The supercruise aspect related to the fifth generation engine in the russian fighter is hard to know, Russia is saying they will build a fifth generation engine instead of using a fourth generation ++ engine, weather the T-50 has reached a supercruise of Mach 1.8 is just a matter of expeculation, but at least by comments made by Putin he expressed that in performance and maneouvrability the T-50 surpasses the F-22.

Basically the link says that the previous batch of 40 MKIs ordered in 2007 came to 1.5 billion USD (approx 38 million apiece) while the latest batch of 42 MKIs will cost 4.29 billion (102 million apiece). The deal does include A-to-A and A-to-G weapons as well as French radars (instead of the Bars?).

I take it that’s a Conway with an afterburner? Was the Crusader III the only application for an afterburning RR Conway? Your basically talking about a powerplant with 28,000 pounds of thrust or so, I guess, and no doubt it would put it in the same category as the JT8D that was used to power the SAAB Viggen or the Soloviev D-30 used on the MiG-31 – two very high performance planes.
what’s there to stop such a powerplant being used on the Concorde – in the same way Tu-144 used the NK-144 turbofan? Just an idea.

Have these people actually read anything about the radar system on the Su-30MKI… it’s an amazing piece of kit. I dare say its a more capable radar, overall, than to be found on the Typhoon or Rafale.
If you clowns want to be even remotely believable, try proving the Russian AF brass wrong by doing a component-by-component analysis of the systems onboard the Su-27SM (which no one here seems to know about, at all) and those of the Su-30MKI… Radar (have fun, the details are classified), RWR, ECM, engines, etc.
You shouldn’t forget that Russia STILL adopts the Soviet policy of never exporting more advanced fighters than those back home.
If you don’t know the capabilities of the radar on the 27SM why should you think it’s any better than the radar on the MKI. I think the radar on the Su-27SM is the old original N001 set of the Su-27S with the antenna retained but a new processor installed – it might bring the radar up to F/A-18C standard – APG-65 or even APG-73 perhaps.
The reason the Russians haven’t exported the latest avionics on the MKI is because the IAF didn’t select any…
BTW there are 200 Flankers in the IAF with thrust vectoring – how many aircraft have the same in the russian AF?
Yes Sens, I know that, that is what the modernisation of the MiG-31 into a MiG-31BM is all about. The original processor pack on the Zaslon is being replaced – the original PESA antenna remains the same. The upgraded radar system will then be called “Zaslon-AM. But there is still only 8 or so BMs flying at the moment.

Anyway, the Su-30MKI and MKA really, as would seem on the surface, have superiority in radar – nothing else.
Unfortunately, we know next to NOTHING about the real magnitude of upgrade that the N-001 got. So the RuAF brass well be right 😉

You’d wonder why the pilot didn’t eject, he must have known from an early stage that he was in trouble – he was probably lost and running out of fuel.
His ejection seat probably wasn’t even functioning.
The only way the Su-27SM could be superior to MKI is in Thrust-to-weight ratio – despite being about 1500kg heavier than a bog-standard Su-27S, the MKI still has AL-31 with a similar power rating.

The entire AWG-9 radar set weighed in at something like 540 kg if I recall right.
The MiG-31’s Zaslon weights in at a whopping 950kg or so (almost a ton)!:eek:
When you consider that both radars have similar capabilities and the AWG-9 is actually sixties technology, a good decade older than the Zaslon.
I never said the Russians were doing crazy things – just that they may have different standards to the Americans, there’s nothing wrong with having different standards from one country to another…
Or maybe it just shows that the two countries have different standards in safety (hint: Sukhoi have already lost a Su-35 in testing).
