News about final Flanker

Su-35 to Fly in 2007
(AviaPort.ru)An informed source of the military industrial complex has reported that OAO Sukhoy OKB is working on a transitional type of fighter under the designation Su-35. In the opinion of the AviaPort.RU source, this aircraft is supposed to be an intermediary type between fourth and fifth generation fighters.
The Su-35 actually may be put into the air in 2007, as air force commander-in-chief Vladimir Mikhaylov has declared repeatedly, the source thinks.
According to his information, individual elements on this aircraft will be perfected for the “future tactical aviation aircraft
complex: (PAK FA) program, by this airplane is not yet a PAK FA.The Su-35 is being created with the considerable Su-27/30 reserve, most of all the airframe. As of today there are different opinions about the composition of the Su-35 airplane’s avionics and for the time being a final decision still has not been adopted on the composition, the source said.
According to him, development of a transitional fighter model is predicated by the need to “hold onto the marketplace” – the demand for Su-27/30 fighters will fall, and a new model of fighter should appear before the appearance of the developed PAK FA fighter.
As is well known, experimental design work on the creation of a more revolutionary aircraft – the Su-35 fighter – began last year at the Sukhoy OKB. They already have christened this aircraft at the OKB as a generation “four plus-plus” fighter, and at Tekhnokompleks (the developer of the avionics, they call it jokingly the “five with a minus.”
As has been reported earlier, the Su-35 computer will receive information from 150 different antennas and sensors which have been place along the whole fuselage. The fifth generation airplane will have several orders of magnitude greater of such “sense organs.” Besides changes of the look of the cockpit, the Su-35 will be less visible for radar stations. They will achieve this using a special radar wave absorbing coating – in fact using a new paint with which the aircraft will be painted.
It is planned to approve some ideas in the area of avionics and weapons which are being developed for the PAK FA fighter program on the Su-35. In the opinion of specialists, the upgraded AL-31F aircraft engines being installed on the Su-37 also will be a transitional model to the future AL-41F aircraft engine which is being developed by the Saturn Scientific Production Association.
Hello
erm read up on project Ventrivale and sensor fusion solutions applied by DRDO to all upgrades and especially LCA.
Well, I have readen some bits regarding Project Vetrivale, but not about anything in the class of sensor fussion…care to enlighteen me?. Don’t know what did LCA have to do with Su-27BM/Su-30MKI’s sensor fusion thorugh :). Accord to Sukhoi, the Su-27BM would receive information from more than 150 aerials/sensors.
It’s quite a neat EW suite actually. Read up on it.
Have I said the contrary?…is the EW set interconnected to all the rest of the aircraft systems?…if yes, please enlighteen me. Zero sarcasm here please.
Talk about this when KS172 comes around. MKI currently carries the best AAM armory the Russians can muster. It cannot have long range weaponry if it doesnβt exist.
Well, the KS-172S-1 is both offered to India (AFAIK from some Indian sources) and its in development for the Su-27BM. Is a project objective, say as much as arming -MKI with Brahmos-A. About best AAM armory Russian can master, AFAIK, even the Su-27SM could do it. Both R-27E/ER/T/ET/P/PE, R-77, R-73K/L/E and R-60MK. Don’t know what else could a Flanker carry in air-to-air. Now obviously, the -MKI is better in the role. But we aren’t talking about this aren’t we?
Perhaps you should read up on those canards on the MKI. Those work with the TVC and the standard control surfaces.
Thanks for the hint. I have do it, years ago. And is nothing about knowing or not the unstable triplane layout of the -MKI, is about the Russians just get the hint (or idea) that other approach (one using a more advanced FBW software) and lighter skin/nose section could get a similar performance without the expensive and low MTBO-prone TVC of the AL-31FP (not to counting the really improved T/Wr of the new Flanker with the improved AL-41F1), if that allows me even 2/3rds the performance in high alpha of the -MKI, for me is a good business. -MKI’s aero performane is awesome, but I would guess the foreplanes must add something to the RCS, something the russians try hard to cut.
It is a big aircraft not designed with LO features in mind. I don’t think there is much you can do about its RCS.
Russians seems to disagree. Haven’t read it?
AFAIK datalinks are said to be Indian. Same for the Bison and all other local upgrades. The Ks came straight with no modifications.
Thanks. Any info about this?…could be just that the Indians runs the improved K-DlUE from Polyot (the improved export version of the K-DlAE/TKS-2-27E)…
Thanks for your answers.
Pit
Well the MKI doesn’t have a tai-mounted radar, nor improved engines (when you read 12800kgf of thurst is correct for a baseline AL-31F _or like the AL-31FP used in MKI) just its the maximum-capability of the engine at cost of time-life_, normal setting is 12500Kgf, and training settings is 11800kgf) like the AL-41F1 that will be used, nor the improved Irbis radar from Tikhimirov (but this could be refitted in the MKI at cost of money) nor the new “sensor fussion” arquitecture between all the sensors of the aircraft, nor the advanced LO solutions that are being applied in some Su-27M prototypes, nor the improved EW suite (ok, MKI suite is very good, let’s see what the BM would be), nor the advanced long range AAM weaponry (Ks-172’s 300km and maybe improved R-77 versions as they come), nor improved aero solutions (they have found that TVC is not necessary exploring the FBW dynamics at their peak, but maybe SM is not a requeriment there)…nor the 30% less weight that would allow more fuel/weapons to be carried…
I’m sure some of those things could be applied to MKI (Ks-172 for sure if India wants, Brahmos _instead of Yakhont-M) if India wants, must probably the new Irbis or a derivative, and in the long run maybe an improved version of the AL-31F)…but some things like the LO improvements, the reduced weight improvements, and the new aero/layout looks out of scope here.
Anyway today and for some 4 years (being optimistically) the Su-30MKI Mk3 and any further mod of that aircraft will be the “top-dog” of the Flanker Multirole family of aircraft…just behind in some techno gizmos the Su-32 would bring next year :)…
Querstion: What LO improvements did the Su-30MKI Mk3 entails?…I have heard “local RAM” and no more…That’s all?
What happened to “Poepeye” integration?, and Brahmos-M one?…is the IAF using original TKS-2-27E datalink from the Su-30K (as used in Cope India) with the MKI?, or other set?, or nothing at all?…would India buy the Region glider kit for their aircraft like some times JDW said?
Regards
Look at the Su-27BM. That’s the “ultimate Flanker” by far.
Thanks for the pic martinez, can’t say it looks anything close to a hi-tech helmet that makes the R-73 lethal. But I guess it is the very first operational HMDS helmet. Who will be the manufacturer for the helmet by the way?
cheers,
Arsenal, first HMCS was american VTAS used in F-4J Phantom-II along AIM-9H Sidewinder SEAM.

I could help you in both the 1989 period and the 1992 one.
For the beggining, let’s see the Zhuravliks:
1992, Voyska-PVO
2 OA PVO
61 IAP (Baranovichi, Belorussia)
6 OA PVO
177 IAP (airfield Ladiynoye field in the environs of Leningrad)
689 GIAP (Nivenskoye, Kaliningrad obl.)
54 GIAP (Vaynode, Latvia)
8 OA PVO
136 IAP (Kirov, Crimea)
62 IAP (Bel’bek, the Crimea)
209 GIAP (Volga, Astrakhan obl.)
10 OA PVO
431 and 470 IAP (Afrikanda, Murmansk obl.)
641 GIAP (Rogachevo, Is. Novaya Zemlya)
941 IAP (Kilp-yavr, Murmansk obl.)
11 OA PVO
60 IAP (Dzemgi, Khabarovsk Edge)
47 IAP (Zolotaya, Sakhalin)
365 IAP (airfield Sokol, Dolinsk, o.Sakhalin)
32 OA PVO
9 GIAP (Andizhan, Turkmenia).
19 OA PVO
171 GIAP (Airfield Bombora,. Gudauta, Abkhaziya)
562 IAP (Krimsk, Krasnodar edge).
Moscow air defense district
611 IAP (airfield Bezhetsk, Dorokhov Kalinin obl.)
Not all those units held full Polk-force structure. Per example the 136 IAP (Kirov), was just reforming with Flanker, the 62 IAP (Belbelk) too. The last had only 14 Su-27 in inventory by 1992. Some Polks had mixed units of Su-27 and other aircraft (foremost MiG-23P and Su-15TM, but also MiG-31 like the 365 IAP at Sokol)
Now, Frontal Aviation
1 Separate Far-Eastern VA
216 IAP (First Airfield – Khurba, Khabarovsk Oblast)
4-VA
159 GIAP (Chojna, Poland ]
582-1 IAP (Klujevo, Poland ]
24 VA
831 IAP (Mirgorod, Poltava obl.)
We could add to these Fighter Aviation Regiments:
4 TsBPiPLS Combat Training and Retraining Center at Lipetsk controlling the
760 IISAP at Voronezh.
237 GvTsAP at Kubinka with an Eskadrilya of Su-27 (along MiG-29, Su-25 and some visiting Su-24M)
148 TsBPiPLS at Savasleyka, similar unit to the Lipetsk training Center but for V-PVO.
And that’s basically all for the Su-27 in Soviet air Service π
K= Korabelniy = Naval π
There’re 12 Su-27SM with the 23 IAP in the Dzemgi Air Base near Komsomolsk-na-Amur in the Far East MD.
Other sources said there are only 7 back at 23 IAP and 5 at the 4 TsBPiPLS’s 968 IISAP training regiment at Lipetsk
Budha, you made the day π
Have to re-read (for 25th time :), Fulcrum.
And again and again and again π
I don’t want to be a ******* from the past :D, but the MiG-23 incident happened accross the Akhtubinsk ranges, and was recalled by some personal of the Soviet VVS then as “an accident with an anti-helicopter missile that shot-down a civilian aicraft”…
Obvioulsy the true nature of the R-77 program, was very dark even for the most part of the VVS then….
Sorry for this “flash of the past” π
Just like the Tochka-R I think using a passive (and field-interchangeable) homing head (the one in the Tochka-R with a CEP of 45m)
The CEP of the Iskander is 10-20m, more than enough for doing the work!
About the new MiG-29K for the IN
Article translated from russian, very detailed, enjoy!
MiG-29K ACCEPTS REAL OUTLINES
RSK “MiG” HAS GENERATED INDUSTRIAL COOPERATION ON the SHIP FIGHTER
The program of creation of a deck fighter on RSK passes “MiG” in a practical plane. At press conference on February, 3 heads of Corporation have declared start in manufacture of a head party MiG-29K/KUB.
By present time formation of industrial cooperation is practically completed and corresponding contracts are made. Ramenskoe PKB from structure NPTS ” represents itself as the system integrator of avionics, Corporation ” Phasotron-NIIR ” develops and “Zhuk-ME”, and MMP him lets out BRLS. Tchernyshev delivers engines RD-33KM
The contract more than 700 million dollars on delivery of Naval Forces of India 12 single MiG-29K and 4 double MiG-29KUB has been signed by total cost on January, 20, 2004. RSK “MiG” also is responsible for training the Indian crews, delivery of simulators, spare parts and creation of the center on service of planes on the basis of the customer.
Though the contract not so big, is many reasons to execute it precisely and in time (deliveries are planned for 2007-2009). In that case it is possible to expect for the additional order in 30 machines (with delivery till 2015) Besides MiG- 29K is unified with an overland variant MiG- 29M/M2 which is offered in the tender of the Air Forces of India on 126 multi-purpose fighters.
Now under the program of tests MiG- 29K it is involved eight planes. Within 2002-2004 on them 600 flights are executed almost. And during tests initial MiG- 29 in a variant for the domestic fleet, come to the end in 1992, two prototypes have executed 450 flights and 80 landings to an aircraft carrier ” Admiral Kutnesov “.
Designing an export variant MiG-29 have started in 1999. According to contract 2004 India has lead payments, and on accounts RSK “MiG” came money of the first tranche.
The general director – general designer RSK “MiG” Alexey Fedorov has commented on this event: ” the Tranche became a signal of that the customer is satisfied with a course of works on MiG- 29K. It is a good, positive signal for us. For reception of a tranche we have executed all necessary conditions. As a whole the contract is carried out according to all conditions which in it are registered. His financial part is very well fulfilled. There is a stage-by-stage scheme of payments, which constantly financial podpityvajut performance of the contract. We are grateful to Naval Forces of India which position has allowed to construct such capable scheme “.
The shape Indian MiG-29K, basically, is generated. Not having undergone changes on external geometry, the glider is amplified counting upon the big weights: normal take-off 18,5 t and maximal 24,5 t. Range of flight and useful loading have increased. Application radiopogloshchajushchih coverings has reduced EPR the plane in 4-5 times.
In opinion of director NPTS ” OKB him. A.I.Mikoyan ” Vladimir Barkovskogo, in a present kind MiG- 29K concerns to generation of fighters 4 ++. It distinguish a “glass” cabin (without reserve electromechanical devices), engines with system FADEC, digital system of the remote control, open architecture of “board” on the multiplex trunk, a multimode radar with modern internal structure and system of processing of the signals, new optiko-electronic station, nashlemnaja aim system and a ground complex of development of flight tasks.
The set of means of defeat, in the general, is insignificant: on an aircraft carrier there is not enough place for polytypic means of defeat. However that have remained in a complete set MiG- 29K, allow the plane to solve a circle of the problems assigned to him. Among them rockets RRV-AE and R-73 such as ” air – air “, protivokorabelnye Kh-35 and Kh-31A, protivoradiolokatsionnye Kh-31P and corrected bombs KAB-500. The open architecture of “board” allows to integrate additional types of arms, in case of need.
The system of refuelling in air now corresponds not only Russian, but also western to standards that MiG- 29K from various types of air tankers allows to refuel. And in case of a suspension bracket of the container the GROOVE-1MK the fighter and itself can represent itself as zapravshchika.
The Indian variant of the plane will receive modified motors RD-33MK with increased up to 9 t draft. The charge of air through the fan has increased, on 40 degrees the temperature of gases on an input in the turbine is raised, anticorrosive coverings are put. The motor “became cleverer”: at him the control system with the full responsibility such as FADEC which operates both the power unit, and an air inlet has appeared. On a new level means of diagnostics of a condition of a power-plant that allows to proceed to operation ” on a condition ” have left.
Having let out an experimental batch, MMP him. Tchernyshev has started manufacturing serial samples. They will appear in 2006 (a cycle of manufacture RD-33 ?? – 15 months). Bench tests proceed with the purpose of acknowledgement of a resource in 4000h.
Radical changes were undergone by structure of the onboard equipment. As the basic sensor control the “Zhuk-ME” already delivered on export in structure MiG- 29SMT. “Zhuk – ME” simultaneous bombardment of four air purposes and mapping of a terrestrial surface with the sanction of 5 m (in the future – up to 1 m) acts BRLS provides. RSK “MiG” has already received such nine radars for a complete set of serial planes. In a variant for MiG- 29K one “Zhuk” is collected and three are under construction more – it is required for OKR so much. The first copy is established on stand GosNiIaS created for adaptation BRLS with other elements of an onboard complex.
Works by new variants MiG- 29 carries out ” very powerful and significant part ” RPKB, – Alexey Fedorov has told. To firm the role of the system integrator of the onboard equipment MiG- 29K, MiG- 29SMT (both in an export make, and in a variant for the Air Forces of Russia), MiG- 29M/M2 and a perspective easy fighter is charged.
Choice RPKB – logical, considering wide experience of interaction with the Indian customers and foreign suppliers which ramenskie experts have received during works on Su-30MKI. For MiG- 29K the system of navigation Sagem Sigma-95 will be applied already tested on Su-30MKI and MiG- 29SMT. At designing the deck plane experience of use of standards MIL-1553B is taken into account in the field of complexes on the multiplex trunk, for the first time realized in Russia on Su-30MKI. And the ground system of planning of flight tasks “Sapphire” for Su-30MKI becomes a basis similar for “MiGs”.
The wide experience of co-operation with partners from India allows RPKB to hope for high-quality and duly integration into a uniform complex MiG- 29K of the Indian accessories: systems of near navigation, radiovysotomera, UKV-RADIO STATIONS, stations of radio engineering investigation and active handicapes.
The information field of a cabin of the pilot MiG- 29K is constructed on three multipurpose liquid crystal displays. On double MiG- 29KUB their quantity grows up to seven. All of them – manufactures NPTS “Tehnokompleks”. The size of the screen – 152 on 203 mm, the sanction – 1024 on 768 pixels. ” It is a modern level. It allows pilots to distinguish malorazmernye the purposes and precisely to aim “, – president “Tehnokompleksa” Givi Dzhandzhgava has told in interview “VPK”. Among other innovations it has allocated the advanced computing system, four-channel multiplex communications, adaptation of a cabin under application of glasses of night vision. ” The new large-format indicator on windshield (ILS) differs very high brightness that allows to display on a windshield and the television information. It enables the pilot to aim through ILS day and night “.
” The glass cabin ” is supplemented nashlemnaja with system tseleukazanija. While helmet TopSight of firm Thales is planned for MiG – 29K. ” But from our point of view, the similar sight of firm Sagem better approaches. He has some advantages. Besides it is better to work with one komplektatorom – Sagem which delivers us system of navigation “, – considers Givi Ivlianovich.
Other innovation – flesh-cards for input of the flight task in systems of the plane before a start. During flight on a card his key parameters enter the name. Then these data are used at analysis of flights. It will allow pilots to be prepared better for performance of the following tasks, to adapt for a battlefield.
Training of crews of Naval Forces of India and delivery of simulators – a part of the contract on MiG- 29K. Also it is supposed to involve in these works “Tehnokompleks”. At ramenskih experts – the concept of training of crews. ” Our point of view will be, that the system of preparation letnogo structure should include ground simulators, sports planes and “sparki” – double variants of warplanes “, – speaks Dzhandzhgava. At international exhibitions “Tehnokompleks” showed stands of cabins Su-30MK/MK2. They are easy for transforming to simulators. Similar stands-simulators are planned and for family of planes MiG- 29.
Working off of separate elements of an onboard complex MiG-29K passes MiG-29SMT and MiG-29MRCA on flying laboratories, planes. Then they will “be integrated and be tested in common on double MiG-29KUB. Now “Tehnokompleks” truditsja above the complete set of the equipment for the first letnogo a copy MiG-29KUB which will rise in air at the end of 2005
Vladimir KARNOZOV
Don’t know about the M2000-5MkII, but the INA’s MiG-29K will come with the Thales Topsight-E HMD, thorugh the russians recomended the new Sagem product (the one the Rafale F2/F3 will use)…let’s see what the Indians will chose.
About the range comparations, both the M1/M2 and the M2K-5mkII are in the same class..I would even say the new Fulcrum compares very very well with Falcon Block 50+ (but without the CFT) in this regard.
Paul:
A much obliged reference that, many thanks for sharing it!
Just some questions:
1) Is the Ts100 (I suggest the improved Ts100M as used in 9.13S) the RADAR DATA COMPUTER of the N-011M Bars-M in Mk1 and Mk2. That looks correct, but in an article you published in ACIG some time ago it says that in the second batch (Mk2) the N-011M Bars-M would include the Baget-55 class of radar processors, in third batch Indian ones.
2) What happened to the Chelniok TWT that was promoted in the N-011M radar some time ago?, I did remind from your pages plus some literature that it would had a 8.5kW peak power and a 6kW average power, quite impressive. Those figures aren’t exact but they made the point…what happened to it?
3) Which is the main element responsible of the SAR performance in a radar, RDP or the DSP?, if you could elabore in this I would be very grateful.
4) Is the N-011M Bars-M Mk2 and Mk3’s software written in C+ like the one in the N-001V (Su-27SM) and Pero/Panda radar for upgrade?…is the Zhuk-ME for the MiG-29K’s software also wrotte in C+?
5) For our Indian friends: In a recent Russian article regarding the future MiG-29K for IN it says the Indians selected the Thales TopSight (don’t sure if the Topsight or the Topsight-E) for the plane. Did this HMD (not HMCS!) will be part in the future of the MKI?, looks like a nice toy!
6) Last for our friend AT: What is the RDP and DSP of the N-010ME Zhuk-ME, I know is one specimen of the Baget serie, but which exact one?, I have read that the one in the Kopyo (Kopyo-21I?) for the Bison has a 1.23GFLOPS in the RDP and +200 MFLOPS in the DSP…
Best Regards! :p
Really nice page you have Ken!
Good work!
