my grandfather served in the RFC during ww1 and was staioned close to some American base. When the war ended, the Americans dug a massive hole in the ground and chucked in all sorts of stuff, including vehicles, are these things still there ? needless to say the brits looked on in absolute bewilderment. The Americans when asked couldnt be bothered to take it all home

If you look at the statistics for the use of the Ju87 against British targets in 1940 they are quite surprising.

As for the legend that they had to be withdrawn from the battle after losses on 16 and 18 August 1940…well….you’ll have to wait for the boo….;)

my dad who was in the army stationed in Kent says they were dive bombed by stukas in November 1940, alway wondered whether he got his plane recognition right

I just can’t understand this – its an outright shame to be defacing/disassembling memorials in the first place – but WHAT is going on over there??

Is the nation THAT bl–dy impoverished that every last spec of metal has to be scrounged to pawn off for a few quid?… or are these the same sh**s that couldn’t care less about the (recyclable) beer tins they toss along the pavement?

    JJ

who knows, you forget one thing they may not have been english (but i wouldnt have put it past some of them) we are awash with other nationalities now

Bet if you found a local newspaper from the time, you’d find you couldn’t. After all, the first gun control act in 1926 was an answer to all the crimes being committed with… yes, war souvenirs. Presumably by men who had done enforced military service as well – see the criers of “Give ’em National Service!” on the Woodhall thread.

Nuremberg in 1932 was probably quite a safe place – perhaps we should take some lessons from there?

    Adrian

i stand corrected, very interesting Mr Gray

Thank you, Hatton – you have managed to put into words what I could not. The inchoate ranting on the Woodhall Spa thread made me almost as mad as the original crime.

As for “It never happened in our day” – like hell! I can’t find the damn thing now I need it, but someone on the Great War Forum posted a newspaper cutting about someone who had made off with the takings from his Poppy collection tin.

    In 1932…

    Adrian

bet you could walk the streets in nottingham at night in 1932 without worrying

Interesting that you imply that you dont think that human rights are important,

let me clartify. human rights are important… to the victims

Jesus. Why do we always have to have all this rubbish spouted? Yes it’s dreadful. Of course it is. But why do the same people bleat on about the ‘scum’ etc., and what they would do to them if they caught them? Let’s face it, you’re not going to catch them. You are not going to lift one bloated cheek off the comfortable chair you sit in to use your PC to do anything about the situation are you? So please, tell me what is the point? If the people who come out these crass, throwaway comments about what they’d do to the perpetrators were confronted with the situation themselves they are the very people who would do NOTHING.

It’s a sad indictment of society that these things still happen. All the false posturing is sad too.

Why can’t we, for once, look at the positives? Remembrance is achieving a far higher profile now that it has for a number of years. More young people are becoming involved. More young people are recognising what it is all about. Why not dwell on that for once?

    Regards,

    kev35

i agree with your points to an extent, i have a 14 year old boy and have met some of his mates and a good bunch they are, but of course you cant tar everyone with the same brush, but as far as spouting off, dont see the harm, you cant get on a soap box in hyde park corner and say these things anymore can you? youd be inciting hatred or whatever they call it

Having read some of the comments that have followed on from my ‘even in Nottingham’ post, I thought I best explain things a bit. I’ve been living in Nottingham the last 18 months, and I have to say it’s a case of the good, the bad and the ugly. On the plus side, just tonight I left a case on a bus in town. It had a laptop and goodness knows what else in it. Miraculously, I’ve got it back intact! My girlfriend left her handbag in a cab a few months ago and that came back intact too. There are certainly some very good people in Nottingham, and very helpful too.

On the minus side, I’ve been shot at with an air rifle and intimidated on the street several times. It’s an unfortunate fact tht Nottingham really does have a problem with undesirable characters, and some very rough areas. I know all places have thier problems, but Nottingham can be rough to the point of bluddy dangerous in quite a few areas.
Anyone fancy a picnic in St.Anne’s? Thought not. 😀

Nottinghamshire, as jeepman says, isn’t a bad place at all in general though. I’m in Derby tomorrow unfortunately, so I won’t be able to make it to Newark. 🙁

interesting to hear things about nottingham ,down south the only news that makes it to us is of course bad, but i cant help feeling that if the government wanted to make the streets safe, without worring about human rights etc they could
