Rafmatt, PistonRob,
I thought by then they had just about stopped you spraying stuff, I know they used to roller the Tens when I left in 89, any resprays went to Luton I think at the time..
officially yes but there was alot of spray lancing of paint stripper on a VC10 going on whilst i was in n out of the hangers. i did see them in primer but never actualy seen the spraying going on whilst i was there except for the 2 Sea kings i did.. a few half primed/painted Phantoms and Tornados F2/3 were kicking around. it was about this time the pin holes for a load of the Swing wings on Tornados were screwed up by Marshalls.. there was also a row of Canberra and Argosy aircraft in various states of repair and strip down. legend has it that i think 5 Canberras were sold for £1 a piece to the scrap man 😮
May I muscle in on the thread title?
I have restarted modelling and recently bought a selection of Humbrol enamel paints, from Humbrol. Some are very liquid/runny and some are quite viscous after equal stirring time. The thin paint is messy to apply ( I do not airbrush ) and require several coats, whereas the thicker paints are applied easily and thickly. Is there any reason for the variation in viscocity? Many thanks.
ive only heard and read and not tried but “Tamiya” paint appears to be far better than the Humbrol eco friendly rubbish. the paint has a bigger sellection and accurate in colour shades. again its down to prep sometimes and for a better fininsh its always good to use a primer undercoat
excellent pictures. the twin shot and the Eagle taking off are most impressive 🙂
I was posted to St Athans when I carried out my Painter and finisher training.
And I’m really glad that It’s still getting used for Aviation. Can someone tell me if the Army are still on the other side of the camp?
That was my job also. i only trained there though but came back a couple of times on detachment to paint Sea Kings n things. 1990-97 😮
eeee the last time i was down your neck of the woods a Vulcan was still there in outside storage and nearby i had a good nose around a hanger stuffed with about 7 Spitfires in bits and a Mossi under resto. over in one of the hardened aircraft shelters was a Tornado after being brought back from the 1st Gulf War. the nose had been broken off just aft the rear cockpit and there was sand in every crevice. got somes pics somewhere 😉 ..
Cracking shots by the way.. seems as though yoiu were well ready for the arrivals and not working too hard 😀 .

I have various bits n pieces of my collection on display in the local history museum in Oswestry. theres staff constantly walking around and all the bits are in cases or high up on a wall and away from grubby paws.. anything goes missing or damaged is covered by their insurance.. 🙂

are aircraft flying in areas of vast nothingness such as parts of Australia etc required to carry basic survival kits or even hand held transmitter radios?, as per yachts in the open sea.
surely by now some kind of signal would have been picked up either from mobile phones/radio etc as there may be as many as six on board?. 🙁
