Why the surprise?
There were loads of Iraqi aircraft that were fitted with French equipment in the 1980s. What about all those MiG-21s with Matra Magic missiles? Or the alleged MiG-23BN with Exocet?
Or to cap it all, Adnan-1, Il-76 equipped with a Thomson radar to create a DIY AWACS. Now that was a cross-pollination that makes any FOXBAT avionics update look tame in comparison::cool:
Not many of them left flying – 2 or so remaining with with Donavia.
Possibly the only Soviet era jetliner I’ve never flown in (except of course Tu-104/Tu-124):(
India is possibly a bigger operator of Russian/Soviet tactical aircraft these days?
Or, at least clocks up a greater number of flying hours – look at the amount of flying done on IAF MiG-29s compared to the RuAF…
twinblade, it doesn’t have service ceiling as high as LCH, apaches had problems simply crossing the mountains in afg (with no load), which are hills compared to where IA and IAF operate. the heavy attack helo’s are meant for the plains, they are simply doing a 1 to 1 replacement of the hinds.
So what do you suggest the Indian military buy instead of the Apache?
Isnt it too risky to carry out fun aerobatics near a mid size civil airliner , what about wake from civil aircraft or similar thing from fighter jet ?
Some more close formation flying:

Saying the Viggen was comparable to the F-4 is laughable. The F-4 was a huge two-seat fighter while the Viggen was a compact single seater. The MiG-23 to Viggen comparison is much more valid and realistic. I cannot fathom how anyone could relegate the F-4 to such a lowly status when it’s still flying today because it’s not irrelevant after some upgrades.
Well, the Viggen had about 80% of the thrust of an F-4E, and had almost the same maximum payload of around 7 tonnes or so (theoretically). The SAAB was a more advanced design than the F-4, I guess. But like swerve said, both the Viggen and Phantom dwarfed the F-5 or the MiG-21
What about the maximum range of both aircraft – comparable, I think…
I guess somebody didn’t do their homework. So much new technology and the plane fails on a basic requirements …
Maybe its over engineered just because technology was there and not use reliable existing stuff ?
Well, Russian have nothing against it :diablo:.
Or maybe the Americans just have different standards…
I’m sure they’ll be flying again in a few days or so?
It looks like a sports car.
I certainly agree – said it already on this forum::D

A Jaguar E-type I’d say, or maybe a Porsche 356 Roadster?
I hadn’t read that thread in over a few hours, but I might have guessed that it was a fake or something (I wouldn’t have thought that Belarus would ever have taken delivery of a “post 1991” system anyway). But hasn’t Belarus supplied S-300 systems and MiG-29s to America before?
So that the Belarusians can sell an example each to the Americans like that TOR M1 missile system every one’s talking about.:diablo:
I think it would be easier to believe in the existence of a secret stealth helicopter, actually – Occam’s razor and all that…
That’s probably what should happen. And the Chinese should not feel to miffed if the Pakistanis don’t hand over any of the wreckage – the Chinese can then be rest-assured that Chinese technology supplied to Pakistan will also never fall into the “wrong hands”.
Some photos I found on a Russian site:

Tony just beat me to it
So, are the Pakistanis going to give the wreckage back to America (the country which bankrolls half of the Pakistani military), or is it off to China with it?
Edit: make that 25% of Pakistani military spending coming from US:
Some more pics of the mistery chopper;
Is that the tail rotor? It seems pretty huge, using the 2 men next to it as a scale measure.
The Viggen for its time was a VERY advanced aircraft, sharing many components with the American F-14 and have been upgraded by Sweden constantly well into the 90s while production only ended in 1990.
Which part of the Viggen shares components with the F-14?
The Viggen is almost in the same weight and power class as the F-4 – only for the more technically capable and well funded air arms….
