    Again, this has to do with the MiG-25/31s operating environment, which routinely go above 65k feet. I don’t think anyone understands the importance of this;
    Air density is
    1,225 kg/m3 at sea level.
    0,414 kg/m3 at 10000 meters (32808 feet)
    0,088 kg/m3 at 20000 meters (65616 feet)

But both the MiG-25 or the MiG-31 had almost no targets to shoot down at that altitude, the MiG-31 itself was essentially developed to shoot down cruise missiles flying at subsonic speeds at very low altitudes.

I imagine the main reason we don’t see the MiG-31 very often with R-27 is because there were probably not enough R-27 to go around for the MiG-29 and Su-27 it was developed for – it was only introduced into service around 1986 if I recall. The R-40 on the other hand had already been in production for the previous 15 years or more and was probably running out of MiG-25s to be carried on.

This previous combat record has very little relevance to today’s capabilities.

    That’s true.

F-16C vs MiG-29M/SMT… we simply don’t know until it happens.

But which F-16C – Block 60 with AESA radar?
Also what weaponry would your SMT or UPG be carrying? Do MiG-29 varients carry anything compared to AIM-120C-7 or AIM-9X?

    Yes.

    Thanks for that.
It’s funny, but after making that post about Iraqi Mi-35 ATGMs, within a few hours or so, 3 threads have provided the photos and videos I said I couldn’t find.

With current development in Iraq with ISIS’s attack, Iraq will finally be freed from US slavery so it will not need to buy junk F-16IQ for almost 150m$ apiece while it can get 2 Su-35, or even 3 Mig-35 for this money

Alos Iraq will be free not to buy AT-6C for almost 30 mil$ apiece while it can get 2 Yak-130

Also it is clear that Abrams will be sent home and replaced with brand new T-90S

A single Su-35 is certainly not cheaper than an F-16, I’d say the MiG-35 isn’t much cheaper either.

Do Iraqi AF have Igla-V missiles for their Mi-35M helicopters?

Very unlikely. There was hardly any aerial threat to Iraqi helicopters to begin with.

The question is, do Iraqi Mi-35s actually carry any guided missiles, ATGMs such as Ataka or Shturm.
I have never seen any pictures of Iraqi Hinds carrying such weapons?

Here is a question. When they were testing the R-40 missile in the 1960s, what was the fastest target the missile was trialed against and successfully downed?
Bearing in mind the R-40 missile was developed to shoot down a target which cruises at a speed at mach 3.0+, does the air-to-air missile actually have the proven ability to do so?

Datapoint on the 117 Engine for PAK-FA

So we should regard the present 117 engine as the standard powerplant? The T-50 will have essentially the same engine, or a variant, as the Su35S? So the Type 30 is for the very distant future?

Umm, nobody (except perhaps JSR) is suggesting that other nations can’t match Russia in ramjet AAM development. The point was that suspending this particular program is unlikely to have long-term ramifications given Russia’s ongoing experience with the underlying technologies.

That’s a fair assessment. I wasn’t trying to say the NO36 radar on T-50 had any blue-ärsed flies buzzing around it either or anything…
Although suspending the development of ones ramjet AAM will certainly put you behind the competition’s ramjet AAM effort, looking at it from any logical standpoint.

So by others you meant all western countries combined. So in other words as Rii said.

Also Navajo was never in service.

The USA has developed and put into service almost half a dozen airborne AESA radars on various aircraft – and Russia how many?
What does this tell us about the AESA radar on the Sukhoi T-50?

All airbases within Iskander range. Best way to neutralise air power – prevent it from taking off and landing.

    Iskander with nuclear warheads?

    BS, iraqi losses are very clear after their release of their records in 2003;

That is correct. But they only provide a record of Iraqi air force losses. So when you say that:

Real world results? Belonging to similarly equipped infrastructures, F-4E+AIM-7 combination met MiG-25P+R-40 combination. In each encounter (4 that I know of), F-4Es consistently got shot down, MiG-25P remained untouched.

You don’t know how many F-4 were shot down until the Iranians provide their records. You also don’t know if any F-4s shot down were even armed with AIM-7 (F-4 is also a strike aircraft).

You have to make the distinction as to what type of targets are being attacked – R-40 was designed to shoot down bombers – and no doubt that is what it has been mainly successful at shooting down (the F/A-18 shot down in Desert Storm was a bomber).

Dont bother a long detailed response, before digesting the fact MiG-25 belongs to same generation as F-4, which it consistently defeated, not F-15.

No. The MiG-25P entered service barely a year or 2 before the F-14, and about 3 years before the F-15. The MiG entered serve almost 12 years after the F-4.

It was much cheaper to build and operate when compared to SR-71, yet just as survivable.

The MiG-25R was not as ‘survivable as an SR-71, not even close.

MiG-25 wouldnt be flown right if it was downed by a Hawk,
in those days, the brunt of US nukes were still bombs,
bombs will remain the cheapest weapon until the delivery platform becomes too expensive,
B-70 with nuclear bombs were still considered cheaper than ICBM

It was some sort of specially adapted I-Hawk. In fact the MiG-25R wasn’t completely destroyed by the SAM and to be finished of by an F-15 (or so the story goes).

in those days, the brunt of US nukes were still bombs,

    In the 1970s?

I never said the MiG-25RB was pointless, far from it the RB made a lot of sense as a fast reconnaisance platform. But it is a very expensive aircraft, to build and maintain in service. It all depends what countries and their air forces are willing to pay for.

BTW, wasn’t there a MiG-25R that was shot down by an Israeli Hawk missile?

As a single MiG-25, most definately not; but it provides unique capabilites that MiG-23 and MiG-21 couldnt provide. Depending on circumstances, a single MiG-25 could chase and kill a supersonic bomber when a hundred MiG-23s can’t. This is important when that bomber could be armed with a dozen nuclear tipped cruise missiles.

And the American ICBMs? How was the MiG-25 going to shoot those down?

When you compare the Mig 25RB & Sr71 cost/impunity ratio, I think there’s no contest.

Pointless comparison. You could also compare the Mirage F1CR & MiG-25RB cost/impunity ratio and then draw your own conclusions.

Although it doe raise the question, was a single MiG-25 a more cost effective aircraft for air defence, compared to say, 2 MiG-23 or 4 MiG-21?
