yes indeed the Fulcrum is one of the most beautiful airplanes ever to fly. Would love to see it continue on for a couple more decades and not just in the IAF, but in other Air Forces too. the MiG-35 does offer a lot of capabilities for a decent price and there might be some customers still who might be able to purchase a few dozen of these..

why is anyone even responding to a troll like Maskirovka ? He doesn’t even post on Keypubs except to write trash about the LCA and India. His general posting pattern is so obvious that its not worth wasting any time or effort convincing him about anything because he doesn’t want to be convinced. He simply wants to troll. Let him, and let the mods decide whether its ok or not.

Its “Rafale” not “Rafael”. Rafael is the name of an Israeli company.

The debut flight of LSP-4 is excellent news (of course, totally unreported by ToI and Indian Express. Beacons of selective journalism).

What was even more pleasantly surprising was the satisfaction reflected by Barbora, coming a few weeks after ACM Naik said he was “disappointed” by Tejas in a TV interview. If I’m not mistaken, Barbora is the senior most IAF officer till date, to have expressed praise for the Tejas.

it was reported by both ToI and IE.

interesting observation about Barbora. it also points out the increasing importance of EAC. previously ACM designates were always with the sword arm, the WAC.

Indeed, and it’s reflected in the statements of AVM Barbora several months ago when he was the one who spoke out about basing Sukhois in the NE..Since then a few NE air bases have been upgraded and are now slated to house MKIs.

more details on LSP-4’s first flight. BTW, this isn’t the first time that they’re heading to Nagpur for the Hot Weather trials of the Tejas..earlier it was PV-3 that went there. Right now it must be piping hot out there in the day, easily 43-45 deg C in the shade..they better head there before monsoon rains come in.

One more thing I’ve noticed is that it seems that they’re grooming AVM Barbora for the top job in the IAF..he’s the official that attended the LCH’s first official flight as well..a very outspoken man who doesn’t balk from speaking his mind.

The fourth limited series production (LSP-4) platform of India’s light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas had its successful first flight at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s military airport in Bangalore on June 2.

The flight, piloted by Group Capt. Suneet Krishna of the National Flight Test Center (NFTC), lasted 40 minutes.[b] The pilot went supersonic and later covered the full flight envelope, exhibiting confidence in the system.[b]

Similar to the April 23 first flight of LSP-3, the LSP-4 also carried the Elta multi-mode radar (MMR) onboard. The LSP-4 aircraft is the 10th test vehicle to join the flight line. Tejas is slated to receive initial operational clearance (IOC) by December, paving way for its induction into the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Vice Chief of IAF Air Marshal P.K. Barbora told AVIATION WEEK that the first flight of LSP-4 is “one step forward” in the project.

“As you move along in a program, you will overcome problems quickly. Now the LSP-5, 6 and 7 will come,” he said. “It’s a proud moment and we are also keenly awaiting the arrival of LCA Mk-II in the years to come, which will be an advanced platform.”

Program Director (Combat Aircraft) and Director, Aeronautics Development Agency (ADA) P.S. Subramanyam told AVIATION WEEK that the project is moving toward IOC.

“The LSP-4 is equipped fully to the standards of IOC. We are left with a few more flight tests and then Tejas would reach the much-awaited target. The Tejas team will now head for hot weather trials (HWT),” Subramanyam said. The HWT is likely to be held at Nagpur.

On Wednesday, the pilot flew the aircraft to an altitude of 11 km. and went supersonic, reaching 1.1 Mach with Test Director Group Capt. D. Chakravorty guiding him from the NFTC telemetry facility. For the first time, Tejas flew in the configuration that will be ultimately delivered to the Indian Air Force (IAF). Group Capt. Suneet flew the LCA prototype vehicle (PV-1) in 2003.

HAL Chairman Ashok Nayak told AVIATION WEEK that the successful flights of LSP-3 and LSP-4 in quick succession are an indication of the accelerated pace at which the program is now being run.

“More aircraft will join the fleet now and the next aircraft (LSP-5) will have all systems of LSP 3 and 4, making it much more advanced. We are on track,” Nayak said.

In addition to the MMR, the LSP-4 had [an] onboard radar warning receiver, [an] electronic countermeasure system (ECM), [and] new avionics software.

“Tejas-LSP-4 is the final configuration of [the] IAF version. Now all the hardware items have come onboard and there won’t be anymore additional systems, barring some software changes,” an ADA source said. “All objectives have been met and all systems worked as per the design. IAF pilots from [the] operational front would soon fly LCA.”

IAF sources said the LCA program’s recent progress has been a huge boost to the force’s confidence in the wake of delays and cost overruns.

“We are all keen to see the Tejas induction. After having waited for so many years, investing so many man hours, review meetings and money, it’s but natural to become anxious. It’s heartening to see the platform is taking definite shape and heading in the right direction,” a senior-ranked IAF official with Air Headquarters said.

And as much as people would like to chastise me it doesn’t change the fact that even the ministry of defence and prime minister thinks that things need to change.

amazing ! the same PM and MoD that you’re talking about are the ones that led the negotiations on the Gorshkov, and the P-8I that you so roundly criticized, calling them incompetent and wanting some people to be fired and what not..this is the same govt. whose MoF basically cancelled the MoD and IAF’s opinion over what refuellers they needed to get.

So please, don’t bank on PM Manmohan Singh’s words as if they are worth pure gold. They’re just as responsible for the mire that Indian PSU’s are in with all the quotas and what not..this is the same PM who wanted the private sector to implement caste based quotas as well.

Well just have to agree to disagree..

Unless you work for the DRDO and have an inside track i do not see how your view/opion is more valid than my view/opinion.

well you don’t back up your opinion. For a start, list out the number of DRDO projects where they’ve produced something “180 degrees” from what they were supposed to produce. You bitch about them non-stop but don’t ever really show anything in concrete terms..just a lot of generalized stuff with no specifics.

A couple more pics of LSP-4. LSP-5 is slated to fly very soon. That will make 3 LCA’s with the MMR hybrid radar.

DRDO and Embraer partnership on providing a platform for the indigenous AEWACS is moving on track. if the last sentence about the IAF looking at acquiring 20 of these indigenous AEWACS is true, its wonderful news.

    NEW DELHI

The joint development of an Airborne Early Warning system by Embraer and India’s Defense Research Development Organization for the Indian Air Force is on track.

The first flight of the modified EMB-145 will take place in December or early next year, Orlando Jose Ferreira Neto, executive vice president for defense systems, told Aerospace DAILY.

The first fuselage was joined for India’s early warning aircraft in March for the first of three EMB-145s to be fitted with the Indian-designed antenna.

The Active Array Antenna Unit (AAAU), developed by DRDO’s Center for Airborne Systems, will then be integrated into the modified EMB-145 aircraft under the agreement, with certification to follow. Deliveries are expected to start in 2011.

While the challenges of integration have been many, “we are trying to mitigate risks,” Neto says. “Talks are on how we shall integrate. It’s a specific product with a specific objective.

“It’s a new system, a new platform. We’ll see what to do with it next because it is a state-of-the-art product — an update of platforms we have been selling,” Neto adds.

Brazil uses the Ericsson Erieye radar on the EMB-99 or EMB-145. Erieye is a long-range pulse Doppler radar, fitted with fixed active phased array antenna. The 9-meter long, 900-kg. antenna unit is mounted on the upper spine of the fuselage and gives the aircraft its distinctive appearance. Rather than a conventional rotodome antenna system, Erieye has a fixed, dual-sided and electronically scanned antenna mounted on top of the fuselage, placing less demand on aircraft size.

Pakistan took delivery of its second Saab-2000 Erieye aircraft in late April. The Indian Air Force is said to be looking at acquiring 20 more systems.
