I’m restoring the Metheringham control tower. If you have sleeping bag then your more than welcome to kip over and keep the pikeys away 😉

that would be a cracking weekend break, i would love it n probably a few forum posters on here would be daft enough also? but i dont think the misses would be up for it lol.

Ironbridge is close to Cosford, yet has interests of its own (Industrial museums) and is in Shropshire, one of the most beautiful counties in England.

the Wartime Aircraft Recovery Group (WARG) have their very interesting museum at Sleap airfield (Shropshire Aero Club), inbetween Wem & Shrewsbury. its about 3/4 an hour from Cosford.. also just down the road from Cosford on the M54 is the Boulton Paul aircraft museum. both of these are of course smaller museums that are manned part time so best check opening time beforehand.

Sleap incidently are having their Battle of Britain dinner this sat eve with some wartime veterens attending for a good old nosh up. places still available, £18 a head i think?

as has been said, theres a certain something about seeing them in this state rather than having the attentions of vandels or the smelting pot. its a pity about the vampire becouse of its wooden structure..

is there any endangered species amongst them?

where in the country is this place??

I’d say the video posted by ZRX61 tells us pretty much all we need to know, the full sequence of events, but without the ultimate conclusion of them; if this video had been posted right at the beginning, I dare say it would have avoided most of the speculation, and the negative response to that.

I don’t understand the attitude that air crash investigators are gods to be revered; my friend died in a chipmunk 30 years ago, the report suggested that loss of control may have been caused by water sloshing about in the rear fuselage, having permeated through the doped fabric…….

When i was stationed at Coningsby. i used be a painter and finisher and spend as much time on the BBMF aircraft as pos. anyway one day i was poking around the rear end of the Dakota doing a repair when i accidently bumped a fabric faired part near the rear wheel. the bit that i bumped should have sounded like tight drum but instead it was a dull thud of a water balloon.

a quick slit with my stanley knife on the lower part opened up a floodgate. there was a bucket n a half of water in there. the Dak had not long come back after a refit of some sort and a simple thing as eyelets had been missed. im not saying that this would have brought the aircraft down directly but no doubt corrosion would have had an effect over time.

i had a pat on the back from the FLT SGT.

    sorry for your loss

Peter I have deleted that post above yours,

for those who hadn`t seen his post! well!! quite frankly i found it offensive so im glad its been removed.. he`s done very few posts on here and the ones he has done have been to all intents “hyporcritical” and of no help at all. as its been pointed out he has visited more aircraft crash sites than ive had hot dinners..

sorry moggy but it grated me. dont know the bloke but am not impressed and i wont mind if you remove my post as being “to personal”

Its very difficult to understand the impact physics of this terrible crash when you see the partially deployed chute hit the ground at .05 in this HD clip.

Sorry, but I can’t leave this link in. See below. Moggy

number 1, its a very sad and desperate thing to say this far into the subject as everyone else had backed off to try and treat it with abit of respect

number 2, the canopy as far as ive seen was still on at the moment of impact.

    im sorry to add
I was told that the aircraft was to be restored.
And i work at the Aeropark!
no chance of that. it may get a wash now n then but i will keep an eye over that way from now on..

i almost became an accident statistic in one of these many moons ago when i was an air cadet acting as ballast with a few mates for the trainee heli pilots at RAF Shawbury sometime in the 1980`s…. we were sat in the back all strapped in ready for lift off into a night flying exercise for an hour or two..

the engine was wound up up but all of a sudden the Wessex started rocking violently from side to side and the next second our collective heads were thrust into our laps and the Air Loady was forced on the floor as we shot off into the night sky..

apparently the instructor took control at the last second. we had reached a point where flying speed was almost achieved and the undercart had the weight lifted of it but we were still on the ground “but in a crosswind”.

a most dangerous situation as the Air Loady explained later through a helmet surrounding a rather ashened face

    happy carefree days lol
