    HUNTINGS AND PERCIVAL

    Trusting to good old fragile memory, the original Hunting Group was comprised of spinoffs from the original company on geographic survey work. I was going to join Hunting Clan Airlines around 1958 as apprentice engine/airframe fitter also working to get PPL, when they went bellyup. This was a separate organisation from the rest of the group, seem to remember they were involved in trooping contracts and had some Vickers Vikings. When I’ve learnt to post an image here, I will look up my negative files.

    Re Percival, I seem to remember (here we go again) spotting at either Panshanger or Stapleford Tawney around mid fifties, which is where the Q6 was based and some Procters, and an impression of production/repair facilities.

    GAFFERS TAPE IS WONDERFUL

    Below is a quote from Kev 35, taken from an earlier thread.

    And a photo of same aircraft in better times, early 1936 at Shaiba.

    G-AAUD was named Hanno and G-AAXE was named Hengist. ‘XE was caught in an airship hangar fire at Karachi on 31/5/37 and was destroyed. ‘UD was impressed into RAF service on the outbreak of war and was destroyed at Whitchurch Bristol Airport on 19/3/40 when during a gale, the aircraft was blown together with another HP42, G-AAXC Heracles. ‘XC was also destroyed as a result of this incident.

    Does’nt that rear fuse repair to join with the forward section look well, that new silver gaffer tape really does the job

    I was informed that it was the owner of Brunton who put paid to the parachute club due to the noise of their aircraft….. I love Chinese Whispers….:rolleyes:

    Incredible, is’nt it, the people and places, in the centre of our little village is the Church, local 17th pub and a row of 3 thatched cottages. The one by the pub has been bought by a guy who hates church bells, the sound of the celler cooler and cars being parked in front of the pub. Another one has been bought by a Londoner for weekends away who also dislikes the bells and the gliders being aerotowed from the local camp as the buzzing noise of the Grob engines is annoying, as we are on the edge on Salisbury plain nobody knows if he has yet experienced a full exercise with the AS90 Howitzers …. here’s hoping!

    Would’nt it be quicker & easier to fit a pair of folding wings, put some gearing on the main gun with a folding blade prop, I saw a caterpiller landing arrangement some years ago – so thats been done ……… maybe not?…. but that nice gentleman Mr H. Robinson seemed so positive.

    Whilst I know not of wot you have been discussing, the following extract from ‘Flying Boats on Windermere’ may help?

    ‘Windermere factory built on eastern side of shore approx 2 miles south of Ambleside, opened 1942 manufacturing Sunderland MkIII, qty 35 built, two batches DP176 – 200 & EJ149 – 158, EJ150 sank U107 and another finished off U387. A few RAF Catalinas and other flying boats came in for repair & maintenance. When factory closed in 1944 it was completely dismantled.
    Everything had to returned to nature as this was the undertaking given when it was built, despite many local people needing the work that could have continued. Extremely unlikely that any debris – sunk or otherwise would have been allowed. The Southampton Sunderland visited Windermere in 1990 on the way to the museum, giving pleasure flights at £4.50.

    UNFORTUNATE

    Hmmmmm – last time I saw one of these it was a Comet 4B tangling with a hanger & two Tridents – ended up with the houchin GPU still connected and running standing in a pool of JP4 from the ruptured tanks. Did’nt do the Tridents much good either with two hanger doors bought down on them. Is there anyone out there with a picture of this – BEA – LHR – Sixties – Maintenance base.

    Hi T/C, nice work! – I am starting to scan pictures and negatives that I took in the 50’s, out of interest I looked through the 3 albums of prints for Procters (these have not been scanned yet) with the following results.

    There may well be more amongst the negs but will take some time before I know, in the meantime I thought that one of these might be of interest. Editing – editing – Memory! – where does it get to – what I meant to say was, if any of these are of interest, as they are small prints (4.5″ x 2.75″) they would be easy to get a copy of, (B & W) of course, colour was not a viable developing option then!.

    LAKE WINDERMERE GLIDER

    In ‘Lakeland Aviation and Airfields of the 20th century’ by Ken Davies – Regional publications, Freshwater, Isle of Wight – see pages 28 & 29 – states that that the experiments with the Falcon glider were a great success and it seems that an idea of using them in clandestine operations started the experiments. Also the glider is still in the Windermere Steamboat Museum along with another exhibit – the oldest working RR aero engine in the world from one of the earliest airships!.

    Would be interested to hear from anyone who has been in there.

    Was’nt the Merlin used as the engine in an American tank during WW2? – I remember talkin to someone who had serviced tankswho claimed this – now dead unfortunately.

    Hi, in the mid 50’s, I went to southend as I remember it – but it could have been stanstead and took photos of the Prentices that had been dumped in the middle of the field plus the remains of the Tudors in the back of the field. I have got one showing G-AKCO complete, the tails of GRJ & GRX (with roundels and fin flash!) and one complete tudor in the colours of LOME AIRWAYS LIMITED – never came across that name before – there may be 1 or 2 more when I sort out the negs, but this is a long term job!!. I seem to remember that BSAA had a fair qty, also Neville Shute’s book/film ‘No Highway’ was based around the Tudor. Have not learnt yet to deal with photos or negs so cannot at present put them on display.
