Thanks, red it is.
Thanks for the info Wieesso, that’s very useful.

He made a brilliant song called ‘My Centurion Dies’ referring to his Cessna 210 going down after an engine failure. Rather morbid but as a pilot I’ve always thought it catches the feelings you would be going through in such a situation perfectly.
Ah, yes they were silver and dayglo I think. I seem to recall there were quite a few of them, and they were all near the first entrance. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the information guys, very interesting.
I have to say though that I’m not convinced about the location – 6 Basing Hill. If you look at the footage, backing on to the garden are semi-detached houses. Looking at Google earth they seem to be mainly detached houses around there, certainly the ones backing on to 6 Basing Hill. Any thoughts?
‘Luck and a Lancaster’ by Harry Yates is a good read including plenty about his time with 75 Sqn at Mepal.
Definately Northolt for the other photos. Images 2 and 3 show the distinctive grass circular feature by the apron. You can see it in the attached photos with the hill in the background.

Wow, that was quick! Thanks James, that explains it really well, I’ve been wondering for a long time exactly how they worked. So, obviously that port upper flap is there in the photo, in fact I agree, I think you faintly can see it. I guess I’d better add it to the painting, that could have been embarressing!
regards, Steve
Does anyone remember the spotters enclosure at Northolt (where the new main gate is now on West End Rd). Would love to see a picture as I cycled ther every day after school in the 70s.
You’re looking east so the Bath Rd is to the left. Great shots.
Thanks very much – I really must try and dig out a copy of that book!
Steve
Brilliant – thanks guys.
Thanks for the replies guys. Cabbage, I’ll look out for the book, could you just confirm to me, does the photo show the port or starboard side of the aircraft?
Many thanks
Steve
