Hi All,
Is ‘TE184’ the aircraft that was in the possession of the ‘Ulster Folk & Transport Museum’ many years ago?
Fassberg 1952, I was a driver on the refuelling flight where we used QLs and AEC Matadors to refuell the Vampires, “I don’t know the squadrons,” those QLs would only do 4 miles per gall and going round the peri track bends they would slowly heel over as gravity pushed the fuel past the baffles, they had a capacity of 500 galls if my memory is correct, the booms swung round guided with a rope, sometimes sparks would fly at the nozzle end due to static electricity though only noticed at night The pic of the Thornycroft also brought back recollections of the Coles crane I collected from Butzwielerhof and used at Bruggen, this one had a petrol engine, and I think a shorter wheel-base than the one illustrated. Thanks for the memory.
I was interested to hear you memories of Fassberg, your comment about static electricity caught my attention, I assume this did not happen during fuelling of the aircraft.

Eric
Nice pictures Wessex Fan, Thornycroft Amazons are rare beasties (I can only think of four still left), looks like yours is the long wheelbase version as well. As for the link XF382 posted, looks like the entirely blue one is the WW2 version.
If you go onto the IWM collections page http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk, go to the photographs section and type in ‘bowser’ some good (although small) photos come up of Bedford QL bowsers
The Amazon was gifted to us about a year ago, the only condition attached to the gift was that we did not use it for lifting things. Everything does work, although it helps to be Arnold Schwarzenegger when driving it!

Ollie,
The second instalment!
With the exception of the picture inside the hangar all the pictures were taken the week the Airacobra arrived at Duxford.

Like you I have seen nothing concrete regarding a 30D replacement, although I suspect in will be spring next year. However using the old crystal ball I suspect the 5D will still be a superior piece of kit!
Eric
Can’t stand the pointless silly squabbles and people trying to score points, the forums are a good source of info and advice ruined sometimes by the small minority.
Agree totally!

This is back to an argument aired at the very first meeting of the BAAC . If the MOD refuse permission on the attitude that ordnance is at the site, then they have a legal responsibility to make the site safe if it is in an area where people have to visit. They cannot have it every way.
Very true, but it’s the ‘Big Brother’ thing, the system says that the aircraft might have had ordinance on board, you must prove otherwise.
Many years ago a colleague told me of a hangar not far from my home which had been constructed on reclaimed land after World War 2, by all accounts a UXB lay undisturbed beneath it. The offending item was buried so deep, it was not regarded as a hazard!
The general rule is that ordinance will only be removed if:-
1> They know it is there.
2> In the opinion of the authorities it poses a specific and immediate risk.

The 5D is in theory at lease a much better camera; it should be it is more than double the price!
Amongst its many features it has a 12.8MP full frame CMOS sensor, the down side of that is ‘no magnification factor with the Zoom Lens.
Even if I had the spare cash I could not justify that sort of outlay.
Everybody seems to think that the 30D replacement is on its way, save your money and hold on for that, unless you must upgrade now!
Cheers
Eric
Thanks the guy also has a CANON EOS 300D same sort of price, with standard lens ?
Jamie if you really want a Canon and if finances allow go for the 350D, with it having been superseded by the 400D their should be some reasonable deals about. (The term reasonable is a bit elastic)
Like the 20D it is an 8MP camera, although the build quality is not as good, to be honest before you buy anything try to have a look at an example of your proposed purchase, see if the size and layout of the camera suits you.
See my earlier comments.
Hope the above helps.
Eric
