China’s Super-7 new-generation fighter aircraft is expected to make its maiden test flight later this year, a senior engineer with the China Aviation Industry Corp I (AVIC I) said yesterday in Beijing.
A prototype of the “all-weather, multipurpose fighter jet” has just been completed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Group, a branch of the Beijing-based AVIC I in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, said Gao Zhicong.
Gao, who is in charge of the project, said the new model represents China’s most sophisticated light fighter for the 21st- century combat environment.
China independently designed and built the fighter, Gao said.
The single-seat, turbofan engine-powered fighter will go into volume production once tests have been successfully carried out, he said.
“The Super-7 aims to gradually replace the F-7, MiG-21 and Q-5 series aircraft that are currently in service in both China and some developing countries,” he told China Daily in an exclusive interview.
A model of the military aircraft, which is also codenamed the Super-7/FC-1, debuted at an airshow in Zhuhai in South China’s Guangdong Province last year. It attracted keen interest from many visitors, according to Luo Ronghuai, president of the Chengdu aircraft manufacturer.
Both Luo and Gao declined to specify either the potential importing nations or the price.
Compared with the F-7, Q-5 and other fighter aircraft series currently in use in China, the Super-7 features a larger weapon- load capacity and a greater radar-detection range and it is stealth- capable, Gao said.
Its maximum external storage weight is 3.8 tons, and it boasts a radar-detection range of up to 100 kilometres, compared with the current jets’ 30 kilometres, he said.
“The Super-7 is capable of carrying out the dual mission of air- to-air and air-to-surface attacks,” Gao said.
The cost-effective aircraft can be used as a fighter or a trainer, he said.

The FC-1 ‘s architecture, while not revolutionary does show interesting features which hold the promise of making it a very attractive aircraft from the cost/effectiveness point of view. In addition (this being an important point for several former operators of Russian and Chinese combat aircraft), the FC-1 is based on technologies, that while modern are still within the grasp of such countries in terms of simple support infrastructure and maintenance requirements.
To enhance the manoeuvrability of the FC-1, the mid-mounted delta wing is moderately blended with the fuselage side-mounted air intakes through small LEXs (Leading Edge extensions) to generate vortex lift over the inner wing at the higher angles of attack (AoA). The wide LEX fairings continue along the entire fuselage sides to end up in the two flat splitter airbrakes (similar to the F-16’s), furthermore providing volume for flight control actuators and other systems. Two ventral fins, to the rear and along the side of the fairings, supplement the high and large-surface vertical tail in controlling the aircraft at high AoA and preventing dangerous departure from controlled flight. The fins are positioned in line with the all-moving horizontal tailplanes, their inner endplate effect surely enhancing the longitudinal control authority in pitch. No in-flight refuelling probe is provided at this stage, but the design is known to include provisions for its quick installation in the future.
The avionics suite has not yet been announced, but at least for the THUNDERs it will certainly be of Western origin. Various mock-ups and drawings of the cockpit show a wide-angle 25° HUD, two MFDs and possibly HOTAS controls, while the nav/attack system will be based on a inertial platform with embedded GPS. The fire control system will be based on a multimode radar, and a number of candidates are being considered. The most likely choice, at least for the PAF would seem to be a further expanded-capabilities variant of the Italian FIAR GRIFO, which is installed in the PAF F-7s and which is locally produced under licence. The PLAAF FC-Is could rather be equipped with the Israeli IAI Elta EL-2032, and the Russian Phazotron KOPYO-F has also been mentioned.
The aircraft’s armament appears having been already defined.The main air-to-air weapon will be the new Chinese SD-10 BVR missile with active radar homing guidance, this being supplemented by PL-9 IR-guided AAMs for short-range dogfight. Official mention has also been made of anti-ship and anti-radiation missiles, as well as “dumb” and guided bombs, runways penetration bombs and cluster bombs. The armament is carried on seven external store stations; the wingtips are reserved for short-range AAMs, while the underfuselage position is also capable to accept a podded GSh-23 twin-barrel cannon.

SD-10 has nothing to do with Project 129 which is copy
Russian R-77 system. SD-10 tech is more derived from
AMR-1 project. This was told to Richard Fisher in Chinese Airshow.
There is no current data about FC-1 from CAC about sustain turn
rates, instantaneous turn rates, climb rate, Acceleration etc.
