When you claim a threat there, you have to name it. I can not see Russia to attack a NATO-member like Norway any more.

Russia is the only potential threat we have, but you fail to see the moast important thing in peacetime. Norway has huge teritorial waters to protect and control.

The area is ritch in fish and oil. This means that at any time there are a good number of ships around. Some of them are fishing illegaly, and needs the threat of being photographed. Others go down and you need a fast, longlegged plane for spotting.

There are are a number of survivor reprts that says that even if the F-16 was unable to do anything, having one cicling above made a world of difference. They knew that they were spotted and help was on its way !

As for the opinion that developing the Gripen is useless, i have no respect. Giving the plane better range, power and warload is the traditional way to go, and the Gripen has great development potential. The plane was after all made to have a light footprint for off airfield ops, and the airframe can probably handle a lot more.

As for my question regarding the radar-guided cannon in the Gripen, can it be used to shoot down a frontal aspect missile ? After all, any guided weapon has a predictable trajectory and shooting it down should be possible.
Say you have a F-22 or PAK-FA up against the Gripen, the stealth a/c is the first to spot and fire, but the Gripen turns to heading, shoots down the missile(s), closes range and fisishes the bstrd with gunZ:diablo:
    Thus negotiating stealth.

Or am i beeing a bit Tom Clancy here ? 😮

On a sidenote, the Gripen has a radar guided cannon. Anyone know if it is programed to shoot down frontal aspect missiles ?

The lenght of the missile is stated at 3.95m.

This was allways in the cards, Norway will buy the F35 only if the NSM can be carried. Australia has voiced an interest in buying the NSM as well.

The Phantom belongs on the “greatest fighters of all times” list, along with the Spitfire, FW-190 and the Flanker.

    The Tomcat does not.

This thread only seems to highlight the problem the western world is facing.

After having enjoyed a tecnological advantage over the rest of the world since any of us can remember, the cost of new generation fighters is proving to high, even for USA. (180+ Raptors)

If the Nato members are to field a 6th gen fighter, the cost and development has to be shared between them all.

Put that in view of the dirty politics of today, add the complexity of USA working together with UK, France, Germany as well as a myriad of minor Nato members, a true nightmare !

I guess China’s path to become the worlds dominant power is inevitable. 🙁

Because they are based on the same mathematical model developed by ZAGI, an interpretation of the three-pod design of the F-14.

Has this copycat idea ever been confirmed ? To me it seems like the MiG-25 was the first design in this category.
I tink it was operational before the Tomcat flew ?

Reducing yaw and drag by intergrating the engines in the fuselage seems like a obvious idea for a jet twin anyway, no need to copy anyone.

I think only the British got it wrong 😉

The Mig is a short range tactical fighter.

the Sukhoi is a long range interceptor/superiority fighter, it is quite a bit larger than the mig. 🙂

From my laymans perpective, it still seems like the Mig/Su has a slight advantage in slow speed maneuvers. But the F-22 has definitively closed the gap.

This is of course only one of the F-22’s many triks.

P 38 phased out??? It was, actually, the only fighter that was continually produced from before Pear Harbor until Japan surrender in September ’45!

It may have been used in the Pasific, but got phased out as a fighter in Europe as production numbers of the p-51 increased.

The reason was that as a pre war design it was a complex aircraft to make, and maintain.

The F-22 has only one flaw, the cost means that even USA can only afford 180 airframes.

In the end i think it will get the same judgemet as the P-38 of WW II fame.

A wery good a/c, but phased out because other planes could do the same job, at half the cost.

Cobras and Kulbits are totally worthless in today air combat. Nevertheless they are, indeed, a proof of what an aircraft can do.

US stated in many ocasions that the TVC are needed on F 22 to provide this plane an unmatched maneuvrability at 1.6 Mach and 55,000 feets, were Flankers (and Eagles for that matter) would have the agility of a flying brick.

So, in F 22 case the low speed maneuvrability is just a by-product.

have you seen the F 16 MATV with 3D TVC? Some 15 years before the Russians tested the MiG 29 OVT?
The Flanker family is a impressive bunch of A/Cs; with equal pilots an F 15/F 16 would be in a big trouble; however if Flankers will have to face F 22s…

Regarding maneuvrability at 1.6 Mach. How mutch can you actually turn at this speed whithout blacking out ?
