ACIG published several interesting articles on the air operations over Afghanistan in the period 1979-2001:

    Afghanistan, 1979-2001; Part 1
    Afghanistan, 1979-2001; Part 3

Part 2 does not seem to be there for some reason.

Plus you can see a lot of discussion about this topic on its forum.

I wonder if brazil now regrets not buying Su-35 instead of the old mirages. The mirages are no match for the Su-30’s.

Still, those “old” Mirage-2000s increase the option price for Venezuela of intimidating Brazil by increasing the element of uncertainty in a campaign of intimidation.

Haha, Venezuela produces 15% of the US-oil, Venezuela IS a US-interest

But this is reciprocal; Chavez depends on the state monopoly on oil revenues to remain in power and buy his foreign support. Indeed a US Senate Commission concluded that Chavez has the power to produce a spike in the oil prices, according to the WSJ of Thursday, but it deemed it was unlikely Chavez would actually stop the oil flow and, if he did so, that it would last. Refining capacity for the Venezuelan output is mainly located on the US Gulf Coast and in the Caribbean; hence the mutual dependency. The Senate Commission also expected Venezuelan output would gradually fall due the inefficient management of the state oil company appointed by Chavez and the drag of the social programs imposed on the company.

In his recent speech Chavez directly refered to US CVs having to stand further of from his coast line after the arrival of the Flankers, so that at least sugests that he’d be interested in long range anti-shipping missiles. No ASMs no real threat, right?

No real threat with the emphasis on real; if Chavez threathens a US CSG in international waters or in the territorial waters of a nation friendly to the US (i.e. Dutch/English/French islands in the Caribbean), he is toast. The best strategy to deal with the attention hungry Chavez is to ignore him; exactly what the US is doing.

Well one can argue about the impact of several Sukhois in Venezuela but what about the Falklands? Chavez has already stated that the Brits should give back the islands to Argentina and the Argentinan president is one of his closest allies. What if he deploys a squadron of Su-30s in the case of an Argentinan invasion?

Kirchner may be a populist and occasionally sings to his choir about the Falklands, but he likely is not that stupid to really try an invasion again given the present state of the Argentinian armed forces and the reaction this would cause worldwide. Furthermore, allowing Venezuelan military aircraft with Chavez’ bumper stickers on them into his country would likely diminish both his domestic and regional standing.

Then back to the “gun boat” diplomacy discussion. Imagine that a US Coast Guard vessel or a lone USS OHP frigate conducting anti-drug operations in the Caribbean would be threathened, damaged or even sunk by Venezuelan SU-30s or other aircraft (/navy ships). It would simply be game over for the Venezuelan military’s high tech equipment and perhaps even Chavez himself; especially if he would refuse a hypothetical prior US demand for an official apology, indemnities etc for such an incident.

Saudi-Arabia buys French aircraft for Marocco in order to improve its relations with France, which was disappointed after its aircraft was rejected in favour of another type. I am stunned. 😮 We shall see whether such rumours will materialize.

This morning I read in the paper that the Belgian parliament is going to discuss the future existence of Belgium. 🙂 Perhaps we may want to wait for the outcome of this (ever returning) debate in Belgian politics before going any further with this thread.

I know enough of Marxism to recognize emotional quirks loosely based on theories from this school of “thought”. What is in fact lame in this discussion is that you are spouting forth obvious crap:

Another thing is that Bush made a LOT of failures which put the whole matter in the spotlights and even worse, induced a world wide movement, generally referred as anti-americanism. That is a term which was unknown under Clinton,

to which I respond by pointing out that the history of this movement goes back much farther by providing you with some links.

    This:

One thing is that he started the worldwide anti-terrorist campaign which justifies much greater defense spendings (which enables many lobbyist members to take their share).

is merely a variation of the immiserization theory (“ooh, them capitalists with their lackeys are exploiting them poor labourers”. Furthermore, it is patently wrong as Secretary Rumsfeld axed a lot of big “Cold War”-programs over which he faced a lot of criticism from the military establishment, senators from the states affected and the defense industry. So much for the overwhelming power of the military industrial complex.

generally referred as anti-americanism. That is a term which was unknown under Clinton, no matter whether you liked him or not.

Flex, your marxist theories are nothing new:

    http://www.policyreview.org/jun02/kagan.html

    http://www.policyreview.org/dec02/harris.html

Furthermore, you give the Americans, and especially the heavy-handed Bush administration, way too much credit for causing anti-american sentiments in the world. However, as (unfortunately) anti-americanism and neo-marxism are of course very fashionable in anxious Europe these days, we can hardly blame you.

The term colony no longer applies. The Dutch Antilles are independently governed but remain part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (compare “Commonwealth”). The Dutch are responsible for defence varence of the Dutch Antilles.

The islands are not as “independent” as they may look like and the degree of practical independence depends on the island in question. Currently, a commission is reviewing the ties between the European Netherlands and the islands. So far its advise has been to totally reconfigure the relationship between the islands and the mainland, but no agreement has been reached yet. Its advise is to give the smaller islands (the upwind ones) the same status as a Dutch community (i.e. turning them into overseas territories), as they are not economically viable on their own; and the larger ones (downwind isles) more freedom of their own. Also the other islands currently do not like the influence of the largest island, Curacoa.

Just another sign of the slow encroachment of EU totalitarianism upon our societies. 😡

If they really wanted to show Euro pride, how but just one star, done. nice and simple

I can’t agree more with you. A single star like in the picture would communicate much better the intentions of the eurocrats to their populations:

The French navy employs the missile on a twin launcher, dubbed Simbad:

Amazingly, the Simbad system will be the main anti-aircraft armament on the new LHDs Mistral and Tonnerie:

    Really?!

Yeah, as far as he is able to get them, he does [well, that’s what he says he does  ), see the ACIG-forum discussions concerning conflicts and aircraft in the middle east.

I partly agree but i wonder these are Western sources, the question is get pictures and Official press relaese of both sides, by that i mean if you want Russian sources go to the Russian webpages, if you want Israeli sources get Israeli sources only checking all the sources from the different warring parties you can more less guess what you will prove by pictures or hard evidence.

As far as Tom Cooper is concerned, he also employs Syrian, Egyptian, Iranian, Russian etc. sources whenever available and he actively seeks them. Furthermore, he also has contacts in these countries and visits these while doing research.

Why? Because you can not justify without hard evidence Israel`s claims supported by the West or Syria`s supported by Russia all this amounts to a war of words, in few words a war of Propaganda.

That’s why we rely on air combat historians like Tom Cooper and friends to sort it out for us. Moreover, we prefer to neglect writers whose main objective is to write a hymn of praise of a certain aircraft or country because of some ideological motive. Hence, we dump writers such as Richard A. Gabriel and Yefim Gordon.

So far, ACIG has a list for Syrian kills and a list with Israeli kills. These lists suggest the Israeli claim of zero losses is nonesense and that the AA-tally is heavily skewed towards Israel despite the nice propaganda of a dictatorship trying to hide its failures from the population.
