    I always thought the original Su-27 uses an analogue FBW system for flight control?:confused:

    What’s all this talk about “rough-field performance”. When was the last time the C-17, An-124 or even the Il-76 ever land in a rough-field strip (whatever that is)? Far more important and vital in recent years would be short-field performance (if we’re going to talk about ‘Kosovo and Afghan type’ scenarios). I dare say the C-2 should be good at that – look at those high-lift devices – along with what seems to be a good thrust-to-weight ratio…

    Well of course, its (North American) main designer for many years was Edgar Schmued – who worked on such classics as the P-51, F-86, F-100. Not bad for a German immigrant.
    Incidently, do you know where I can find some info on the MiG-19 in NVA service? Pilots’ impressions, safety record etc. How did the MiG-19 compare with the F-1000 anyway?

    Saturn patent (Chepkin is one of the inventors) talks of dispencing nano- (word a la mode here) particles between some ‘object’ and enemy radar, various type of particles should dissolve radar waves of various lenght.

    There’s already a name for it – it’s called chaff…

    Somebody must have a crystal ball to calculate how much an aircraft will cost to buy in 10 years time (always a risky business in the aerospace industry, predicting costs).

    No it would probably delay the development timetable and increase costs compared to the eurocanards – I think that’s his point…

    Incidently, do some of you guys actually have a personal interest in the F-35 project – what difference will all these timetable and cost overruns make in 20 years time?:confused:

    Some superb photos of the new Mi-8AMTSH. The projectors are of French origin.

    The pictures of the rescue winch are also impressive, as are the cockpit photos.

    EF went through prototypes, a batch of development & test aircraft, then a full-rate production order.

    If you’re including the first flight of EAP (in 1986) a process which took almost 20 years as well…

    You can’t compare project management solely based on raw dates. I see a difference between a project defined to be finished in 30 years and then indeed finished in 30 years and a project defined to be finished in 15 years but only finished after 23 years..

    I don’t remember how late or how over budget Rolls Royce were with the RB-211 in the 1970s – but they might have avoided both if they stuck to developing V12 piston engines – is that what you are suggesting?

    Just to be on a level playing field, what was the budget of the Rafale program like in comparison to the JSF?

    So far only 93 Rafales have been delivered. Besides which, the F-35 would be a more expensive more advanced specification, or whatever – it’s difficult to compare 2 different programmes…

    Hi Scooter,

    No doubt the F/A-18EF will be cheaper than the PAK FA and it should be unless it is offering qualities better than the PAK FA (overall).

    However out of the MMRCA competition when you consider value for money it is one of the worst aircraft… India has technologies on its Su-30MKI’s that the USN is just about to get with the Ultra Hornet. Apart from an AESA radar it really has not a lot to offer for such a high cost.

    If they sold the IAF the hornet for say $40million a piece it would make sense, but paying the same price or around the same price as a Su-30MKI for even less functionality in other fields other than radar seems fool hardy.

    Are you comparing the cost of a MKI with a Super Hornet, you do realise that the price of Su-30MKI has gone up in recent years – it was reported in the Indian media that the latest batch of MKIs was just under a 100 million USD a piece – how much is an SH?
    Also overall life cycle costs of the F/A-18E could in fact be a lot lower than that of the Su-30MKI, who knows?:confused:

    Wasn’t Rafale A a TD , just like say EAP , Mig 1.44 or X-35? I think Rafale C first flew in 1991 if i’m correct.

    You’re probably right there – sometimes the dividing line between a technology demonstator and a first prototype of a new design can be very narrow. Nevertheless the Rafale project had its own budgeting and scheduling problems – just like everyone elses’ project.
