1966 cooper ‘S’. California car, absolutly bog standard untouched $500.00…………Rushed into hospital with burst appendix car was gone when I got out………………………..Sigh………..
Is this the DVD version of the Haynes Manual? I have the book and thought it a very good read for the money.
A retired dentist I see, so used to working in small spaces!! you should see his buddy the retired gynoclogist’s work………………………
The Griffon was well developed by then it would have taken the merlins place with ease, The griffon was put on the backburner so to speak because of the urgency to improve the Merlin already in service. So if the Merlin wasn’t there the Griffon would have got the early development it deserved.
Valve seat damage from unleaded petrol is mostly a problem of High RPM cruise. when used at fluctuating rpm and low RPM it really isn’t an issue. And I should look this up 1st but I would imagine that a Merlin has hardened seats anyway being steel in aluminium heads??
Here in Califronia there is an often quoted rumor of Ford DOHC V8’s being used for agricultural wind machines for keeping the frost off the almighty grape!! I havn’t found one yet though……………………….
To go one further what about the P40 with Merlin or Griffon?? it would seem the logical thing with out the Stang……………….
My local airports newest flyer……………..
A Hair under 5 million is what there asking!! Cheap if you ask me but then I don’t have the dosh or the sphere’s to fly it anyway!!
Supermarine Spiteful. it can’t have been that bad could it……………….
I’ve seen this plane hanging from the roof a number of times when I go to Osh for the EAA show and it is one strange looking bird!! to me it looks like one mans fantasy, It sure doesn’t look like it would fly……………
I don`t know, but probably not. The output of the H Merlin is quoted as 3500 to 4000 hp, which is realistic for Merlin cylinders, 6500hp would be equivalent to a Merlin rated at 3250hp. The highest rating ever actually acheived reliably on the test-beds was around 2600. Do you have any more info on this 100H24?
Pete
Yes it was indeed the Merlin H I was refering to here’s a scan of the cutaway…………….
Rover got the Meteor Engine as part of a deal for Rolls-Royce to take over the whittle project jet’s as the air ministry thought Royces would be better equiped to deal with the new aircraft turbine’s as they were already in the aircraft business. and rover were struggling to get the results that were expected from the new jet’s……..
And I eMailed him about the engines but got no reply…………………………
For those interested in the inner workings of old aero engines I can highly recomend the large book of sectioned Drawings put out by the Roll-Royce Heritage trust by Lyndon Jones, it contains details of gear set’s and those Quill shafts!!! I got my copy through the aformentioned Rolls-Royce heritage trust.
Until you take a look at these drawings you will never understand just how amazing these Engines are, did you know they made a 24 cylinder Merlin? now there’s complicated wee beastie!! Or the Kestral with sleeve valves………………..
I’ve been following this thread with great interest, I have no personal view one way or T’other regarding the aircraft recovery but I do think the remains should be recovered and given a proper burial, but the thing that really seems interesting is that the aircraft and remains seem to be treated as one? surely the bodies would be easy to recover and leave the wreck’s down there? or are the body recovery secondary to the aircraft?
Here’s one I finished earlier……………….
Sorry I know it’s not an aircraft but it goes like one!!
Funny I restore old Jags for a living too! but there’s a ton of ’em ‘ere in California…………..
