in the dark distant dusty corners of my memory the Mitty chap was i think a WW2 era guy who passed famously himself off as someone else. i cant fully remember though so dont quote me on that..

the collectors assistant didnt have the authority to collect by all accounts. he had in the past been seen in RAF uniform collecting on behalf of whoever?. i dont think the Regiment lads took kindly to him wearing a uniform and beret that he hadnt earned the hard way…

enjoyed the arrse write up though

there was a Walter Mitty type at Cosford airshow a few years ago collecting for the para`s. he had a collection box and looked the part with his veterens silver hair and smart para uniform. up until the point that two long serving members of the regiment asked where he served etc. the answers didnt add up and he was swiftly taken away by some bobbies. it all kicked off in front of my trade stand….

i came across another of the type during my aviation artist career. a guy at a flying club claiming to have been on the raid that sunk the Tirpitz with 9 sqn. he was evasive to my questions of which Lancaster he was in and crew members etc.when i checked his quite distictive name against the crew lists for that raid and others, low n behold there was no mention of him. i think that he realized he had been found out as he never showed up at the club again..

i remember watching a program 3 or 4 years ago where they built the glider as close to the design as poss “and flew it”. i think it was covered in blue/white checkered tablecloth cloth.

going back into the early 1990`s i was stationed at Coningsby. one of the griffon engined spits needed new engine cowls. a guy came in with flat sheets of alloy and made the cowls and scoops over the week “on site”. truly amazing to watch. i cant remember who it was which is a shame. the old cowls were skipped. i even walked by them whilst they sat in the metal bin and had a “””thought”””, unfortunately the thought went no further. ****** my stupidity lol

Seems a bit sensible to me 🙂 Surely they (goverment) would rather pay somebody to destroy them, than sell them to make some money back 🙂

ha ha true. you can tell i dont work for the goverment lol. although i did spend 3 years at Lyneham as a painter and finisher and spent my days (working permanant nights) in the haunted C2 hanger. i`ll post some pics soon but only of the hercules and not any ghosts lol

    Are they being scrapped?

nah! they wont be scrapped, they will take all the good bits off the old aircraft and keep them, then put all the bads bits together from other aircraft so that they can fly. then they will sell them on to some 3rd world country. probably!!!!

i have the A5 going past a few miles and i have a good view of both road and air traffic. most of the civvi and military stuff goes the way the traffic goes, ie driving on the left. the american military stuff goes where it likes lol
