    Hi

Can someone tell me what the difference is between the 30D and the D30?? or are they the same….been offered a Canon D30 Digital SLR Camera & 28-105mm Zoom lens for £200 ish !

Canon EOS D30 3MP Digital SLR Camera of about 6 or 7 years ago, leave well alone.

Canon Eos 30D 8.3MP Semi/Pro Digital SLR Camera, may be replaced by a 10MP camera in the early part of next year.

    Hope the above helps.

    Cheers

    Shutter speed and other things!

This is all great advice, thanks to everyone for posting. It seems like one of the prosumer range would be within my budget, even though my old mum used to say “if you buy cheap you buy twice”…

    Anyway, two further questions-

How useful is image stabilization to getting good shots of aircraft in flight? Will this help in keeping the object in focus or will it end up spoiling any sense of speed? Also what is its effect on prop blur?

What about software for dealing with the results- are the programs that come with the bundle any good? I suppose there is no point buying at the top of my budget if I don’t have software that will do the results justice. But if the shots are good in the first place then they shouldn’t need any b*ggering about with, yes?

Image stabilization is not a must, but to be honest I would not buy a Zoom lense without it, it does help with the shaky hands but I think its most useful asset is in giving you an approximate ‘two stops’ benefit. It does in a sense help keep the aircraft in focus, however ultimately how well focused an aircraft is, is going to depend on the camera auto focus system if on one of the automatic settings. If the camera is on manual then it is down to skill and a little bit of luck.

Prop blur is simply down to shutter speed, the higher the speed setting the less blur, fast enought and you can defy the laws of the known universe and stop the aircraft, no prop blur no sign of forward motion. however remember that you will need to trade off shutter speed against aperture to get the depth of field you want for your next masterpiece.

As to image software that which is supplied with the camera will get you started, beyond that you cannot go far wrong with ‘Adobe Elements’.

The two ‘747’ pictures were taken with an Eos 20D, using a 75 – 300mm IS lens, as was the Ryan and Skyraider.

The aircraft formation is were dept of field can become really important see the attached taken at this years Legends.

    Happy picture taking!

    Cheers

as I understand it the permit is something of a formality mainly to protect undiscovered war graves,

    Stuart,

I have to disagree with the above statement, among other things the applicant must be able to prove that the target aircraft is safe to recover.

Some years ago we applied to do a recovery on a crashed Battle; the permit was refused on the basis that the available records stated that the aircraft had been on a War patrol. Those two words sank us without trace, the MOD took the line that the aircraft may have been fully armed and consequently the site may have contained unexploded bombs, we could not prove otherwise.

    The Kop

Bit of a stupid question maybe, but was that chanting by the Zulu warriors taken up by Liverpool FC fans as “Liv-er-pool, Liv-er-pool”? Just sounds so similar in rhythm, and doesn’t the Kop at Anfield take its name from Spion Kop in S.Africa? What was the connection there?

The Kop was named after the ‘Battle of Spion Kop’ which took place on the 24th January 1900, oddly enough the British lost.

Hello all,i’m after a new lens for my D50,i had my eye on this one:
    Nikon AF-S VR 4,5-5,6/70-300 IF-ED

Will this lens be an improvement on my current:
    Nikkor 70~300mm f/4~f/5.6G
I’m after nothing larger than 300mm as it would be just too heavy to bring around on my back when cycling. If anyone knows of other brand lenses in this range please tell me of them 😉

    Hi Gary,

I had a quick look at the specifcation for the lens in question and the short answer is yes, the optics will be better the image stablization will allow you another two stops to play with, no doubt others will come up with other advantages.

I had the same debate a few years with a canon lens, the one I purchased was well worth the money.

    Regards

It is a disgrace that an air ambulence service has to be funded in this way. In europe and Scotland they are all govt funded yet the ones in England / Wales get no help at all. (apart from the paramedic from NHS and at least one organisation went to court to get that) Not every county in England / Wales has one either – Hampshire and 1 other (not sure which) do not and so have to rely on other counties if one is needed.

Good to see the hamster is on the mend though.

Why should you be so surprised by the lack of funding, in a few years time the RAF Air / Sea Rescue service will have been farmed out to the private sector, all in the name of saving money!

I am waiting expectantly for the tax rebate we will all be getting from all this money the government keep saving.
