Although the main subject is the Vampire the Meteor is trailing a towed target of some sort and as the TT20 didn’t enter service until 1957 this DeHavilland official photograph is dated Feb 1955 what mark is the Meteor and what is the target?
617 Sq B1’s XH498,499,502
How about the little known tail dragger version? Didn’t catch on as the crew ladder was too long
A sextant can be used in fixed upward position, Transport Command had them on Britannias, and although I’m not fully sure on this, I think they were fitted into a receiver slot in the cabin roof. Anyone confirm?
Periscope sextants are fitted to many aircraft types from the Brittania, as mentioned, through the V force types, some Canberras, Nimrod, Hastings T5, etc, etc. 360 degree vision horizontally and unlimited upper vision, assuming you’re above cloud of course!!
Upward facing cine camera for weapon release trials, the same mod was done on another airframe at Boscombe down in the early 70’s for Martel trials.
Interesing shots again Scorpian, it was very sad seeing the SC.9 being scrapped at Mawgan. Is the silver nose in the dump, the one that’s now a preserved nose section?
The nose is from XH177 which had an accident in the late 60’s at Luqa which resulted in it being grounded and spares recovered, it was then used by the fire crews as a rescue trainer, it then went to A&AEE for micro detination cord trials before being scrapped ending up with Hanningfield Metals.
This the one you’re after?
More Vampires
More PR9’s
Could it be a slow flypast or go-around?
No it couldnt, commited way before that point.
Excellent shots there Scorpian, from my favourite RAF period. Any info on the PR.9 that has taken the barrier? The interesting thing is there appears to be another PR.9 behind it.
That’s the other tip tank.
The pilots canopy came off during take off which resulted in an aborted take off and over run through the barrier.
