighter types aren’t that similar.
If we should speak about a really effective hi/lo mix I would say putting Swedish and Finnish airforce together would be a clear one. You’ll have two fighters that makes a good combination performance wise, you’ll cut the training costs by having nearly the same engine (F-404) and weaponry (Amraam, Sidewinder etc) and you’ll have a decent amount of fighters of each kind (about 200 Gripens and 70 Hornets).
Regards,
Cliff
Does anyone agree with Barnes here ? Given the Gripens transonic speed, and the Hornets lack of such. What gives the “high” tag to the Hornet ?
But there is a difference between openly selling your own, civilian but usable by the military, technology, & illegally selling military secrets passed on from the USA. AFAIK there have been no such cases in Japan.
BTW, the equipment was sold by Kongsberg (a state-owned company at the time) of Norway, who got it from Toshiba. Norway is an F-35 partner. How do you feel about that? Is this really an issue of “Japan selling secrets to the USSR”? Why does every mention of this matter I read mention Japan, but very few mention Norway?
It was machinery which could be used to make propellors (among other things). A CNC milling machine. It’s the same sort of machinery (but an earlier version) as a US company sold to China in the 1990s. Hey, the USA must stop selling itself weapons, because US corporations sell high-technology machines to China!
The important difference here is that the technology sold here was never an American technology to begin with. Both Japan and Norway can sell their own tec to anyone they please.
Get it ?
But I don’t think the hardware already on the table now will matter that much with this Norwegian government… I have to say it will be a very difficult decision for Norway as all candidates have individually strong hands. (Other than the jets) Security, eez patrols and industrial cooperation etc.. I am not too convinced they will decide in 2008 like they plan.. more like this time 2009.
(A new Swedish pro-military, pro-nato government was the best thing that could have happened for the Gripen campaign though… )
2009 is election year in Norway, my guess is that the government wants to have made the deal by then.
I am allso sad to say that the political ties to USA makes the Gripen or EF2k unlikely in Norwegian colours.
Let me remind you about the:
F-100, great looking plane in my eye.
Me-262, the first and hardly ugly.
I do understand what you are saying and I do find it odd that a country that is so close to the USA would assist the Chinese,Why? is it just purely for the Dollars?
I still do think Israel will get the F-22 even if its purely a symbol of might in a region that is racing ahead in the arms race,
Yeah, they really need this not to pizz themselves silly going against the Saeqeh.
Where is the threat the F-35 cant handle ?
Kolchuga, Vera and Tamara are multi-point ESM systems that detect RF emissions, not bistatics. They are a step below PCL in capability because they rely on intercepting threat aircraft RF emissions in a non-jamming environment. If the threat doesn’t emit (like B-2 and F-22/35 are designed not to emit), then there is nothing for those ESM systems to detect.
We have marched around this flagpole before. Marketers can claim lots of things, but unless they tell you what they mean by “stealth” it doesn’t mean much.
Vera and Tamara type systems can still detect a non emitting source, if the theory holds true. It is enough for the signal from a radio or tv-antenna to reflect off the aircraft to get a reading.
you can even make a radio antenna with matching wavelenght to the aircraft lenght, and get a dipole signal.
Girls,
you are forgetting the world of politics when you argue the PAK-FA as a no show. Not only does Russia have the knowhow to make a F-22-class fighter.
They allso know there are many willing takers in the world market, nations that see an American superiority in arms as a threat.
In a way you can say that George Bush is the PAK-FA’s best marketer.
PAK FA is a paper plane. It doesn’t beat anything but a rock.
Same was once said about the Su-27 when The F-15 was at the top of the anthill.
Then, for a number of years its capability was downplayed and ridiculed by the F-15 fanclub.
But how many today think a MKI is the underdog ?
There is no single technology in the F-22 that the russians do not master, or are able to master when the apropriate funding is allocated.
What matters is that the russians still has the will to design fighters that contest the best USA has to offer.
My point: The title of the “world’s best fighter” has allways been time limited, the Raptor holds it today, but rest asured it will be contested.
I mean how likely is it for the russians to spend a fortune on a design that is inferior to the Raptor, when they have a ****load of them ready off the shelf ?
Such an astounding level of wishful thinking, or is it stupidity.
The russians have built fighters of world class since WWII. They have designed planes that match the “teen” series in every category.
Why do you think the PAK-FA will be different ?
Oh dear, another one of the indoctrinated Jihadi masses.
No, no jihad here whatsoever. By the way do you see it as jihadist to be against needless killing ? This is strange, i thought the point about stopping the taleban and al-kaida was to put an end to it.
There are people that are in support of stopping them, but on the other hand see that the doings of USA are hardly better.
I do not hate the americans, in fact i have alot of friends there and have visited USA times in the last 12 months. Not one of them think i am a jihadist, isnt that funny ?
They like me think that america has degraded into a banana republic. To quote one of them “It isnt that New Orleans is more corrupt than the rest of USA, its just that it’s more in the open down here”
And by the way, the definition of a banana republic is that it is run by a privileged elite, and the common man has little influence.
The way major cooperations fund any election in USA, means that that they are all in someones pocket.
“one dollar one wote”
I have no objection to fighting radical islam, or stopping Iran from getting nukes. But still the fact remains. USA needs to get its **** together fast if they want any support it this strugle.
In fact i am a decent person, have no chip on my shoulder, but if the USA want my support they need to get down and smell the dirt.
Not that i am paticulary important, but my country has a lot of people like me, and for a Norwegian politician to support USA today, is suicide.
I guess this is allso true for the Danes, Germans, Greeks and the other european countries.
President Bush has already proven that you need a lot more than stealth bombers to win this war.
So therefore i hang on to my previous statement: the americans are ignorant and stupid. They need to come around in a totally different way to get support.
AND DO BELLIEVE IT, If they go about this in the same way they have untill now they will LOOSE.
And nobody wants that, not even me (the jihadist)
Pegon
No, America is not evil, but you are ignorant and stupid. After 9/11 you had the support of the western world. But your leaders saw this as an opportunity to go after Iraq and its oil. Hundreds of thousands of innocent lifes taken, has rendered your support to zero.
Many moderate and sensible people see the Iranian Bomb as something to stop. But lets face it you are all on your own in this, as your actions are hardly better than the terrorists.
Lets face it, USA is the best reason you can get for making the bomb, you will not stop short of killing to make a profit !
