I’ve always liked the F11F – it just looks right.

The same way the F106 does, the Hunter, Draken.. classic lines.

From what I’ve read – the F11F never realised its true potential, which is a real shame. Beautiful aircraft.

    Beak!

Ah they’ve gotten to you. Clearly the “Beak” is a downward swept winglet similar to that of the XB-70 Valkyrie 😛

Perhaps it’s clearer in this undated photo:

It’s merely the perspective that makes it look like a beak to the untrained eye.

Oh god, I can’t keep this up..

In truth I reckon it’s a black duck, or something similar:

    Wings far back, long neck

All I could see was a bird until I looked at the picture long enough that my eyes glazed up and began to see what the ufologists *want* to see.

So yes, it’s a bird and I have no anonymous sources. I guess it could be a rather pimped up seawind – in which case I want it 🙂

    Cheers for the replies folks.

I’m more or less resigned to not finding out what it was they saw.

30+ years haven’t helped the memories and they’re not aviation buffs to begin with 🙂

RE: The Aer Lingus Viscount coming down off Tuskar Rock; certain people always seem to veer towards the mysterious conspiratorial explanation. They get a perverse pleasure off it I think.

    Bleh.

    Anyway thanks again.

They’re both saying that it wasn’t that particular drone.

I hadn’t even considered looking into drones so thanks for suggesting it.

Anyway, just asked about the speed, and they both said extremely quick and still climbing.

It all points to a missile, but I haven’t been able to dig up anything that fits the bill. Again, this is just 30+ year old memories, so it’s most probably not exact, so I’ll probably never find anything that’s 100% spot on.

    Thanks for the replies.

 I thought India and Brazil are co-funding the program ? Indian economy is relative unscathed in the current crisis.

If its not a full-stealth aircraft then IAF may opt for F -35 which would be in production by the time PAK FA is supposed to roll out.

Congratulations on your use of the rolly eye smiley, something which is wholly condusive to balanced and reasoned discussion.

As regards Brazil, I read they were in the project a while back, but recently I read that this was no longer the case. Does anyone have the official word on this?

Anyway, as I said, Russian ingenuity and design expertise is not to be questioned. My only reservation, and that is not the same as having huge doubts, centres on whether or not they can mass produce a 5th generation fighter.

Time is going to prove that one way or another.

You guys are clearly underrating the su-27, i would love to see the Superbug doing 1700 km/h in a 1000km circuit…i bet even the f-22 can’t do it..but of course only in gossips and tales..i hope it will be a stealthy su-27, that should do the job..

Perhaps better would be to start a new development for a better design…the f-22 is becoming more and more in a f-104 program, just a bunch of aircrafts in a pre-operational service…that will be scrapped at the end, better to start with something else, something better, yes LM and Boeing wont like it, but better resolve the problem while you only have 120 airframes…

The Su-27 is a stunning aircraft, and I’m not underrating it. If they could keep that airframes performance levels and reduce its RCS to near F-22 levels, only an idiot would regard that as anything other than a triumph of engineering.

As regards whether or not the US should start with a clean slate rather than upgrade the F-22, I’m nowhere near being able to make a qualified judgement on that. I wouldn’t fancy being the one trying to sell that idea to the next US administration though…

I’m guessing it’ll be something like a Flanker with supercruise and some RCS reduction along the lines of the Super Hornet. I doubt it’ll be a full-blown stealth aircraft like the F-22 or F-35. More because of cost than ability.

My thinking is along the same lines. I don’t doubt for a second that Russia has the ability to create a full-blown stealth aircraft, but I have reservations about their ability to mass produce such an aircraft, due to the cost.

Having said that, there’s always more than one way to tackle a problem, and I would not be overly surprised if they find a cost effective solution.

I think if I was involved in the F-22, or 35 program, or a “fanboy”, I’d be hoping that the PAK-FA proved to be a genuine 5th gen fighter – because the implications would be huge, especially if Russia was prepared to export it to whoever was prepared to pay for it.

Such a scenario would I feel, lead inevitably to a further large order from the USAF for the Raptor and perhaps lead to an easing in the export restrictions. Both good if you’re involved in the program.

The Hunters can be a very effective weapon in the counter insurgency role, as demonstrated by the Rhodesian Bush war.

On this, I’ve wondered for some time, whether it would be worthwhile for a company to buy the rights to a classic airframe, like the Hunter, or A-4 and produce newbuild examples.

The emphasis being on delivering a proven, mature airframe, that’s relatively easy to maintain.

Would the potential market be too small to justify something along these lines?
