Does anyone have a link to more on this subject? Can’t find anything in the news on it. nor any mention in any Australian Flight magazines. 🙁
I too think that “Night Fighter” is an excellent book, and is definitely amongst my top five. I still have the copy I bought back in ’65.
My all time favourite though is Samurai, by Saburo Sakai and Martin Caidin.
It’s a tough choice though, as there are so many great books out there. One Mans Window (Dennis Barnham), Fly For Your Life (Stanford Tuck), The First And The Last(Adolf Galland), Thunderbolt (Robert Johnson), The JG26 War Dairies (Donald Caldwell), IJNAF Aces and Fighter Units (Izawa), The First Team (Lundstrom)…. the list goes on and on.
But Samuari fires my imagination like no other. 🙂
Caidin was probably referring to Helmut Wick, the leading LW scorer of the Battle Of Britain. There have been rumours floating around for years that many of Wicks claims were questionable. But as with most things there has never been any proof that this was so. And his contemporarys were adamant that Wick’s claims were no more fictional than any other LW ace. And he was given as desk job, when he took over control of JG2. He continued to fly often though. He was shot down and killed by Flt. Lt. J C Dundas (609 Squad) on 28 November 1940.
Martin Caidin was quite a prolific, exciting aviation writer, but not always strong on historical research.
“Damn it man we have 650 planes!”
“Perhaps now we’ll see what Leigh-Mallory’s Big Wing can do.”
“Muck and filth everywhere Mr. Warrick.
Well the chef’s don’t come on till 6, Sir. “
“Gain height and use it.”
“Well done everybody. For once you deserve it.”
Thanks kindly John! 🙂
I have a soft spot for anything that has a Cross on it. And although both the Fw190 and the Me 110 were full of character (the Fw being a great aircraft) it’s not either of those that has captured my heart.
That belongs to the mighty Me 109 – in any and all its multitude variations. Slim, sleek, wicked climb…. it started the war as being perhaps the best fighter extant, and ended it still able to hold it’s own end up against whatever the Allies could throw against it.
That’s my lady! 🙂
