Another Whovian coming out of the closet. 😎

Are we all looking forward to ‘Whomas’ day on the 25th, ‘Doctor Who Confidential’ on at 1PM, ‘Jo Whiley meets Doctor Who’ on Radio 1 4 PM to 7 pm, followed by the TV event of the year – ‘The Runaway Bride’ on BBC 1.

Last week I treated myself to Series one (9th Doctor) on DVD, AND the second series boxed set 😀 So it’s been pretty much back to back episodes of the Doctor each evening at the moment.

Just bought the soundtrack album today too. Kept playing ‘Doomsday’ (the music used after the breach is sealed & during the goodbye on the beach). This would make a great single. 😎

And check out the advent calendar on http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/ Some great stuff on there.

Ashley – what did you think of John Borrowman on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross’ 😮

BTW the Hamster is on there this Friday (22nd) his first TV interview since the accident.

On the way in to London Victoria, the railway passes over a road with terraced houses down either side. Close to the line, there is a gap in the houses on either side of the road still occupied by a couple of prefabs. It’s not too hard to imagine a stick of bombs being aimed at the railway, and catching the houses as well.

Evidence, like this, of the blitz is still to be seen quite often.

‘Whats on TV’ have an electricaly heated bodywarmer in this weeks issue. I thought of East Kirkby as soon as I saw it.

It was certainly freezing last year, plenty of frost on ‘JJ’ when she did the second run. I actually had my coat on all the way home in the car, & when I got in I pulled my coat & shoes off & dived straight under the duvet.

If you can go then do so.

I went last year, courtesy of Robbo, and although it meant a 17 hour day I thoroughly enjoyed the day. The night run really takes you back to the airfield as ‘Just Jane’ & her crew taxy out for take off. I can see in my mind now, when ‘JJ’ turned at the end of the first half of the night run and sat for a little while, pitch darkness apart from a light in ‘JJ’s nose and the eight pairs of exhausts glowing blue.

The other exhibits are very interesting too.

I don’t know if I’ll get the chance to go again, but for me, my trip last year is right up there with a day at ‘Legends’.

Try Bromley Local Studies Library here http://www.bromley.gov.uk/libraries/librariesintheborough/local_studies_library.htm if your soon-to-be home is in that borough.

They may have records of bomb damage to property, either compiled after the war, or ARP/Civil Defence Record Books listing damage as it happened etc.

    Geoff,

This would be The Great Coup by Robert Hill and first published by Arlington Books in 1977. If you are still keen to obtain a copy, it should be available on abebooks.co.uk

I’ve just checked and there are 15 copies listed, from £27.60 for a first edition to 53p for a paperback.

Cheers Ian. Is the book any good, and accurate re events?

According to ‘War Prizes’ Junkers Ju 88R-1 WNr 360043 coded D5+EV of IV/NJG3 was flown from Kristiansand/Kjevik in Norway to RAF Dyce, & was later allocated the s/n PJ876. It made 83 flights totalling 66 hours 55 minutes whilst with the RAE.

I remember seeing a paperback book about this incident in a bookshop some 2o years ago. I’ve always regreted not buying it. Sadly I can’t recall the title or author.

    Is this the one?

    From ‘Last Take-off’

’15-Sep-52, VS598, Anson T22, RAFTC, South of RAF Debden, 1 killed.

This aircraft and the Anson below were part of a mixed formation with some Oxfords in a Battle of Britain flypast. On completion of the flypast, the Ansons left the Oxfords to overfly the airfield again in line-astern. However they collided and both crashed.

    Flight Lieutenant Kenneth William Jarvis’

The other Anson was VS603 also of the RAFTC, flown by Flight Lieutenant Peter Sherrif DFC AFC, aged 31 who also died.

Acording to Regnat’s book (see my post above) the ‘He111K’ was the designation given in the U.K. to the He111H series, until this was corrected in October 1943. In 1942 the ‘He111K’ was belived to be in service with the Japanese Army Air Force, but powered by two radial engines.

As an aside, in expectation that German aircraft, purchased or built in Japan, would be encountered various German aircraft were given Allied reporting names. The He111 was ‘Bess’, He112 – ‘Jerry’, Fw190 -‘Fred’, Fw200 – ‘Trudy, Ju52 – ‘Trixie’, Ju87 – ‘Irene’, Ju88 – ‘Janice’, Bf109 – ‘Mike’, & Bf110 – ‘Doc’.

The He111C & G were the airliner versions of the He111, whilst the He111 H-20 (which is the version displayed at the RAFM Hendon) could be used to carry 4 crew plus 16 soldiers & their equipment, 4 crew & 15 paratroops, or it could operate as a bomber. The He111H-23 was developed from the H-20 & was designed to carry 8 paratroops or 2 supply containers for commando operations, but it’s not clear from my source if this version was actually built.

Re the He111 variants I’d reccomend ‘Heinkel He 111’ by Karl-Heinz Regnat (Black Cross Vol 4) as a good source of technical information.

suggest Val puts in a least two more seasons on the Dyson before re-applying for flight duties.

Is it true the Dyson is to have new markings next year, & does it still have its original motor?

It now looks as though I’m going straight up to Cambridge on the Thursday afternoon and will stay there until Monday morning. Am I mistaken, or was there some muttering about some kind of bus service towards Dux from Cambridge on the Sat, and Sunday? I will apparently stay not so far from the railway station!

Look forward to see you all there!

TJ follow this link http://duxford.iwm.org.uk/server/show/nav.00d002002, & scroll down to the second last paragraph, click on the ‘Click here’ link & a pdf timetable for the bus will appear.
