The roads to and from GLA are in a constant state of being dug up.MADNESS!
Why should folk on the east coast of Scotland have to pass
a perfectly capable airport in Edinburgh to travel to GLA
anyway.? When one looks at the situation sensibly it would
appear east Scotland is paying a surface travel premium to actually bankroll an economy to the detriment of their own.
Use it or lose it? Donal Dowds is on record stating that using an airport gives the impression you like it.
Preaching to the converted?
Folk who are fearful of losing EDI through monopolistic
social engineering will use EDI no matter what… :p :p
Just goes to show that U.S. airlines aren’t as bad as everyone thinks. 😉 Most of them just aren’t nearly as good as SQ, EK, VS, CX, etc.
Its easy for EK to use oil money and cherry-pick far east
connections from established airlines…. would they
succeed as gamekeepers rather than poachers.? 😮
Remember EK has a very small domestic market and they
rely on poaching connecting services from countries that
have bigger domestic markets… 😡
[QUOTE=RIPConcorde]Very well done to CO for beating off stiff competition from EK and SQ etc. (I presume) Of course it is all down to them showing such initiative and launching EWR-EDI! 😉
Emirates of course had their head in the sand when they
overlooked Scotland’s most convenient/accessible/profitable airport at EDI for one on the edge of nowhere. 😀 😀 😀
BAA’s airports should be allowed to compete instead of being in the same cozy – for BAA – bed together.. :p :p :p
It is strongly believed by a cargo pilot ‘in-the-know’ that if EDI got a runway extension all those lovely 747Fs that PIK gets would shoot over to EDI.
Of course they would..EDI is strategically placed on the
Scottish road/rail network..in fact BAA themselves have described EDinburgh’s geographical convenience in glowing
terms…
Did you know that BAA inform airlines that central Edinburgh is only one hours drive from GLA?
Donal Dowds himself described motorway access to GLA as poor…
Who’s kidding who.?
Anyone who can leave Edinburgh’s east end on the hour
and arrive at GLA the following hour has a death wish…
777’s on shuttle routes? 😮 what’s that in aid of? any chance of them operating the lunchtime shuttle to Heathrow next Wednesday? A319’s are nice, but a 777 to sample would be better. 😉
I think you may find that 767s do operate the odd shuttle.
777s? During this years Edinburgh Festival maybe.?
Damn right.
Bring in a rich hot shot who believes in EDI as I and many many more do.
EDI could quickly rival GLA!
Rumours suggest that a group of Glasgow Businessmen might be making a bid for GLA…. disenchanted with the
lack of business flights no doubt?
If successful BAA would have to concentrate their efforts
solely on EDI/ABZ – the latter might be taken over by HIAL.
Which means BAA would be left with an European airport
of their own making…a poison chalice.?
Ah, finaly someone talking sense!
Thank you silver snapper. Thats exactly what I’ve been trying to put across for ages.
As I keep saying; If EDI had the investment, it would have the terminal space and runway lenght required for regular Long Haul travel.
That woould mean some of the flights currently operating out of GLA WOULD shift to EDI as that is the ulitmate destination for many a tourist. If this were to happen, it would probably work out that GLA and EDI have more or less equal ammounts of direct Long Haul routes.
Let’s get something clear here..BAA do not want long-haul
aircraft operating from EDI… their rhetoric alone betrays
their categorisation policy.” Each incoming EDI MD releases
an almost identical introductory speech..”No more big jets
in Edinburgh Skies”..”European” etc..etc..
Of course Edinburgh is the ultimate Tourist and business destination, a new owner would exploit this fully and
provide facities to attract a mix of routes rather than
those allocated presently.
Ask yourself why BAA have discounts available at GLA that are not available at EDI.?
I am not knocking Glasgow here BTW..
I am knocking a monopoly airport owner who has two cities virtually at one anothers throats with the kid glove
treatment at one airport and the boxing glove treatment at the other.. 😡 😡 😡
(although EDI desperately needs it’s Orlando charter back! 😉 )
That EAL 747 was FULL, FULL, FULL….unfortunatelty it
caused severe congestion in the terminal and on the
ramp. 😮
EDI needs new owners to compete for this market…
Also, EDI-YYZ on TCX
This flight highlights the dearth of long-haul aircraft based
at EDI…..hence the dearth of long-haul charters.
Thomas Cook actually position the EDI-YYZ flight from and
back to BHX. All this dead-legging and they still want to fly EDI…
Time Monarch or Thomas Cook based a long-haul aircraft at EDI? Would they be encouraged by the airport owners.?
For NCL.
Domestic=Exeter (flybe)
European=Oslo (Easyjet)
Long Haul=Sharm-el-Sheik (Britannia)
That Britannia route could well be on the cards!
I will cross the border for that one…
Unless 😮 ..naw no chance… 😡
CO is going to be the EDI v GLA battle of the century! 😀
Anyway, enough of that!
Much of CO’s EDI July programme is SOLD OUT… 😀 😀
I have quite a few things to say in reply to that! 😡
But as you said I can’t be bothered starting E v G and this isn’t the thread for it either. 🙂
There is a hardcore of spotters who actually believe that
airlines fly long-haul from GLA because the demand is
local…
It never occurs to them that monopoly airport owner BAA have deemed it so… their HQ is based there for christ sake!
Why? even GLA’s annual profit is suffering because BAA are spending so much shareholders money propping-up
their supposedly popular long-haul airport on the edge of
the mainland.
EDI’s profit is BAA’s top Scottish performer..how long before the shareholders demand the heads of the GLA-based BAA Scottish Airports PLC board.?
The board got off lightly with their PIK sell-off blunder, have BAA shareholders such short memories or are they wearing the obligatory GLAsses.?
3. Doha (Qatar)
As much as I agree with this one, I doubt it will ever happen, certainly not under BAA ownership, they are hardly likely to compromise Emirates at GLA… or break
the long haul monopoly they have bestowed on that
airport on the edge of the Scottish mainland.. 😡 😡
I have more faith in Livingston winning the Scottish
league title next year and BBC Scotland moving its
studios to Edinburgh… 😀 😀
Just about all the major UK charter airlines are now operating a route or two out of EDI this year, even Excel! 🙂
However, Monarch is the only one with an aircraft based at EDI and is the dominating charter airlines at EDI this summer.
BAA does not have the facilities or hangar space at EDI for
major aircraft basing..hence the reason why BAA sent tour operators and their airlines elsewhere from day one…
Another reason why EDI does not have regular long-haul charter, is the fact that aircraft are based elsewhere. Not EDI’s fault, nor the pax, they have no choice.. 😡
It’s interesting that only Monarch and My Travel fly out of EDI, but those two plus Thomas Cook, and Air 2000 as well as Britannia fly out of GLA?
The latter three currently flying out of EDI are ‘Scotch Mist’? 😀 😀 😀
Enough of this nonsense…back to aviation? 😎
