I am not completely sure whether the Hind landed or just flew away. Landed is plausible but the video doesn’t seem to show it.

In either case you have to admire the bravery of the second helicopter for immediately returning to the fight. You can see it firing its cannon at the 2:00 mark.

I don’t think so. Iraqi government obviously likes second rate crap. I have no other explanation for ordering MiG-29 when Sukhois were available. There is not a single international customer satisfied with after sales support for their MiG. And no support structure or expertise in the country to give the MiG-29 considerable advantages in that field. What makes the Iraqis think they are a special case ? In the end a great job from the Iraqi government. Supplementing a lemon with a lemon.

How do you know that Iraq has ordered the MiG-29 over Sukhoi? It’s just been spoken about in a few media sources but nothing concrete yet. For all we know they may have ordered both. Iraqi air force is been rebuilt from scratch so there is no aircraft that they could buy that would be a considerable advantage in the field.

Anyway does Iraqi really need a Heavy fighter right now like the Flanker. It would be nice in the future to counter the few eagle operators in the region but right now Iraq’s biggest threat is terrors groups in its own borders.

Mockup of the pod we saw on the MiG-29M.

Is there any more news on this Pod? Is being aimed at the Russian Air Force or is it meant to be for export? Any idea when its meant to enter service?

Russian Air Force to Receive 16 New MiG Fighters

    http://en.ria.ru/military_news/20140415/189237858/Russian-Air-Force-to-Receive-16-New-MiG-Fighters.html

I’m wondering if these MiG-29s will really be SMTs or will true out to be MiG-29M,

Also interesting new about the projected 100 MiG-35 order after 2016. I guess now we know why MiG is planning to up its production rate.

Its going to be nice to see how the MiG-35 will differ from the current model as its now being designed to meant RuAF requirements

Here is a video to compare it too. MiG-29 Strafing run at 0:20

I’ve heard people say that the reason the muzzle flush looks a bit off is because the footage has been stabilised using software. Giving it a weird effect

Islamic Front cameraman films strafing MiG-29. Awesome footage.

Awesome indeed. I was about to post that too. Not something you see everyday. This video seem to be making the rounds.

The timing does seem awfully convenient for the Turkish government, i.e. as a distraction from recent domestic issues.

Was thinking the same thing. Also it looks like the rebel have been using Turkey as a safe haven to launch attacks into Syria. As this new northern offensive seems to show.

The second mig should’ve stayed and fight. not surprised it got shot down in the end though.
Syria needs to seriously reconsider where it buys its next aircraft

The MiG-23BN that was shot down is a ground-attack variant and in all likelihood wasn’t armed with any AA weapons. If it was at best would of been carrying the R-60. The MiG-23BN have their radar replaced with PrNK Sokol-23 ground attack sight system so it doesn’t have any BVR capacity. It wouldn’t of been a match for a F-16.

Even with the Syrian air force’s recent use of MiG-29 in CAS role they only seem to be armed with air to ground weapons probably to extend their endurance.

Like everyone has been staying, it was not MiG-29 but a MiG-23.

Most likely it was this plane filmed that day attack rebel position near the border.

Also I wouldn’t be surprise if the reports by turkey warning the pilot are BS. Probably just wait till it got close to Turkish airspace and then shoot it down.

By the way here is the interview with the MiG-23 pilot.

“MIC”: There is any clarity in the signing of the contract between the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the Russian Aircraft Corporation “MiG” for the supply of MiG-35s?

    – MiG-35s created JSC “RAC” MiG “in the action development work on the tactical and technical requirements issued by the Russian Ministry of Defense. But, as you know, before the end of the development and testing of the plane, its purchase is not possible. I can only say that approximately purchases will be possible from 2016.

So does this mean that MiG is still working on developing the MiG-35 to meet the requirements the RuAF has set out? Does this mean we’ll see a new prototype aircraft? Any one have any ideas in what ways it will be different from from the current prototypes?

“MIC”: You said that you replace the MiG-31 will come a new interceptor aircraft that the Air Force expect to receive in 2020. It will be created on the basis of prospective aviation complex tactical aircraft (PAK FA) or is it a fundamentally different project? What scientific organizations are developing it?

    – With the 2013th in aircraft parts will be supplied multi-purpose fighter Su-35s. The complex aircraft weapons and tactical and technical information about aircraft allow it to meet the challenges of intercepting long-range air targets. Modern long-range missiles “air-air” Su-35s will be equipped by 2015.

Subject to the removal from service aircraft such as the MiG-31 in the next decade due to the expiration of the service life of a promising new aviation systems of Su-35S and PAK FA in the required amount will be purchased and will provide the solution of problems of the Air Force air defense.

Along with the enterprises of JSC “United Aircraft Corporation” in the creation of new aviation systems of air interception include enterprises of JSC “Corporation” Tactical Missiles “.

So the new interceptor is something that will be developed later down the line, with the Su-35 and Pak-fa filling in the role temporarily.

We also know that some things have been developed and produced though yet to be installed, like the new canopy.

Wait hasn’t the new canopy been in use since the second T-50 prototype?

Would be good to see them buy both, get the MiG-35 as a short range multi-role fighter and Su-30 as a long-strike/interceptor. Though either would be good choice.

Also would like to add this to the thread.

This picture was posted a while ago that seems to show a flanker model in the background.
